Peter Fonda (1940-2019)

43 posts in this topic

And ULEE'S GOLD too( which I haven't seen though...)

But his ability and willingness to parodize his "Captain America" character from EASY RIDER( as in "Ghost Rider" and "Wild Hogs" ) proved(to me) that although he took his craft seriously, he didn't take himself too seriously.  And I admire that in anybody, actor or not.

Rest in peace, Pete.

So I imagine there will be a Peter Fonda memorandum where TCM plays his movies but because of the SUTS it will be postponed for next month? usually they just get rid of the Silent sunday nd import and play it then.

They will probably do something in September or October...unless they wait until the end of the year like they did for Burt Reynolds last year. It would be nice if they could get Jane and Bridget to co-host an evening of Peter's films. That would be ideal.

It would be nice if a tribute to Peter Fonda was  launched as soon as possible.

His work is definitely due for re-evaluation.

I agree.     I just reviewed his filmography.    I wasn't aware he was in so many films or that he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar (for Ulee's Gold).

The round wire glasses Peter wore in Ulee's Gold were the same pair his dad wore in On Golden Pond.  RIP Peter Fonda.

My guilty pleasure Peter Fonda film - 'Open Season' (1974).

Nasty movie, nasty role for him to play.

Great cast includes William Holden, Cornelia Sharpe, John Phillip Law and Richard Lynch. Lynch is excellent in it.

It's almost impossible to find an unedited version of it. Rumor has it that co-star Cornelia Sharpe's producer husband Martin Bregman has bought up the rights and won't let it be released. The reasoning is supposedly that she's ashamed of having appeared in an "exploitation film".

No idea if that's true - and it really isn't anywhere near that nasty, other than psychologically.

Whenever I'd hear the name Peter Fonda, I'd always think of 'Open Season' as quickly as I'd think of 'Easy Rider'.

Well, he will definitely be included in the TCM Remembers video in December.

He said that he was deeply ashamed of his first film, "Tammy and the Doctor".

But he shouldn't have been.

It got him from summer stock in Fishkill, New York to the big screen.

And, then, he went on to "The Victors" and "Lilith".

This just in. Peter's two best known performances are airing on TCM on Sunday, September 15:

8 PM Ulee's Gold

10 PM Easy Rider

Previously, TCM had scheduled an Art Carney double feature on that particular evening.

I would assume Carney gets bumped to December or January now.

Lilith! Oh yes, he was exceptional in that. That whole film was very underrated. Quite risque for 1964. Warren Beatty, that might be his finest performance, and Jean Seburg was at her best too. Also really early appearances from Gene Hackman, Jessica Walter, and Olympia Dukakis (unbilled). Would be nice if it turned up on TCM someday.

TCM occasionally shows it.

I'm not even sure they'll do one. They seem to pick and choose who they'll honor with one.
