Guy Maddin

Any fans of this Canadian director? I've just gotten into him, lately.

His movies have a wonderfully surreal dream-like quality to them. And many of them are hommeges to the silent film, which I also love.

I saw *The Saddest Music in the World* at a screening about 3 years ago where Maddin discussed that film and his life as a director. Enjoyed it immensely and want to see more, but... Have you seen My Winnipeg? Do you have any recommendations?

Haven't seen MY WINNIPEG, yet. But I just bought COWARDS BEND THE KNEE. It's a silent black and white autobiographical film. It's in the form of 10 short films. Very surreal, and very cool.

*Brand Upon the Brain!* is definitely an interesting movie, I guess it's kinda hard to describe to someone who hasn't seen it. But it definitely manages to achieve a kind of dreamlike quality, with some vivid and/or disturbing imagery.

It's great that the Criterion DVD comes with 8 different narrations to choose from; I just went with the default Isabella Rossellini narration.

Have any of you seen Tales From the Gimli Hospital? It's been a few years since I first saw it, but I remember being rather taken with the imagery.
