November 2019 schedule is up

76 posts in this topic

Dennis Miller and Friends (not sure yet who those friends will be) get five nights to share their favorite films.

Nancy Gates is receiving a memorial tribute. She passed away in March.

The month-long spotlight is focusing on cinematographers.

Veterans Day will be observed.

Bette's films air in four 24-hour blocks. It's the third time she's been SOTM.

There's a regular guest programmer plus a TCM Backlot programmer.

Directors that get primetime salutes include Martin Scorsese, Gillo Pontecorvo and John Ford.

Teorema on November 10th. :o Is this the first Pasolini film to appear on TCM? When can we expect to see Salo?

Oh, well, if they are going to repeat a SOTM, I don't mind Bette. How many times this year have we had a first timer?

DENNIS MILLER? UGH.

Mamma Roma has been on a few times, and will be on again after Teorema.

We don't need to look too far to see how bad things turn out when celebrities get to takeover programming ...but Dennis Miller was a guest programmer about 10 years ago and his choices were pretty good IMO: DODSWORTH, THE THIRD MAN, SUSPICION, MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE. ...so I'll wait to see how it goes.

Guess I totally missed any info about that vote. Who was her competitor?

Bette Davis has two Criterion releases in November: All About Eve and Now, Voyager.  I am going to speculate that this is the reason behind her selection.

I don't mind, I love Bette!

It's interesting to note that Sunday nights are now programmed with "The Essentials". During November, the Sunday Essentials will be TBA, ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, SHANE, and ROMAN HOLIDAY. ... I presume this is 'The Best of The Essentials' - but I suppose we'll find out in time.

If we have to have these 24 hour Veterans Day tributes, couldn't we show The Thin Red Line?  Likewise if Davis is going to be SOTM, couldn't we have Death on the Nile again?

There's a lot of interesting things on the schedule.  I am at work right now, so I don't have time to analyze every day, but this is what popped out at me.

The best thing about November? There are 5 Saturdays--meaning 5 NOIR ALLEY! There are also 3 paydays, which is equally exciting.

Noir Alley

11/2 Sweet Smell of Success
11/9 Johnny Eager
11/16 The Hitch-Hiker
11/23 Kansas City Confidential
11/30 The Mask of Dimitrios

11/5
Bette Davis pre-code.  There are a ton of films scheduled that I haven't seen.

11/6 The Picture Makers...sounds like a documentary about cinematography?

We were talking about Women in Prison movies on another thread recently and Dennis Miller has "Caged Heat" and "Women's Prison" which I haven't seen and was recommended.

I'm not sure those are Dennis Miller's picks, or just TCM Underground programming.

Just like some people say they should eliminate genre acting categories in the Oscars, Golden Globes, et. al., I wonder if TCM will ever have a Backlot vote pitting an actor against an actress.

Like a famous husband and wife team: Woodward or Newman; Taylor or Burton; Ozzie or Harriet..? :)

Doing a major happy dance about Blondell finally getting her due.  Still cannot believe that this year was Paul Newman's first SOTM designation!

Well, Newman had several primetime spotlights...plus a Summer Under the Stars Day. So even though it took a while for them to give him a whole month-long retrospective, it's not like they had been ignoring him.

Same with Blondell. Her films are in frequent rotation on TCM, especially her Warner Brothers titles. When Glenda Farrell was Star of the Month last year, a lot of those movies costarred Joan Blondell.
