Tonight: In his first U.S. network interview since tensions escalated in the past month,

Door is 'wide open' to negotiation if Trump lifts his sanctions on Iran, Zarif says

Iran's top diplomat says it could have developed nuclear weapons but made a decision “a long time ago”

not to build the bomb......

Iran Foreign Minister Zarif tells @LesterHoltNBC that while he does not believe Trump wants war, he believes “they're people around him who wouldn’t mind.”

......Zarif said the door is "wide open" to diplomacy if Trump removes the array of sanctions he has imposed since 2017 that have slashed the country’s oil exports and damaged its economy.

"Once those sanctions are lifted, then ... the room for negotiation is wide open," Zarif said during a visit to New York for a U.N. conference.

Zarif said it was the United States, not Iran, that had undermined diplomacy by walking away from the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers.

"It is the United States that left the bargaining table. And they're always welcome to return," Zarif said.....

Trump Says U.S. Ship Downed Iran Drone;

Tehran Denies Losing One

"Seyed Abbas AraghchiVerified account @araghchi

We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else. I am worried that USS Boxer has shot down their own UAS by mistake!"

10:03 PM - 18 Jul 2019
==================================

A spokesman for Iran’s armed forces said Trump’s remarks were “delusional and imaginary.”

“All drones belonging to the Islamic Republic that have been deployed in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, including the drone referred to by the U.S. president, returned safely to their bases,” Brig. Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi was quoted as saying........

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement that the Boxer “was in international waters conducting a planned inbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz” when a drone “closed within a threatening range” and “the ship took defensive action.”

The confrontation comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high over a spate of attacks on cargo ships, the downing of an American drone and the British seizure of a tanker carrying Iranian oil....

UK foreign secretary says 2 vessels seized by Iran

"British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says two vessels have been seized by Iranian authorities in the Strait of Hormuz.

Hunt said Friday he will shortly attend an emergency government session to see what can be done to secure the release of the two vessels.

He says they are a British-flagged vessel and a Liberian-flagged vessel.

He said the crews comprise a range of nationalities but are not believed to include British citizens.......

What I heard on the news, the drone was jammed.  Bet that device is desired by many.

So, do you still think Trump should clobber North Korea as well?  You were all for that before Donny and Kim fell in love.

It's all about the $.  The U.S. does business with Saudi but has been shut out of Iran.  Venezuela too.

In the 50's and 60's the U.S. used to overthrow governments around the world that threatened to shut out the American corporations that were **** them.  It's just a bit more subtle now.

Spoken like a true Trumpist who has never gone to war for America.  As someone with considerable military experience studying, training for and going to war in the Middle East.  It ain't as easy as you think buddy!  That is why Iraq and Afghanistan have turned into forever wars.  Then add in all the failed US efforts in other areas of the Middle East.

Of all the countries in the Middle East, save Israel, Iran is probably the strongest militarily, socially and politically.  Our overthrow of a legitimate government in Iran to install the Shah is what led to his overthrow and the current regime.

By the way you left out Reagan.

Audio emerges of moments before Iran seized British ship

In the exchange, an Iranian vessel apparently tells a frigate with the British Royal Navy to “alter its course,” telling the frigate it needs to inspect the Stena Impero for security purposes, according to the network.

The British vessel responds that under international law, the tanker “must not be impaired.”

British junior defense minister Tobias Ellwood said Sunday the U.K. is considering several possible options in response to Iran, including possible economic sanctions, according to CNN.

"International law requires that the right of transit passage shall not be impeded, and therefore the Iranian action constitutes illegal interference," the UK said in a letter seen by CNN.

Iran’s ambassador to the U.K., said on Twitter Sunday that factions within the U.K. government sought to use the incident to “escalate existing tensions.”

"UK government should contain those domestic political forces who want to escalate existing tension between Iran and the UK well beyond the issue of ships," Hamid Baeidinejad tweeted...........

Iran tanker seizure shows oil price has become a ‘broken barometer’ for Mideast tension

Key Points
  • The gain in oil Friday was relatively modest, even after the Iran’s Revolutionary Guard seized a British tanker and temporarily stopped a second one, in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for about a fifth of the world’s crude oil.
  • Oil’s response was counter what traders would have expected in the past, when any sign oil could be disrupted would send prices spiking.
  • The fact there is so much U.S. supply is one factor, as well as the concerns hanging over the market about trade wars and a global slowdown hitting demand.

The move would block him from doing business with Americans

FOREIGN POLICY

Iran mocks Pompeo’s offers to visit

‘Instead of making empty and disingenuous offers, @SecPompeo can accept any of the many requests from Iranian reporters to interview US officials,’ the Iranian foreign minister tweeted.

Iranians are widely considered among the most hospitable people in the Middle East, willing to invite random strangers to dine with them in their homes.

But Iran’s leaders aren’t quite ready to roll out the red carpet for Mike Pompeo.

The secretary of State in recent days has been urging Iran’s Islamist government to let him visit the country. He says he wants a chance to tell ordinary Iranians “the truth, unfiltered, unabridged” about the oppressive clerics who rule them.

The biting Iranian response came Wednesday.

“Instead of making empty and disingenuous offers, @SecPompeo can accept any of the many requests from Iranian reporters to interview US officials,” tweeted Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. “He has refused til now, as he knows he has to be accountable to rigourous [sic] questioning—the very same way I am by the US media.”

The barbed exchange came the same day the U.S. imposed sanctions on Zarif. It is the latest variation of an information war both sides are waging amid a broader face-off that has escalated since President Donald Trump quit the Iran nuclear deal last year. The issue of visiting each other’s countries surfaced earlier this month, when Zarif came to New York for meetings at the United Nations.

“We aren’t afraid of [Zarif] coming to America where he enjoys the right to speak freely,” Pompeo wrote Sunday on Twitter. “Are the facts of [Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s] regime so bad he cannot let me do the same thing in Tehran?”

Pompeo also tweeted out a video of him, in response to a question from Bloomberg TV, saying he’d “happily” go to Tehran — a visit that, if it were to happen, would be historic, given that the U.S. and Iran cut off diplomatic ties 40 years ago.
