Osasio-Cortez is a proud member of: The Democratic Socialists of America a left-wing organization of democratic socialist, social democratic and labor-oriented members in the United States.

She wasn't forced to join this group.

I agree with you, James but Mr. 6s does raise a point that much of what these so called "Socialists" want is just basic Social Democracy from 50 years ago and not actual Socialism.

I'm a Democratic Socialist - been one since the sixties.

But I'm not a Communist.

Very different beings.

A lot of people seem not to know the difference.

I agree also,  but the group should have used a different term;  e.g. new-deal Dems.

It isn't just Fox and far-right talking heads that are distorting their POV and how 'socialist' and 'socialism' are framed.

Democrats, Says Ocasio-Cortez, Have Compromised Away "Too Much of Who We're Supposed to Be"

"It's just about what we choose to compromise," says New York congresswoman

..........Agreeing with a posit by Cooper that the Democratic Party has already "lost too much" by compromising with the GOP on certain things, she explained: "I think we've compromised things that we shouldn't have compromised, whether it's judgeships with Mitch McConnell, whether it's compromising on climate change. I think we've — there are some things that we've compromised a little bit too much on. But am I open to compromise on certain ways to get things done? Absolutely."

A case in point, earlier on Sunday—and amid an ongoing standoff over a federal funding and President Trump's demand for $5.6 billion for his border wall—Ocasio-Cortez characterized Trump's shutdown tactics as "hostage-taking," in which the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of federal workers and their families were under threat by the president. "No one," she said, "can compromise or negotiate with that."......

And this is why AOC isn't good for the Dem party.    E.g. did Pelosi ever comment on her 70% top Fed tax rate?

I don't recall her doing so.

Silents speaks loudly.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticises lack of diversity among CBS journalists covering 2020 election

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hit out at CBS News for an apparent lack of black journalists covering the 2020 US presidential election.

The newly sworn in congresswoman responded to a tweet from CBS producer Ben Mitchell which announced the team covering the upcoming election and published their headshots.

The Democrat, who represents New York's 14th congressional district, said: “This WH admin has made having a functional understanding of race in America one of the most important core competencies for a political journalist to have.

"Yet CBS News hasn’t assigned a *single* black journalist to cover the 2020 election.”

The rising political star, a self-avowed socialist from the South Bronx, added: “Unacceptable in 2019. Try again.”

The Twitter post, which has been shared over 4,500 times, faced some criticism from other reporters over the comments. This included Josh Kraushaar, politics editor at the National Journal, who said she had “another thing” in common with US president Donald Trump: “media scold.”

************************************************

The fake news gets busted by a Democrat.

Something @AOC is rarely credited on: she's one of the first members of Congress since Robert F. Kennedy to make issues like tax policy accessible to voters by using humor and clear examples to explain hazy ideas like marginal tax rates.

Ocasio-Cortez Forced to Explain Marginal Tax Rates to 'Far-Right Former Governor' Scott Walker

"Imagine if you did chores for abuela & she gave you $10. When you got home, you got to keep it, because it's only $10.... Then we taxed the billionaire in town because he's making tons of money underpaying the townspeople."

https://www.businessinsider.com.au/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-wall-street-should-love-mmt-2019-1

Wall Street should love the economic theory Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez backs — and that should worry the rest of us

  • The Democratic Party’s rising star, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is a champion of modern monetary theory (MMT), which holds that federal deficits aren’t as bad as we’ve always believed.
  • Naturally, conservatives are freaking out about what this would do to public-sector balance sheets.
  • But the real issue is what Wall Street and corporate America would do under MMT – and that’s borrow money to buy back shares and boost CEO paydays.
  • It seems the entire conservative universe is freaking out about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York). They have come up with a lot of reasons for it, but chief among them are her ideas about the economy.

In an interview with Business Insider, Ocasio-Cortez said modern monetary theory (MMT) should “absolutely” be a part of our conversation about the economy. It’s a theory that holds that deficit spending isn’t nearly as toxic as we’ve come to believe over the last 40 years – and that it’s, in fact, a useful tool. To manage it, you keep interest rates low, and when the economy runs too hot, you raise taxes.

That sound you’re hearing is 1,000 deficit hawks weeping.

  •

You’ll find a lot of those people on Wall Street. At the beginning of the financial crisis, they warned a combination of deficit spending on bailouts and the expansion of the Fed’s balance sheet would surely lead to rampant inflation (it didn’t). These are also often the people you’ll hear at country clubs and steakhouses talking about fiscal responsibility and the virtue of balancing the federal budget.

The reality is, though, that they should love MMT. It’s easy money. And they have actually been living in a shade of it for the last decade – a time when the S&P 500 rose year after year as surely as the sun would shine.

  •

This is Wall Street, this is Wall Street on easy money

MMT is not really that insane.

It’s first precept is one widely held as an economy truth – the countries that create their own currency will never go bust. That means deficits aren’t nearly as bad as we’ve thought they are since the ’80s, and it means we don’t have to raise taxes to increase spending.

To get away with this, you’ll need to keep interest rates low. As Josh Barro over at New York Magazine said, one of MMT’s founders thinks rates should be kept permanently at zero.

  •

What MMT adherents do accept is that the running deficits can lead to inflation. When that happens, the government will raise taxes to cool the economy. That, MMT adherents say, is the purpose of taxes – controlling inflation, not raising revenue. In our system, it’s the opposite. The Fed controls inflation with interest rates, and the government raises revenue.

It isn’t the public sector we need to worry about the most in this framework, it’s the private sector. For the Wall Street I’ve covered for the past 8 years, MMT looks like a heady brew of easy money, major paydays for CEOs, and a chance to let K Street show its worth.

Replying to @AOC

When you pay willingly pay 70% marginal tax rate and provide proof, I'll think about it. Live up to your words. I dare you.

The odds of me making over $10 million in one year while serving in public office are probably as slim as the odds of the GOP ever understanding what a marginal tax rate is.

But if it ever got to that, I’d be happy to contribute more for our bridges, teachers, and firefighters.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Crusher of Sacred Cows

With its silly swipes at AOC, the American political establishment is once again revealing its blindness to its own unpopularity

".....We’ve seen this a lot in recent weeks with the ongoing freakout over newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Lest anyone think any of the above applies to “AOC,” who’s also had a lot to say since arriving in Washington, remember: she won in spite of the party and big donors, not because of them.

That doesn’t make anything she says inherently more or less correct. But it changes the dynamic a bit. All of AOC’s supporters sent her to Washington precisely to make noise. There isn’t a cabal of key donors standing behind her, cringing every time she talks about the Pentagon budget.

She is there to be a pain in the ****, and it’s working. Virtually the entire spectrum of Washington officialdom has responded to her with horror and anguish...........

High priest of conventional wisdom Chris Cillizza, with breathtaking predictability, penned a column comparing her to Donald Trump. He noted the social media profiles of both allow them to “end-run the so-called ‘media filter’ and deliver their preferred message… directly to supporters.”

The latter issue, of course, is the real problem most of Washington has with “AOC”: her self-generated popularity and large social media presence means she doesn’t need to ask anyone’s permission to say anything.....

T hey all think the pronouncements of their own party leaders, and donors, and high-profile commentators at the Times and the Post or CNN, have extraordinary importance. They think this for the obvious reason that most of them owe their political careers to such people. .....

I have no idea if Ocasio-Cortez will or will not end up being a great politician. But it’s abundantly clear that her mere presence is unmasking many, if not most, of the worst and most tired Shibboleths of the capital.

Moreover, she’s laying bare the long-concealed fact that many of their core policies are wildly unpopular, and would be overturned in a heartbeat if we could somehow put them all to direct national referendum.....

with these swipes on Ocasio-Cortez, the people defending those ideas don’t realize how powerful a stimulant for change is their own negative attention. If they were smart, they’d ignore her.

Then again, if politicians were smart, they’d also already be representing people, not donors. And they wouldn’t have this problem."
