Here's the celebrated Tabacalera scene from Carmen, my favorite fight in movies. Laura del Sol is great, Cristina Hoyos is fantastic.

Don't mess with Carmen!

In Robin Davis' I Married a Shadow (1983) Nathalie Baye plays a pregnant woman who befriends a couple on a train.  The train crashes, the couple are killed and Baye awakens in hospital having given birth.   She is mistaken by the man's grieving parents as his surveying dead wife.  She goes along with charade.  If this story seems familiar it is because it has been done a few times now.   The original is a Cornell Woolrich story I Married a Dead Man which was first adapted by Mitchell Leisen in 1950 as No Man of Her Own with Barbara Stanwyck.

For the Benelux 1983 was an innovating year.

The 4th Man (De Vierde Man) is Paul Verhoeven's adaptation of a novel by Gerard Reve. It starts with a nightmarish scene in which Jeroen Krabbé sees a coffin with his name on it. Renée Soutendijk plays a fatal blonde who's somewhat comparable to Sharon Stone in that other Verhoeven movie Basic Instinct.

Brussels by Night was a rupture with the tradition of the farmer movie, because it was set in the dark environment of the capital at nighttime. A man strolls around aimlessly in cafés and through the streets, but he has something to hide. The final is set at the Ronquières Inclined Plane, a major construction to lift boats on a canal.

86016-the-snake-queen-s-wedding-0-230-0-

The Snake Queen and the Snake Queen's Wedding form part of a film series from Indonesia based on native folklore. A goddess wishing for a daughter creates an egg and hatching from it like a snake is a beautiful woman. In this second film, the snake queen makes men compete to win her affection. Not that great but a mildly interesting oddity nonetheless.

Aki Kaurismaki's Crime and Punishment (1983) is one of the better adaptations of the Dostoevsky novel.  And it happened to be his first dramatic feature.  There are a few significant changes.  It takes place in modern day Helsinki and the protagonist kills a man he has targeted instead of an female pawnbroker.  It has the Kaurismaki slant but not the humour.  Recommended.

Fanny Ardant and Jean-Louis Trintignant starred in Francois Truffaut's last film, Confidentially Yours (1983).  It's a comedic murder mystery that is said to be a tribute to Hitchcock.  I've seen it a few times.  The stars are good and it is quite enjoyable.

Vahsi Kan - Terrible Turkish "remake" (and I use that term loosely) of the First Blood films. In this film, the main character goes against mobsters who kidnap his family. The mobsters did so on the order of a former war buddy who holds a grudge against him. This doesn't really have a coherent plot or good acting or good effects. A funny oddity though.

Badi - Poorly made Turkish version of ET. Another remake trying to ape off the success of a popular American film. The alien "Badi" lands on Earth and causes problems for a family. The costume for Badi is very disturbing with a protruding chest (???) and weird lumpy, misshapen skin. This one is in purely so terrible it's funny territory.
