Actors You Would Have Liked To See Play Bond?

52 posts in this topic

With the upcoming spotlight in September on James Bond films, I felt this would be a fun topic of discussion.

Who are some actors that were never cast as James Bond that you would have liked to see portray the character?

Here are my choices:

Terence Stamp - I think he would have been marvelous. He had the looks, the talent, the sarcasm. A very underrated actor.

Oliver Reed - Reed had such a terrific presence on screen. With his manner and delivery, Reed would have been a natural fit in the role and highly memorable.

Patrick McGoohan - Excellent in Danger Man/Secret Agent, McGoohan would have been a perfect choice for Bond. Unfortunately, he declined the role, but at least we have a good idea of how he would have behaved as Bond from his portrayal of John Drake.

Terence Stamp would have been good. Different, maybe as a more calculating Bond.

I can't see Oliver Reed. I like him as an actor, but not as Bond. He would have been a terrific villain, though.

I would have liked McGoohan as M.

Looking through a list of British actors, I see a lot that would have made great villains, but none that I would have liked as Bond.

I don't think TERENCE STAMP was as underrated as he was misused.

And as I never cared much for OLIVER REED, I'd have to pass him up.

ALAN BATES however, could have fit the bill better IMHO.

I think Terence Stamp could have made a good Bond.  He'd certainly be more along the lines of Connery than Moore.  He would have looked great in a tux, maybe a more mod Bond.  Oliver Reed would have been a good bad guy or rogue agent, for me.

How about who would have made a good Bond girl?  Ava Gardner?  Julie Christie?

This is a tougher one to picture I think because we all have an image of Reed as Bill Sikes or Athos in The Three Musketeers. Seeing him in a clip like this gave me the idea.

I agree to an extant. He was most definitely misused and also had some bad decisions/bad luck. Supposedly, he turned down the Alfie film, even though he played the part on Broadway, and was the original choice for the lead in Blowup, but was dropped for David Hemmings. Who knows what his career would have looked like with those two roles. I would say he is underrated in the sense that his name isn't often mentioned with the likes of O'Toole, Caine, Finney, but I feel he was just as good.

Bates would have been interesting and fun to see.

Absolutely. He seemed so at ease in the part.

I would have loved to see Julie play a Bond girl. Based off of Harper, I think Pamela Tiffin could have been good too. I'll also mention Catherine Deneuve.

Cary seems the quintessential match for Bond. It's a shame how the timing worked with him approaching 60 as Dr. No was filmed. Clive would be excellent.

I just saw Tiffin in "Summer and Smoke".  She was memorable as the local girl who sets her sights on Laurence Harvey, goes away to school, and nabs him from fluttery, fussy Geraldine Paige.  Catherine Deneuve would have been great!

I tend to agree with Clive Owen. However, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone better than Sean Connery. Pierce Brosnan was my second favorite. I'll have to give some thought to whom might be good from today's stars.

Not sure he had quite the proper physicality to pull it off completely and depending upon the "type" of Bond you're after...either the more "tough" kind like Connery or Craig, or the more "sophisticated" kind like Moore or Brosnan...but if it's the latter sort, I'm thinking Laurence Harvey might have made a fairly decent Bond.

I put Bond into three categories:

  • The debonair, cool gentlemen Cary Grant in To Catch a Spy type: (That was supposedly why Cary was offered the role) Connery, Brosnan
  • The rough and ready guy from the novels: Dalton, Craig
  • Other: Moore, Lazenby

I see it as: Do they want to make money choose A, or be faithful to the novels B, or desperate to save the franchise C.

Once upon a time I thought this guy would be a good choice

You were obviously remarking on an image that TOM posted, which(of course) didn't show on my PC screen.  So I'm left wondering what it was.....

SLAYTON:  I don't think Hayward would have made a good Bond!  ;)  And as she was 45 by the time the first Bond film was made, unlikely a choice for a Bond "girl". :D

But, as early Bond girls;

LEE REMICK wouldn't have been bad....

JULIE NEWMAR   and...

TINA LOUISE would have been OK too.

Not to mention the WAYNE sisters( Carol and Nina)!  :P

Sure, neither were at a MERYL STREEP level of acting chops, but THAT wasn't a prerequisite for being a BOND GIRL, was it?  ;) Not based on the ones they had, anyway.

Well, if you want to go way back, maybe William Powell of THIN MAN fame might have worked. Of course he was in his 60s when Casino Royal was first published.

Say, sepiatone and NipkowDislc, I was serious.  If you have doubts about them, I refer you to The Spider and the Fly (1949), and Tulsa (1949) for Rolfe and Hayward, respectively:
