"Black Panther" won four awards at the annual MTV Movie and TV Awards, which was taped Saturday night at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. MTV televised the event on Monday.
In recent years, the onetime MTV Movie Awards has added television to the mix and also features genderless categories.
"Black Panther" won awards for Best Movie, Best Performance in a Movie (Chadwick Boseman), Best Hero (also Boseman), Best Villain (Michael B. Jordan) and
Boseman presented his Best Hero award to James Shaw, Jr., who has received international acclaim for his efforts in stopping a gunman during a deadly shooting in April at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee. Four people were killed in the attack. Shaw also created a GoFundMe page to assists the families of victims of the shooting.
"Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing. But it's even greater to acknowledge the heroes that we have in real life," Boseman said. "So this (Gold Popcorn trophy) is going to live at your house."
Season 2 of the Netflix drama series "Stranger Things" also picked up four awards: Best Show, Best Performance in a Show (Millie Bobbie Brown), Most Frightened Performance (Noah Schnapp) and Musical Moment.
The awards show was hosted by actress-comedian Tiffany Haddish, who earned Best Comedic Performance honors for her performance in "Girls Trip."
