The Cruel Paradox at the Heart of E. Jean Carroll’s Allegation Against Trump

The famous writer’s rape accusation against the president fell victim to the familiar workings of attention fatigue.

"......Over the weekend, the story’s outrages were largely extinguished, its claims consigned to that achingly familiar category of Trump-related news: shocking, but not surprising. “The allegation went largely undiscussed by major TV networks on Sunday morning,” HuffPost noted, “clearing the path for yet another sexual assault allegation against the president to slip into the void.”

The attrition of attention when it comes to Carroll’s story—“media fatigue,” CNN’s Reliable Sources put it—is in its own way shocking but not surprising.

It is yet more proof, as if any were necessary, of how commonly women’s stated experiences, particularly when the statements threaten the fragile order of things, are reflexively dismissed....

in Carroll’s case, a perverse kind of paradox has set in: The sheer number of women who have accused the president of misconduct seems to have helped diminish the impact of her accusation.

The notion of a president who is a sexual predator is profoundly familiar at this point, in part because Trump himself has been caught bragging on tape about the predation ........

Carroll’s essay is not merely an allegation against a president; it is also a meditation on numbers. It is an exploration of the banality of sexual violence, and of the chilling functions of addition and subtraction that operate in the background of so many people’s lives.

“Every woman,” Carroll writes, “whether consciously or not, has a catalogue of the hideous men she’s known.” .....

So there was an agenda behind the allegation,  that didn't get the desired attention.

Yeah, what could a woman gain from an accusation like this against the president? She only comes forward twenty years later too?

She does have a book coming out soon.    Don't know if she has decided to donate all profits to charity.

PS:  On the jazz guitar forum I'm discussing a topic called "what is jazz?";

That is a lot more complex issue to discuss than;  Is Trump a pig?.

(my point was that genre labeling is done for marketing purposes and thus the discuss is mostly hot-air,  so maybe there is more to mine with Trump afterall!).

If ONE white woman accused me of rape my career would be OVER.

A white man accused of rape by TWENTY TWO women being able to run for a 2nd term as POTUS,

with half the country still supporting him,

is all you need to know about racism, white male patriarchy and white supremacy.

An Epidemic of Disbelief

What new research reveals about sexual predators, and why police fail to catch them

".....

Each year, roughly 125,000 rapes are reported across the United States. Sometimes the decision to close a case is surely correct; no one wants to smear an innocent man’s reputation or curtail his freedom because of a false report.

But in 49 out of every 50 rape cases, the alleged assailant goes free—often, we now know, to assault again. Which means that rape—more than murder, more than robbery or assault—is by far the easiest violent crime to get away with. .......

Yet even as police and prosecutors seem stuck in time, our culture is moving forward. This moment feels fundamentally different from previous decades, when a sensational rape trial would trigger a surge of outrage and promises of reform, only to see the scandal ebb from consciousness.

Too many women have disclosed their #MeToo moments; too many rape kits have been pulled out of storage rooms. And if the success of the Cleveland task force proves anything, it is this:

Rape cases are winnable. Serial rapists could be swept from the streets and untold numbers of women could escape the worst moments of their life, if police and prosecutors would suspend their disbelief.

This type of bill (which CA passed a few years back),  is moving things in the wrong direction;  the best way to reduce sexual assaults and abuse is when the victim brings charges forward in a real-time a manner.

Therefore a bill that reduce retaliation (one of the reasons victims don't go to authorities),  would be going in a better direction then extending the time to report.

The New England Patriots have released Antonio Brown after just 1 game amid sexual assault allegations:

That's nothing, the Metropolitan Opera has been put on the spot concerning numerous sexual harassment allegations against famed opera singer Placido Domingo, Who is known as one of the legendary "Three Tenors".

They have not made a decision about his contract yet or if he will be appearing in a schedules upcoming "Macbeth".

The whole Met Opera season is hanging in the balance, as Domingo is a box office favorite in these financially stretched times for the Met.

Plus Domingo has been suspended from his position as general manager of the Los Angeles Opera pending an outside investigation.

Domingo Kicked out at the Met, but Welcomed by Putin at the Bolshoi

As late as Saturday, the Metropolitan Opera was telling its employees that Domingo would indeed be starring in Verdi's "Macbeth" on Wednesday. The MET Management felt that the accusations of sexual misconduct against the opera singer had not been corroborated since they only appeared in the AP and the accusers were all named as Anonymous in the article. Since then several women have come forward giving their names in NPR interviews.

NPR also interviewed employees who were at this Saturday meeting who related how disgruntled people were and how they felt that James Levine had been treated differently than Domingo since his accusers were men.

By Tuesday even the state senator who represents Lincoln Center was demanding that Domingo go.

In Domingo's statement he said he was leaving for the betterment of the Opera and in order not to be a negative center of attention. But after 51 years he would not be returning.

Also, Domingo has been put on suspension as general manager of the Los Angeles Opera, an Opera which he helped to found, pending an outside investigation.

Recently he has been blocked from working in the United States, although he has been active in Europe.

Despite the  American cancellation of his appearances, Russian president Vladimir Putin has welcomed him to star in a Bolshoi production of Verdi's " La Traviata " in April.

Louis C.K. is back on tour after admitting to sexual misconduct against several women

The fine print for tickets states that "recording of any kind, including note taking" is not permitted.
