TCM never shows any Universal or Fox films starring Lew Ayres (other than "All Quiet On The Western Front"). He starred in many films from those two studios in the 1930's. You would think that TCM could obtain at least a couple of those films for his special day.

Because they can rely on his MGM output. They also never show THE DARK MIRROR, a classic Universal noir he did with Olivia de Havilland.

I definitely agree that they should have pulled in a Lew Ayres film rarely seen or never seen on TCM. Personally, when I saw he was going to be one of the actors during SUTS, I was hopeful that an old Universal film would be shown. Alas, I should have know better.

Anyway, on a happier note, at least it seems like a pretty nice lineup this year, despite the fact that there are a few usual suspects. :)

There will always be some "usual suspects" since TCM likes to promote the household names. But they've added in other ones who are not often recognized, like Ayres, so it's not terrible. The main idea is to have some variety in the schedule, which I think they've accomplished this year. Don't you agree?

Oh, yes, I definitely agree with you! I'm particularly excited to see Agnes Moorehead and Audrey Totter on the schedule, along with Lew Ayres. I'll have a lot to record this August!

Who are you excited about? :)

Also in the case of Ayres, there will be new viewers who have never seen a Dr. Kildare movie before. This will cause them to look for other Kildare titles on TCM's schedule in the future. So in a way this is how a fanbase is built.

I am most excited about the Dorothy Malone day since I feel it was long deserved. Plus it's nice that George Brent is getting his first day in August though he was previously a Star of the Month (a long time ago). And I'm glad they are featuring Marcello Mastroianni at the end of August.

I share your admiration for Agnes Moorehead and Audrey Totter.

I'm sure Lew Ayres will have many new fans. Like Ginger Rogers said, the first time I saw him, I fell in love with him. He has such a cute and alluring boyish charm. And such talent too!

Ooh, yes, George Brent is another star I am so happy to see!

Sorry for double posting, but I was just thinking that it would be cool if TCM could blend the days of the SUTS. For instance, I was looking at Agnes Moorehead's day, and saw that they put Johnny Belinda second to her last movie of the day. Now, if they put that one as her last movie, it could also double as Lew Ayres' first movie. Hopefully this makes sense! :)

(I saw something similar to this idea somewhere else in the schedule, but I can't remember where. :p)

They might have done something like that once during 31 Days of Oscar a few years ago. It's a good idea. Makes things a bit more fun.

What I would give to be a scheduler! Hehe. Too bad there isn't someone who actually works for TCM that would post in some of these topics. Then we could talk to the person behind all these movies. :)

Eddie Muller does read posts at the Noir Alley thread and others related to noir and has made comments,  but yea,  it would be great if Ben was on here and \ or had his own thread (but I would also be concerned if user would treat Ben fairly and in a friendly manner).

But yea,  a TCM programmer thread would also be nice (but again,  only if there are few to no mean spirited type posts).

PS: love your avatar;   Jean is one of my favorites!

True. Some people just never have anything nice to say and then that ruins of for the rest of us. Who knows, maybe Ben does read our posts. :)

Thanks! I agree, Jean is such a great actress. She is one of my favorites too! I always have my eye out for one of her movies. Hmm... Maybe she'll be SOTM soon. I think it's been a while for her. *)
