It must be fun typing "Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck" so many times. Makes you wish some of these directors' names were just "Bill Jones" or "Moe Smith".

There was a fun thread in general discussion a few years ago about strange names and DHVD's may have come up.

I know that I offered Friedrich von Ledebur who played Queequeg in Moby Dick (1956) and the Chief Dresden prison guard in Slaughterhouse Five (1972).  His real name was Graf Friedrich Anton Maria Hubertus Bonifacius von Ledebur-Wicheln.

The Awards of the Argentinian Academy or the Premios Sur are presented by the Argentinian Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences.  They began in 2006 but a previous incarnation of the Awards ran from 1941 through 1955 when it ended during the country’s political coup.  I have not been able to find those records.

A few words on some of my top choices:

triads_and_tongs1_5723.jpg

Triad Election is director Johnnie To's sequel to the previous year's Election. It centers on Simon Yam's newly elected triad crime boss and his efforts to retain his precarious position, as well as on Louis Koo's younger triad member who longs to retire from the life. Like the previous film, the focus is more on character than action scenes. Yam, who started out in some of Hong Kong's lousiest films, further illustrates what a first rate actor he became in middle age.

31exiled-600.jpg

Exiled is also from Johnnie To, and it also deals with the criminal underworld. It deals with rival pairs of triad enforcers, one duo assigned to assassinate a mob boss, the other two charged with protecting him. The quartet find themselves working together as their various illegal enterprises become entangled and more complicated. The movie is filled with veteran Hong Kong actors, with the stand-out being Anthony Wong as the oldest of the hitmen. He imbues his character with quiet dignity and gravitas.

dog-bite-dog-edison-chen.jpg

Dog Bite Dog is an especially brutal crime thriller/action flick from Hong Kong, centering on a Cambodian assassin (Edison Chen) clashing with a Hong Kong cop (Sam Lee). The plot is nothing new, but the execution under director Soi Cheang is taut, with graphic, painful fight scenes that are more interested in splintered bones and gushing blood than typical martial arts displays.

Wolfhound-2006-film-images-986ddca7-38be

Wolfhound is a high-fantasy action film about battling tribes of barbarians and druidic mysticism. This was one of the biggest-budgeted films ever made in Russia up to that time, and it shows, although there's still a slightly lunkheaded goofiness about the film that keeps it in B-movie territory. That may sound like an insult, but it's not, and I enjoyed the movie much more than I expected to.

game5.jpg

13: Game of Death is a Thai thriller about an average Joe named Phuchit (Krissada Sukosol Clapp) who gets a call on his cell-phone directing him to complete a series of tasks in exchange for a big money payout, all part of some game or contest. The financially-desperate Phuchit agrees, but as the tasks become increasingly difficult, illegal and immoral, he finds that if he tries to quit the consequences will be deadly. Like many Thai movies, the balance between farcical comedy and grim seriousness will seem off to many Western viewers, but I enjoyed the film, and an American remake is currently in pre-production.

Under the shadows of two better known Spanish movies, Pan's Labyrinth and Volver, azuloscurocasinegro (Dark Blue Almost Black) is an excellent Spanish drama directed by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, with good performances by **** Gutiérrez, Antonio de la Torre, Marta Etura, and Raúl Arévalo.

I saw Mezcal by chance, a look at the lives of people who think they have no future. A depressing but well made movie.

MV5BNDNkZjBkMzAtMmU3YS00Y2M2LWFhNzEtMjg0

I liked Cansada de Besar Sapos (Tired of Kissing Frogs), a romantic comedy from Mexico, directed by Jorge Colón, with Ana Serradilla, Ana Layevska (I still have a crush on her), and Juan Manuel Bernal.
