Hello, I just joined backlot and I am interested in creating a chapter in st louis.  I  do not know anyone else that is interested in creating a chapter.  I understand to create a chapter you need five people.  Is that correct?

Yes.  Fill out the form at the bottom of this page, click submit, and you're on your way:  https://www.tcmbacklot.com/local-chapters

There is already one created:  https://www.tcmbacklot.com/local-chapters-list

I have seen several posts from the past year or so seeking people interested in starting a chapter in St Louis but nothing definitive as to the results or current status.  I am interested in either joining, if existing, or working to get one up and going here in St.Louis, MO.

Per the advice of TCM I am organizing a 2nd St. Louis Chapter, this one is more centrally located (St. Louis City and County and St. Charles as well as parts of Eastern Illinois). We will meet monthly at TCM events as well other film endeavors around the metro area. There already is a STL chapter and they are meeting in Fenton, but if you would like to be more local and help with another chapter send me a private message.

Here's what I've learned since February 5th, 2019:

The only way to create a Chapter is to fill out & submit the form at the bottom of this page:  https://www.tcmbacklot.com/local-chapters

At the top of that same page, TCM recommends you conduct your search for members here:

(TCM also recommends pages like the one we're on now for accumulating the 5 Backlot Member Quorum required to launch a Chapter, but *this* page existed FOR A WHOLE YEAR with no progress toward that goal.  Most "participants" never check back -OR- even open the private messages you send them.)

For the record, TCM/Fathom only offers their Big Screen Classics Series at NINE theaters in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.  Those theaters are in FOUR areas:  South County (Marcus Ronnie's Cinema, Regal Gravois Bluffs Stadium 12, Marcus Des Peres Cinema), Chesterfield (AMC Chesterfield 14, Marcus Chesterfield Cinema), St. Charles County (Marcus St. Charles Cinema, Regal O'Fallon Stadium 14), and Metro East (AMC Edwardsville 12, Marcus O'Fallon Cinema).

IMHO, none of those theaters are centrally located and not one is located in the City of St. Louis.  Personally, I would much rather see these great films at the Tivoli, Esquire, or Hi-Pointe Theaters, which are centrally located in the Metro Area.

And most of Fenton IS in St. Louis County.

According to Yacov Freedman, Senior Manager, TCM Backlot, himself a former St. Louisan, and per TCM rules, each Chapter must align itself with a specific theater & you MUST pick one that's on their list of 9 theaters.  Also per TCM rules, each Chapter must pick and stick to seeing the Big Screen Classics Series at a specific day & time, one of only 4 choices.  Here they are:

Sunday, 1PM
Sunday, 4PM
Wednesday, NOON
Wednesday, 7PM

It looks like we have enough people to start the chapter, assuming DmPcmTCM's other couple joins.  Does anyone know how to set up an actual chapter, or have any ideas where we would meet?

The only way to create a Chapter is to fill out & submit the form at the bottom of this page:  https://www.tcmbacklot.com/local-chapters

There would be one meeting facilitated each month by TCM via their Big Screen Classics Series.(https://www.tcmbacklot.com/upcoming-bschttps://www.fathomevents.com/series/tcm-big-screen-classics#close).  Each Chapter must align itself with one of 9 specific theaters in the Metro Area and then TCM provides FREE passes for each member of the Chapter.  https://www.tcmbacklot.com/local-chapters

Once everyone is connected, the sky's the limit.  In addition to the Big Screen Classics Series gatherings, you could meet wherever & whenever you agreed and could find the opportunity, including St. Louis City and County, St. Charles County, and Metro East.

Hello!

This is Jerry Durrwachter, President of the only St. Louis Backlot Chapter currently in existence, and I'd like to clear up a misconception.  Although this group currently meets monthly at a theater in Fenton, it is in the St. Louis County portion of that community, and we did not set out to meet there.  Once we gathered the minimum number of Backlot Members to form the Chapter (5), we looked at where those members lived, including one in Pevely, MO and another in Florissant, MO and picked the location most central to the existing membership.  Had there been theaters in the program more central to the over-all Metropolitan Area, like University City or Downtown St. Louis, we would have chosen to meet there.  We did the best we could with what was offered.  If the offerings change and our membership changes, we will change accordingly.

The other issue before us was whether to meet at the theater monthly on Sundays (1PM -or- 4PM) or Wednesdays (NOON -or- 7PM).  Well, there are 3 single dads in the group that Sundays are very important to, yet there is one member who is out-of-town with her job EVERY Wednesday and another member who goes to Church every Wednesday night.  All we could do was take a vote and that currently leads us to meeting at the theater every month on Wednesday @ 7PM.  Again, as the membership changes, we will change accordingly.

As membership grows, we will consider spinning off a St. Charles County group and a Metro East group and we will continue to address the Sunday/Wednesday issue. We will also seek opportunities to gather outside of the monthly Big Screen Classics meetings.  We will be open to those gatherings taking place EVERY day of the week and in EVERY community in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.

Again per TCM, I am starting a second totally different chapter. We need two more members. It was recommended by TCM that we select a different theatre than the Gravois one to avoid confusion. As Yacov from TCM pointed out t me, several cities have more than one sanctioned chapters. So this is a different chapter from the one that already exists. this one is focusing on the St. Louis Metro area and Eastern Illinois.

If you would like to join please send me an email. We have a calendar of events planned for through mid 2020 and some excited gettogethers as well!

Rob, you are more than welcome to start your own Chapter, but please let me try once again to attempt to clear the misconception:  Although the current St. Louis Chapter DOES meet monthly in a Fenton theater, that theater is in St. Louis County.  And I doubt seriously anyone in EASTERN Illinois will be joining either of our Chapters.

We currently have 23 members and they represent MANY communities in the Metropolitan St. Louis area including:

  1. Brighton, IL
  2. Swansea, IL
  3. Freeberg, IL
  4. St. Charles, MO
  5. St. Louis, MO (63116)
  6. St. Louis, MO (63109)
  7. St. Louis, MO (63129)
  8. St. Louis, MO (63146)
  9. High Ridge, MO
  10. Ballwin, MO
  11. Pevely, MO
  12. Florissant, MO
  13. Webster Groves, MO

We will also seek opportunities to gather outside of the monthly Big Screen Classics meetings.  We will be open to those gatherings taking place EVERY day of the week and in EVERY community in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.

I think you should definitely have two chapters. Sharks and Jets people.  Sharks and Jets.

I wish I could join, but there is no chance I'm close enough.  I'm almost an hour north of the person in Brighton, Illinois - but good for you Brighton.  I will definitely let you all know if there are any changes in my life, but as of right now meeting with folks on a Sunday, even one Sunday a month, would mean giving up my only day off to a LOT of driving.   I just don't think I have that level of commitment to our relationship. ;)  But damn I sure am glad you have this chapter (or chapters) up and running.  It is great to know you are all so near, but just out of reach.  :D

And if you all are voting I definitely vote that you find a way to make ONE chapter work.  There is no reason for two chapters.  Just find away to make it work.  So what if it is a little farther away than you want.  Do you know how far away I am from anywhere in STL and I'm still about 20% in?!
