This seems mislabeled: a lot of SciFi is not about space exploration or extraterrestrial life. It's a good selection, but the title should be more specific to the theme.

Also, I think they ought to have paired the two versions of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956 and 1978). Both are excellent, but for different reasons.

On TCM's schedule, many of these films are listed as "horror." I guess they are science fiction horror films? Not sure why they don't have a separate designation for just science fiction.

Yeah, I was surprised they didn't include the 1978 version.

Theory: the titles selected for July 9 are all frequently connected to the notion that 50's 'space invaders' movies are commentaries on anti-Red hysteria. Molly Haskell and others on TCM have regularly presented that thesis - and I'd be surprised if that is not the organizing them for 7/9/2019.

Interesting.

The theme for the 2nd will focus on pioneering efforts in the genre.

The theme for the 16th is obviously going to be the space race, a nation trying to get a man on the moon.

The night of the 23rd seems like it's focusing on time travelers/astronauts.

The theme for the 30th will be along the lines of sci-fi blockbusters.

So any news on the Ball State - TCM class (syllabus, professor, games, etc.?) yet or do we just have the July schedule of what is airing on TCM for now?

Someone on another thread said TCM is not partnering with the university this year. This will just be a monthly spotlight without any tie-in to an online course.

July 2019: The History of Science Fiction

nothing original here. Seems little effort was put into programming

but as mentioned elsewhere, TCM's NOT a big sci-fi fan :(

The only movies they are missing

Planet of the Apes ('68)

Soylent Green ('73)

Alien ('79)

The Thing ('82) or Blade Runner ('82)

And Finally Back to the Future ('85)

So what science fiction would you want to air ?

I thought about SOYLENT GREEN, but figured it was left out because it didn't fit in with any of their themes.

BACK TO THE FUTURE would have been a great one to include with the other sci-fi blockbusters on the fourth evening.

I would have liked to see STARMAN included too.

Your probably right about Soylent Green.

And Starman ('84) does sound interesting,I heard about it,but never got the chance to see it.
