Breaking Out of the Democrats’ Paralysis on Immigration

Jeff Faux

August 14, 2019

Democrats need more than compassionate policies for refugees. They need a policy to deal with the immigrant flow itself.

"....Democrats have the moral high ground—arguing for compassion and history; the country after all was built by immigrants. And they have a reasonable set of policies to deal with the humanitarian side of the issue, including rules to ensure humane treatment of detainees, mobilizing federal resources to erase the backlog of applications for refugee status, and leniency for long-term undocumented residents.

The public is with them—to a point. Americans are repelled by Trump’s racist and xenophobic rants, and the brutality toward families and children. They favor a path to citizenship for the undocumented who came here as children. Trump’s wall is not popular.

But although the public supports legal immigration, a majority—well beyond Trump’s base—also want it limited....

Democrats are appropriately loud and clear in their demand for higher minimum wages and access to health care. But as important as they are, these policies do not address the fear, among those in what should be their solid political base, of losing what is already an increasingly shaky claim to bare-minimum social and economic status in American society.

And on issues of border security, which could address that fear, Democratic voices seem muted and evasive. Their policy paralysis is rooted in the politics of the 2020 election. The mobilization of the Latino vote depends on the enthusiastic support of Latino leaders ........

SQUARELY FACING the border-security question does not require Democrats to abandon the moral argument.

It requires them to broaden it, from one exclusively based on compassion for the destitute, to acknowledgment of America’s own role in creating the conditions that have made them so desperate to leave their own countries. ...

Today, I am ending my campaign for president.

I am so proud of this team and all we've accomplished. But I think it’s important to know how you can best serve. To our supporters: Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Now, let's go beat Donald Trump and win back the Senate.

Cattle call?     Looks like a lot of bull is going to be spoken here.

PS: I posted this before one of the conservatives here did something similar,,, since the opening was too wide and so obvious.     So don't get your panties in a bunch!

CNN's version of winners and losers.  Chris Cillizza picked - Winners: Buttigieg; Klobuchar, Yang and Sanders.  Losers: Warren, Bidden, Harris, Steyer.

Warren's problem was that the others attacked her as the front runner and she really could not adequately defend her far left, progressive, unfunded socialist plans.

Interestingly, A-O-C's endorsement of Sanders during the debate supposedly helped him.

Warren held her ground, weathered the blows and emerged largely unscathed. She struck back at Klobuchar and others who challenged her, accusing them of "vague campaigns that nibble around the edges of big problems." ........

For those looking for an especially strong debate performance from Biden after intense scrutiny over his son's business dealings, tonight wasn't it. .........

(Sanders) had a heart attack two weeks ago, but you wouldn't know it from his energetic and boisterous performance Tuesday night, consistent with past debates. That may quell fans' fears that the Vermont senator won't be able to carry on an aggressive campaign —

Facing what could be the last debate she qualifies for, Klobuchar delivered her best showing to date. .........

Struggling to get his campaign out of the single digits, Buttigieg aimed to portray himself as a centrist, likely hoping to rise should Biden stumble. ...

  • Kamala Harris spoke passionately on access to abortion;
  • O'Rourke was personal and heartfelt on gun control;
  • Andrew Yang hit on his signature issue — how technology is changing the workforce;
  • Tulsi Gabbard bolstered her anti-war stance in a tense exchange with Buttigieg over U.S. troops in Syria;
  • Tom Steyer, tagged as the only billionaire on stage, said even he was for taxing the rich;
  • Cory Booker edged a discussion on gun control toward violence in the inner cities and away from focusing on only mass shootings; and
  • Julian Castro, raising the topic of immigration, which was barely touched on in the debate, noted, "I also want people to think — the folks this week that saw those images of ISIS prisoners running free — to think about how absurd it is that this president is caging kids on the border and effectively letting ISIS prisoners run free."

Clinton says Russia is grooming Gabbard to be a third-party candidate

Gabbard fired back on Twitter, calling the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee the "queen of the warmongers."

.........“I’m not making any predictions, but I think they’ve got their eye on somebody who’s currently in the Democratic primary and they’re grooming her to be the third-party candidate,” Clinton said in an interview for Plouffe’s Campaign HQ podcast.

“She’s the favorite of the Russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far and that’s assuming Jill Stein will give it up because she’s also a Russian asset.”

Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill confirmed that the former secretary of state was referring to Gabbard......

Gabbard, who has previously said she would not run as a third-party candidate, fired back on Twitter.

"Thank you @HillaryClinton," Gabbard tweeted. "You, the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long, have finally come out from behind the curtain. From the day I announced my candidacy, there has been a concerted campaign to destroy my reputation. We wondered who was behind it and why. Now we know — it was always you, through your proxies and powerful allies in the corporate media and war machine, afraid of the threat I pose.".......

Gabbard is frequently mentioned in Russian propaganda and media, including by RT, the news agency backed by the Kremlin, and she has been criticized for foreign policy views that some say are aligned too closely with Russia and other foreign adversaries of the United States — especially her views on Syria and Syrian President Bashar Assad. ........

Yellow my Stone, Old Faithful is wearing out the Twitter account channeling Teddy Roosevelt this time.

Considering what trump's actual record is on the environment and our Federal lands, he'd better watch out if TR is really in the (White) House.

Rep. Gabbard when asked if she disavows the support she receives online from Russian state channels:

“I don't control them. I don't control what anyone else says or does. All I can do is focus on the message that I am bringing to this campaign.”

So, Gabbard is saying that she might be an 'unwitting' Russian asset but has no control over it?

No,  Gabbard is saying what she is saying;   she quickly disavowed the support from David Dukes  since that was directly support from a select individual.    That is much different than Russian state channels being positive about her policy stances.

Is Trudeau an unwitting asset of Obama;  that was direct support from a foreigner and I don't call Trudeau disavowing this.

The point being that this type of mudslinging is silly and clueless and used by politicians that can't attack others based on their policy stances.   (which is clearly the case with warmonger Hillary).

Obama is a true supporter of Trudeau as far as I can tell.  The Russians on the other hand could care less.  They meddle to make America weaker and do so by supporting candidates who are going to take away votes from Trump's likely competitor.  The people who testified before Congress said as much.

The Russians love her anyway because she spends most of her time building up  Assad and his criminal regime. And if the Russians are paying her, they ought to be.

I watch a lot of Russian news when I'm in the EU (a month or so a year, since Russia-Today and other programs are in English),  and I find their news reporting on the Middle East to be more balanced than what I can find here in the USA (except PBS).       I didn't find any of this reporting to be meddling in America politics but instead just pointing out the differences between the stuck-in-the-mud Middle East politics of 99% of American politicians catering to all things Israel and US pols like Gabbard.

There is as much truth that Gabbard is a Russian asset as there is that Hillary attacked Gabbard because she is an Israeli asset.

I did say "unwitting."  Putin would love for Gabbard supporters to stay home as Bernie supporters did and hand the election to Donald Trump.

I know you put in "unwitting" but to me the posts still implied insane Hillary was on-to-something.

NOT.   Instead the only thing that was revealed is that Hillary has totally lost-it.

PS:  As for either 3rd party candidates and their supporters  or Dem-party-losers and their supporters, not coming out to vote for the Dem nominee in 2020:    Isn't Hillary the one that is upsetting Gabbard supporters and that could lead to them NOT voting for the Dem or even,  please-say-no,  voting for Trump?    So it is Hillary that is unwitting doing Putin's bidding.

If Hillary wants to hurt Gabbard, all she needs to do is campaign for her.

"You're a Russian asset" is Hillary's standard attack on anybody she dont like. She's got more ties to Russia than anybody that she's accusing lol.
