Could Lincoln Be Elected In America Today?

11 posts in this topic

He's often hailed as the greatest President but, if he was only arriving on the political scene today for the first time, could Abraham Lincoln be elected President?

For starters, in this media era, he's not exactly photogenic. Would people even pay serious attention to him?

For which party would he run? Would he be an independent?

How do you think would he fare in debates today? Imagine one with Trump, the latter resorting to gutter tactics including a possible attack on his appearance? If one female candidate didn't "look Presidential" to Trump because of her appearance, what would he say of the ungainly Lincoln and, even moreso, how would Abe have replied? Would he have stooped low, too, or would he have retained his integrity?

(Actually, some newspaper columnists in Lincoln's day referred to Lincoln as "an ape" so maybe he would be prepared to deal with Trump, at that).

Doubt if his view on equal but separate policy will go over well.

But to run today, his birth would had been during the 20th century, so Abe be a different person altogether.  He was the product of the 19th century.

As Ham noted, he didn't believe in racial equality so today he would probably be seen as far, far right. He would certainly hate most of the 20th and 21st century presidents for their foreign policies of interventionism. I think he would support religion from an empiricist perspective but remain skeptical on the inside (similar to Cultural Christians/ Christian Atheists) at least and so be regarded as right wing in that regard. How he would adapt his ideas to the present is really something to ponder but going from his actual policies of the time it seems like most would not even seriously consider him for president.

I don't think race would have been the first issue that they would have looked at regarding Abraham Lincoln.

As Log Cabin Republicans may have observed, Lincoln was either a closeted homosexual and/ or a bisexual.

This issue would have put him at the Forefront of everything that's going on today.

I'm just guessing, that whomever his opponent was would have tried to out him or blackmail him on this issue.

It would have been interesting to see how he dealt with that.

That's just conjecture from decades after he died (of course this whole thread is conjecture anyways). There is absolutely zero conclusive evidence Lincoln was gay or bi. It's even more likely he was an Asexual if anything considering he seemed depressed and disinterested in everything. Seeing how he would react to world history of the 20th century is interesting but the actual ideas he supported at the time would absolutely not garner support today. His opinions on race, theology/ religion, tariffs, economy and segregation would pretty much doom him in the eyes of the entire public today.

Well, you know these days it's not enough to BE "presidential" but you gotta LOOK "presidential" too.  And that neckwear he's sporting in that old photo proves(by today's "standards") that he ain't.

And it's a cinch that these days, he'd have never grown that BEARD!  :o (AIEEEE!)

Abraham Lincoln's 4 sons with Mary Todd Lincoln are not conjecture. And I can imagine that his being asexual is definitely conjecture.

As far as being depressed is concerned, there are cases of numerous individuals who used sexuality as an outlet for depression.

There is absolutely zero conclusive evidence that Lincoln was asexual.

I think Thomas Jefferson would have been more fun for this thread of conjecture.  LOL

Lincoln was a Vampire hunter, so he must have been a Republican, going after those who suck the blood from the government these days (like socialists). This is the type of person who could get a lot of votes, so yes he is electable.

You really do not know much about history.

Those Confederate soldiers just can't stay dead.  You're right he could fit in today, since no one can't seem to bury the past. (statues, etc)
