Is Criticizing Israel Anti-Semitic.?

73 posts in this topic

Criticizing Israel Isn’t Anti-Semitic. Here’s What Is.

"...........Ilhan Omar has criticized the U.S. government’s support for Israeli actions that break international law. And she’s spoken out against the role money in politics plays in shoring up that support.

Neither is anti-semitic.

What is anti-semitic is the cacophony of mainstream media and politicians saying that criticizing U.S. policy toward the state of Israel is the same as attacking Jewish people.....

The modern state of Israel was established by Zionists — a nationalist movement started by European Jews with the aim of creating a “Jewish state” as a refuge for persecuted Jews.

It’s true that Jews have faced centuries of brutal persecution in Europe. But the Zionists’ project shared unmistakably European colonialist roots.

In 1948, Israel’s war of independence led to the Nakba, an invasion driving 700,000 Palestinians from their homes. These Palestinians were never allowed to return, creating a massive refugee population that today numbers over 7 million.....

What it did create is an imperialist stronghold that continues to break international law by building settlements deeper and deeper into Palestinian territory, giving Jewish Israelis superior legal status to Arab Israelis and Palestinians, and attacking all who protest.

Since Israel’s origin, the U.S. has supplied tens of billions of dollars of military aid and ardent political support. Congress consistently ignores dozens of UN resolutions condemning Israeli abuses, and year after year gives it more resources to violently oppress impoverished Palestinians.

Pro-Israel lobbying groups’ considerable political influence has even pushed Congress to consider bills punishing Americans who support Palestinian rights. (Around half of all states already have such laws.).....

More broadly, they rely on villainizing critics with false claims of antisemitism — especially when the criticism comes from a person of color, as we’ve seen with Angela Davis, Marc Lamont Hill, and Michelle Alexander before Rep. Omar.

........increasing number of young American Jews, want to discuss U.S. support of Israel. Talking foreign policy is not anti-semitism.

What is anti-semitic — always — is saying that all Jews support violence and imperialism."

lhan Omar’s Criticism Raises the Question:

Is Aipac Too Powerful?

".......“If one dares to criticize Israel or dares to criticize Aipac, one gets branded anti-Semitic,” Mr. Baird added, “and that’s a danger to a democratic republic.”

....... Aipac’s secret has always been an impressive system of “key contacts,” local volunteers — preferably friends, community leaders or former classmates of lawmakers — assigned to cultivate each senator and House member.

...... Aipac has helped create and maintain a staunchly pro-Israel Congress, producing bipartisan support for foreign aid and military and intelligence cooperation, most recently $500 million for missile defense and $3.3 billion for security assistance. Aipac spent $3.5 million last year on lobbying, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks lobbying and campaign expenditures. .....

Some liberal Democrats, including young Jews, are abandoning the organization.

“This split between Republicans and Democrats on Israel is real, and is mirrored in a split between the government of Israel and the American Jewish community,” said the diplomat Martin Indyk, who worked for Aipac in the 1980s and is now with the Council on Foreign Relations.

“And since the American Jewish community is a pillar of the Democratic Party and is Aipac’s base, you’ve got kind of a perfect storm.”.......

I never thought criticizing Israel was anti-semitic but it is anti-American because it makes no dam sense. israel treats women as the equals of men AND YET egg sucking american liberals attack Israel BEFORE they would ever criticize an arab muslim country that does not treat women as the equals of men which is completely illogical in terms of what liberals believe regarding modern feminism which they have been catering to from it's start.

Your ignorance of world affairs, diplomacy and the real world never ceases to amaze me.  The US supports Israel because doing so in 1948 was the right thing to do, more or less.  The 1948 war did nothing to resolve the issue of the Palestinians and other non-Jews who lived in Palestine at the time.  It continues to worsen. It did give the world's Jews a homeland though.

In 1941, 70% of the population of Palestine was Arab with less than 30% being Jewish.  So who's country really was it?  Remember, the Jews lost it a long time ago and began the Diaspora when Jews left the Palestinian areas.

More importantly, the US supports Israel because American Jews support it and they are a very, very influential lobbying group in the US.  Not to mention a group that has contributed lots of money to candidates over the years.  Of course, that is no different than the multitude of other lobbying and financially influential groups and individuals in US.

The US now supports Arab countries because they have the oil!!!  Not to mention they are the real counter to Iranian expansionism.  Israel may have a large military and nuclear weapons, but it is not the power it was in 1960's and before.

Also would you want the US to be drug into another war that would last for several decades against Arab and Muslim nations and their allies?  Since you have never been to war, you have no idea what you are asking.

The US has criticized Arab countries for the way they treat women, non-Arab minorities and others.  I was there for the Gulf War and the US military and state department forced Arab nations to treat US female personnel exactly as males.

One other area where your ignorance shows is that if US criticizes Arab nations too much, the current pro-US rulers will be overthrown and replaced with one similar to what we have in Iran.  That is pretty much how Iran got to be an anti-American nation - our interfering in their domestic social, governmental and religious areas.

The current argument is over how much influence Israel and American Jews have over US foreign policy.  It is not anti-Semitic or anti-American to say too much.  Israel receives more military aid from US than any other country.

Since some posters here are so obsessed with dredging up ancient history all the time, it's about time for fair play.  Ancient Israel was invaded so they simply took back what's theirs.

Let the double standards begin.

(oh it was a long time ago so NOW it doesn't count)

OK, so let's give America back to the Amerindians, Native-Americans or Indians.  Start with where you live.

Fox host Jeanine Pirro says that Ilhan Omar's hijab may mean that she's against the Constitution.

1. The irony here is that Pirro is a practicing Catholic.

And the slur she's making against Omar - that if she follows the Koran, she can't follow the Constitution

- is remarkably similar to the arguments that were once made against Catholic politicians.........

When JFK ran for president, he was forced to defuse this charge from the start. So he declared "I am not the Catholic candidate for president," and felt the need to say explicitly that he, and not the Church, would be making policy. ....

ICE investigating agents for sharing social media posts promoting conspiracy theories about Omar: report

“Hell just make her the Director of National Security, obviously she not only took TERRORIST classes, she sat in class WITH THEM,” Derewonko wrote in the post, which was screen-grabbed by ABC.

Netanyahu Says Israel Is 'Nation-State Of The Jewish People And Them Alone'

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is drawing criticism for saying that Israel is "the national state, not of all its citizens, but only of the Jewish people." The comment prompted many people — including Israel's president and the star of Wonder Woman — to defend Israel's Palestinian Arab minority.

Palestinian Arab citizens are about a fifth of Israel's population and often face discrimination and accusations of disloyalty.

The prime minister's comment set off criticism, debates over Israel's true nature —

......On Monday, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said on Twitter that Israel "has complete equality of rights for all its citizens," adding, "There are no first-class citizens, and there are no second-class voters. We are all equal in the voting booth. We are all represented at the Knesset."

Rivlin did not refer to Netanyahu directly, saying in a tweet, "Recently, when political thinking is turning all reason on its head, we hear entirely unacceptable remarks about the Arab citizens of Israel."

For political observers in Israel, the story has echoes of 2015, when Netanyahu posted a last-minute video on the day of a national election, claiming (falsely, it turned out) that right-wing rule of Israel was in danger because large numbers of Arab voters were heading to the polls..........

Beto O’Rourke Slams Benjamin Netanyahu, Saying Israeli Has “Openly Sided With Racists”

“I believe in peace and dignity and full human rights for the Palestinian people and the Israeli people,” the former Texas Congressman said. “The only way to achieve that,” he added, “is a two-state solution.”

The difficulty, O’Rourke continued, is that “right now we don’t have the best negotiating partners on either side: we have a prime minister in Israel who has openly sided with racists

— who, in a previous election, warned that the Arabs were coming to the polls — and on the Palestinian side, you have an ineffectual leader, in Mahmoud Abbas, who has not been very effective in bringing his side to the table either.”......

Trump: Time to recognise Golan Heights as Israeli territory-

"......Richard Haass, a former senior US state department official who is now president of the Council on Foreign Relations think-tank, said he "strongly disagreed" with Mr Trump. He said

such recognising Israeli sovereignty would violate a UN Security Council resolution, "which rules out acquiring territory by war".

So critics have concluded this was a blatant attempt to give Mr Netanyahu a boost in a hotly-contested election.

If so, it's one that violates important principles of international law, they say: Mr Trump has endorsed the seizure of territory, and will have no moral authority to criticise Russia for doing so in Ukraine's Crimea....

In 1981, Israel's parliament passed legislation applying Israeli "law, jurisdiction, and administration" to the Golan, in effect annexing the territory. But the international community did not recognise the move and maintained that the Golan was occupied Syrian territory. UN Security Council Resolution 497 declared the Israeli decision "null and void and without international legal effect".

Three years ago, when former President Barack Obama was in office, the US voted in favour of a Security Council statement expressing deep concern that Mr Netanyahu had declared Israel would never relinquish the Golan.

Syria has always insisted that it will not agree a peace deal with Israel unless it withdraws from the whole of the Golan. The last US-brokered direct peace talks broke down in 2000, while Turkey mediated in indirect talks in 2008.

There are more than 30 Israeli settlements in the Golan, which are home to an estimated 20,000 people. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this. The settlers live alongside some 20,000 Syrians, most of them Druze Arabs, who did not flee when the Golan was captured.

Putin was very happy to hear this.  Now Trump has defacto recognized Russia's right to seize Crimea and part of Ukraine.  Will be used by many nations as US "support" of seizing land for "defensive" measures.

It does prove that Israel and its American supporters have an inordinate influence on American politics.  Otherwise Trump would not have said it and he especially would not have said it primarily to get Netanyahu re-elected.
