Hi Joe! these are fantastic pictures, thanks so much for all the work you put into this forum.

Isn't that famed cinematographer James Wong Howe bending down beside John Garfield? Sometimes the backgrounds of your pictures yield some real treasures!

Thanks Joe!

Nancy

Thank you, Nancy.

That is indeed the great James Wong Howe. Thanks for pointing that out.

By the way, the image with Susan Hayward at the awards show has Ginger Rogers

sitting directly behind her and Ingrid Bergman at the end of her table.

I thought that was Ginger Rogers!. The picture of Hedy Lamarr on the beach with her children doesn't look anything like her (at least to these old eyes), and I've noticed several others that are "off" to me, so I didn't want to say "Ginger!". There's one or two that are of Lana Turner, and I'd swear they were of her stand-in.

Keep them coming, Joe!

Mongo - once again, thanks for creating this great thread.

CK - re: the photo of "John Sutton" below - I am not familiar with him, but if that is his photo, he is an identical twin of Tyrone Power.

glorious photos....I thought Talulah Bankhead was Bette Davis in that photo with Rock Hudson. Janet Leigh and Vivien Leigh look beautiful and Valentino looks like he stuffed a potato in front of his bathing suit....ewww..

With Joe's blessing, I'll be posting some candid photos of Fred Astaire. Here are a couple more of him sans toupee, just to show that he didn't always look as awkward as in that one earlier photo.

First, one of him and Ginger in the early 1940s:

1940s G and F

Next, one of him with his wife, Phyllis, taken about 1939. Some columnist published this beside a photo of him with the toupee, remarking, "Here are two views of Mr. Astaire: One of him with his wig and not his wife, and one of him with his wife and not his wig."

Poor Fred--he started balding at about age 27! But like Crosby, he was not as careful in public as Frank and Gene and a number of others who also wore a hairpiece.
