Trump & the Saudis?

The Trump Administration Is Declaring a Fake Emergency to Sell Weapons to Saudi Arabia

"The Trump administration chose the Friday afternoon before Memorial Day weekend to invoke an obscure state-of-emergency provision that would allow it to sell billions of dollars in weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates without giving Congress a chance to block the sale.

A Democratic congressional source told The Intercept on Friday that the administration was using the measure to clear a backlog of more than 20 proposed arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, many of which would be blocked if they came to a vote in the Senate.........

Under the rarely used provision, however, the president can certify that “an emergency exists” and that an immediate transfer is necessary for “the national security interests of the United States.”

In a statement on Friday, Sen. Bob Menedez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that in notifying Congress of its plans, the Trump administration had “described years of malign Iranian behavior

but failed to identify what actually constitutes an emergency today.”.......

Sen. Chris Murphy, who warned days ago that the Trump administration would try to circumvent Congress, said that President Donald Trump is only using the loophole because he knows he cannot sell weapons to Saudi Arabia any other way.

“There is no new ‘emergency’ reason to sell bombs to the Saudis to drop in Yemen, and doing so only perpetuates the humanitarian crisis there,” Murphy said in a statement Friday.......

Credit: Kevin Dietsch / Pool via CNP - NO WIRE SERVICE ' Photo by: Kevin Dietsch/picture-alliance/dpa/AP ImagesThe above image from the Intercept article does not actually show "bombs."  Of course, that could very well be a subterfuge on the part of Trump.  It does show aircraft and ship launched missiles, which I guess could be used in Yemen, especially the aircraft ones.  The other items appear to typical big bucks for US defense industries.  Which of course creates jobs and spending in many, many Congressional districts and states.

There is not doubt that what Trump is doing is wrong as there is no threat to Saudi Arabia or US personnel/facilities in S.A.  Wonder if Congress or House can appeal to Supreme Court to stop it?

We presented some of these sales almost 18 months ago to Congress, but it has failed to act. The U.S. is, and must remain, a reliable security partner in the Gulf and to our allies around the world.

Hey @SecPompeo, stop lying. Congress can't act on arms sales until you formally notice the sales.
You didn't do that until Friday

and then you made up emergency stuff to avoid congressional review.

Why are you acting like a lapdog for the Saudis?

.@realDonaldTrump wants to keep selling American weapons to his Saudi buddies.

But he knows Congress won't approve selling to a regime that's bombed thousands of Yemeni civilians and murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi

– so he's trying to go around us.

Senators will try to block Trump’s arms sales to Saudi Arabia

"A bipartisan group of senators will try to block the Trump administration’s use of emergency authority to sell arms to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, setting up a possible showdown with the White House.

The resolutions of disapproval come after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Congress the administration would move forward with billions of dollars in arms sales using an emergency provision in the Arms Export Control Act.

The resolutions are the latest example of tension between senators and the White House over what role Congress should play in U.S. foreign policy decisions.

Senators from both parties have attempted to punish Saudi Arabia over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last year. The CIA believes Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman directed Khashoggi’s killing.....

Lindsey Graham, in a statement, assailed the decision and said that the behavior of the crown prince “cannot be ignored.”

“Now is not the time to do business as usual with Saudi Arabia,” Graham said in a statement. “I am also very concerned about the precedent these arms sales would set by having the administration go around legitimate concerns of the Congress.......".................

Personally I agree with this, BUT it will mean jobs and/or money lost in many Congressional districts and states.  Will be hard to get 51 (or more) senators and majority of House members to vote for it and then Trump will veto it.

Well past time for Congress to stand up and pass laws restricting executive authority in this, tariffs and many other areas.

Congress should pass such laws but they shouldn't apply until the start of the next Presidential term (or even the one after that).

This way such bills would be less partisan (I.e. more likely to gain support in Congress from both parties) and a President would be more likely to sign such a bill (since the bill wouldn't apply to them while they are in office).

Of course maybe a President would never sign a bill that would reduce the power of the office.    E.g. I wonder if Obama would have done so.

The production arrangement is part of an $8.1B arms package for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Jordan.

The Trump admin. pressed ahead with the sale without congressional approval,

declaring an "emergency" based on what it said was a heightened threat from Iran

Predictably, the Saudis and Emiratis used the very threat they've been unreasonably hyping

to get the U.S. arms they couldn't have gotten by any other means.

That this is all so transparent only underscores that Trump and his crew feel enormous contempt for the average American.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blocked the inclusion of Saudi Arabia on a U.S. list of countries that recruit child soldiers, dismissing his experts’ findings that a Saudi-led coalition has been using under-age fighters in Yemen’s civil war, .....

...“Is there no limit to what the Trump Admin is willing to do to cover for #SaudiArabia’s human rights abuses and violations of international norms?”

Sarah Margon, director of Human Right Watch’s Washington office, said: “This decision shows clearly that the Trump administration is using political manipulation and dismissing evidence – at the expense of kids – in order to protect Saudi Arabia.”....

What it really takes is a Republican (hopefully many) who will say this.  Sanders just blathers on with no real influence in Congress.

Read about this is this morning's paper.  It's a start, but still will need enough House and Senate members to over ride the Trump veto that is coming. (7 GOPers in Senate is not many).

Another report showing why Graham opposed it.  However, all 7 GOP senators know that Trump will veto it and they will not override his veto and the sales will go through.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/20/us/politics/saudi-arms-sales.html

Congress still needs to assert its authority with a veto proof law to prevent the president from authorizing arms sales to foreign nations without Congressional approval first.

Chuck Todd asks Trump about holding Saudi Arabia accountable for Jamal Khashoggi's murder, and Trump responds by citing Saudi's billions of $$'s in business with the U.S.

David Sanger @SangerNYT

This is a remarkable answer.

The President never mentions Khashoggi’s name, condemns his murder or even offers assurances, as US did seven months ago, that those responsible will be held accountable.

Instead he turns to the busine$$ implications of a breach with KSA.

Saudi Dictatorship Erecting Statue of Liberty is Perfect Symbol of Trump-MBS Bromance

".... You couldn't think of many countries more incongruous with the word "freedom" than Saudi Arabia, but there she is—Lady Liberty herself, lifting her torch high above the kingdom's port city of Jeddah. Only in the Trump era could such a potent symbol of freedom as the Statue of Liberty be hijacked by a dictatorship like Saudi Arabia.

....Despite the most heinous of crimes, Saudi Arabia was still a "great ally" and a great supporter of America, he would say.

As long as lucrative arms deals are providing jobs back home, the bromance will continue with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, of whom a UN report last month said there was 'credible evidence' he was involved in the killing of the Washington Post journalist, Khashoggi.

It's not surprising that the Saudis carry on regardless.

However, if you accept that the Statue of Liberty represents the very best of America and her place in the world, then by extension you have to also accept that Donald Trump is an "un-American" President.

Lady Liberty and he just do not share the same values.......

So, for now, we're treated to the grotesque spectacle of the Statue of Liberty being wheeled out on the Jeddah Corniche as part of some tacky display of Americana,

along with a Hollywood sign, a Welcome to Vegas sticker, an Uncle Sam hat and an Elvis Presley statue—all set to the Bruno Mars song, Uptown Funk. ........

Trump aide submitted drafts of 2016 'America First' energy speech to UAE for edits, emails show

“The Trump Administration has virtually obliterated the lines normally separating government policy making from corporate and foreign interests,” according to a report overseen by House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, who commissioned the investigation into back channel business dealings between certain Trump aides and Middle Eastern countries. ........

This is an Anti-Corruption post, against both the Saudi Government and our own.  That we are possibly implicated in some way in Khadhoggi’s death and dismemberment, and not holding his killer(s) accountable, is absolutely reprehensible. That all of this was possibly done to line the pockets of Trump and Kushner is probably a criminal act.
