Marine combat veteran kills 12 in California bar shooting

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Using a smoke bomb and a handgun, a hooded Marine combat veteran dressed all in black opened fire during college night at a country music bar in Southern California, killing 12 people and sending hundreds fleeing in panic before apparently taking his own life, authorities said Thursday.

Authorities said the motive for the attack Wednesday night was under investigation.

The killer was identified as 28-year-old Ian David Long, a former machine gunner and veteran of the war in Afghanistan who was interviewed by police at his home last spring after an episode of agitated behavior that they were told might be post-traumatic stress disorder.

Screaming in fear, patrons rushed for the exits, ducked under tables and hurled barstools to smash second-floor windows and jump to safety as gunfire erupted at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a hangout popular with students from nearby California Lutheran University.

"I dropped to the floor," Sarah Rose DeSon told ABC's "Good Morning America." ''A friend yelled, 'Everybody down!' We were hiding behind tables trying to keep ourselves covered."

The dead included 11 people inside the bar and a veteran sheriff's sergeant who was the first officer inside the door, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

"It's a horrific scene in there," Dean said in the parking lot. "There's blood everywhere."

Anxious family members gathered at a teen center in town to await word on the fate of loved ones who had gone to the club. Jason Coffman received confirmation that his son Cody, 22, who was about to join the Army, was dead. Coffman broke down as he told reporters how his last words to his son were not to drink and drive and that he loved him.

Long was in the Marines from 2008 to 2013, rose to the rank of corporal and served in Afghanistan in 2010-11, the military said.

The foreign policy of Bush and Obama must have driven this guy mad, and this time it was done with a handgun.

It's the ready existence of guns in America that is to blame for these constant tragedies. What's that now? Two in two weeks?

Canada has had a couple of mass murders but they remain rare occurrences in a nation that does not have a culture that regards a gun as a right and a part of its heritage.

Many American politicians, as always, are gutless at standing up to the NRA lobby. Look at your current blowhard President, a year ago referring to other politicians being afraid of that organization. Now all he does is parrot them by saying a good guy with a gun nearby would have made the difference.

What happened to that talk about banning bump stocks? Maybe Trump would be more concerned about it if these mass murderers were not Caucasian, which usually seems be the case.

Lord protect us from Trump's fury if it is ever a brown skinned immigrant behind one of these tragedies. But even then he won't crack down on gun laws, just immigrants.

Once again, some of the people at the new mass shooting had almost been killed in an earlier mass shooting as well: https://slate.trib.al/1jWmLf9

This is an unbelievable story about how a number of these survivors of the latest mass shooting are also survivors of previous mass shootings, such as the massacre in Las Vegas.

Unfortunately it looks as though this kind of experience is becoming all too common to American people for more than one time in their life.

What I've heard he only used a handgun.  If even there was a limit / ban on assault rifles, it wouldn't have made a difference in this case.

The Thousand Oaks shooter used a high capacity magazine that California voters banned anyone in the state from possessing in 2016.

But the NRA and other gun advocates blocked the law from being implemented with a lawsuit.

That woman is completely braindead and has been for some time.  She is also a big big Trump* supporter.  It is very sad that so many people voted for her.

I don't understand....

Why wasn't this veteran, who obviously showed some behavioral "red flags" a few weeks or so earlier, given the treatment he so too obviously needed to prevent this from happening?

Just WHO is in charge of  seeing that returning combat veterans get the medical treatment they require anyway?

And too....WHERE were all the 2nd amendment revisionist "open-carry" policy enthusiast gun owners that were supposed to make things so SAFE for us?

Gee. How time flies. This is regular as a metronome. Another three months in USA must have transpired. Another three months without a single corrective, progressive, forward-looking, preventative-action being taken. This is more reliable than daylight-savings. I could use these bloodbaths to set my watch for another meaningless media- debate three months from now.

This month however, its time for another week of rehashing the same old insoluble issues as the last seven, eight, or nine times such slaughter occurred. Another round of the same old hand-wringing and crocodile-tears to be shed by our graft-dipping politicos while we merely roll over in our sleep.

We are to blame for this situation, not them. Politicians turn to special-interests to win elections rather than rely on  our meager, 50% voter turnout. No pol is going to turn away money from the pro gun-lobby when we citizens obviously don't give a damn.

In California, gun control fails once again

Once again, we see the failure of gun control in preventing a horrible tragedy.

Wednesday's California bar shooting was in a gun-free zone, where good guys cannot legally carry firearms.

Gun-free zones are magnets for killers. Consider that almost 98 percent of public mass shootings in this country occur in these mandatory victim zones.

But where citizens can protect themselves, the situation is much different. Within the past month, two potential mass shootings were averted by law-abiding citizens who used their concealed firearms.

But the anti-gun left fails to mention how these two citizens saved lives in those incidents. Why is that?

We will never rid ourselves of one basic problem: Bad guys with evil intent will always acquire some kind of “weapon” to commit violence.

Our view: Thousand Oaks shooting shows America's inaction on gun violence puts cops in the firing line

This includes using a truck to kill eight and injure 11 in New York last year or wielding box cutters or knives to murder roughly 3,000 on 9/11.

*********************************************

California can pass all the guns laws, and it has. Yet we have another shooting in a gun-free zone.

For some reason MM did not deem it necessary to include the name of the author of this opinion piece:

Erich Pratt is the executive director of Gun Owners of America, a national gun rights organization.

Ian David Long, 28, cleared a mental-health check by police months before he opened fire on a Thousand Oaks bar packed with college students, killing 12 people

He must be like Animal Mother in "Full Metal Jacket" (1987).

Private Eightball.... Now you might not believe it, but under fire Animal Mother is one of the... finest human beings in the world. All he needs is somebody to throw hand grenades at him the rest of his life.
