I totally disagree with  Jakie boy's purpose in creating this thread, but I have long thought a state and federal holiday for one man is a bit much.  There is no other individual so honored.  Columbus Day is not observed many places and is declining.  Christmas may be an observation for Jesus, but not so much anymore.

I prefer holidays that recognize groups or specific events that relate to everyone.

Took enough time to realize he wasn't born on December 25th.  Date of his birth is unknown. I have no issues with MLK Day.

I would have no issues with it either if it was African-American Day or maybe American Minorities Day or something similar.  Would we have MLK Day if had not been assassinated?

Surprised no one wants a JFK Day, considering Lincoln was assassinated as well.

We have Presidents Day to honor all past presidents.  We no longer have Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays.  Although I think presidents day is on the birthday of one of them.  Too lazy to look it up.
