Movie Poster Libel

92 posts in this topic

I watched Shadow Of The Thin Man again this morning, and was once again disgusted by the way the illustrator portrayed the beautiful Myrna Loy on the film's main poster. Maybe it's just me, but she looks terrible on this poster.

What are some other examples of movie posters that do their stars no favors?

The offending poster:

Poor John Garfield.

Yeah, I agree speedy.

(...his lipstick shade choice doesn't complement his skin tone at all, does it)

Oh, and btw Spritz Nipper. I hate to tell you this, but I don't think the image of your gal Myrna you've been using as your avatar is all that becoming of her, either.

Don't ya think it kind'a makes her look a little chubby-cheeked?

Now, HERE'S the one I'd use of her if I were you...

Nor the blush. What's with the double chin?

Oh now, I'll have to disagree with you about the choice of John's blush color, Dearie.

(...I think it's just FABULOUS!)

I got it from this Lobby Card:

too-hot-to-handle-lg.jpg

I don't think it's a bad picture, except that it looks like the sun is in her eyes. I might find a better picture at some point, but I don't want to use one that is too common, like the one you suggested (though it is possibly the best picture there is, minus the colorization).

Ah! Ya know I was wonderin' why she was sportin' those headphones in your avatar.

The poster for the 1983 teen sex comedy-drama Class (where Jraqueline Bisset and  Andrew McCarthy drifted into a relationship) was downright embarassing

I assume this is the poster that you're referring to.

Okay, on the flip-side of BAD movie posters that do nothing in flattering the lead actress in a movie, I now bring you(somewhat tongue-in-cheek) one that does a GREAT job in making her look even BETTER!

Now, here (supposedly) is actress Claudia Barrett in...

robot-monster-poster.jpg

...and HERE she is in shot from that flick...

giphy.gif

(...she sure looks a lot better in the poster, now wouldn't ya agree?!)

;)

She at least had the potential to look that good:

Ok really, is that a robot or some sadist moon alien stuck a gorilla's head into a vat of sulfuric acid.

It looks like they illustrated one generic person, duplicated it, put long hair on one, short hair on the other, and called them Eleanor Parker and John Garfield.  John Garfield looks like Charlie McCarthy!

Actually speedy, I have to say here I think that DOES look quite a bit like Garfield(with a bad makeup job, of course), however I WILL agree with you that what's supposed to be Parker in that poster looks a bit less like her.

Okay, and now after revisiting this washed-out pastel colored movie poster of...

...yeah, have to say I do think that looks a bit like Eleanor too.

(...now Dane Clark here on the other hand...) ;)

I found this lobby card in the bin at Larry Edmonds several years ago.  I bought, and hung it, since I've always been fond of the film.  However, when I look at it on the wall of my guest room, I am drawn to how unattractive Lana's legs and feet appear, especially since her legs were one of her best features.  Is it just me?  The Acapulco setting would explain their deep tan, but somehow they look so unnatural.
