'Tough love' made the Turkish-US deal over Ankara's Syria operation happen,

tweeted US President Trump.........

....Trump added the Kurds were happy with the deal.

Heaping praise on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump said: "He's a hell of a leader. He did the right thing. I have great respect for the president."

VP Pence asserts that the US has been in contact today with Kurdish forces, and the US received assurances that "they'll be moving out" and they welcome a ceasefire in order to withdraw from "the safe zone."

Pence said Turkey had agreed to stop military operations for 120 hours in Syria to allow the Kurds to withdraw.
After the Kurdish forces leave,
Turkey has committed to a permanent cease-fire but is under no obligation to withdraw its troops.....

Pence said Washington will impose no further sanctions on Turkey once there is a ceasefire in northern Syria, and that it will withdraw existing sanctions once the Turkish military operation is done.
-----------------------------

Turkish foreign minister says agreement was reached with the US for Turkish forces to control the "safe zone" in northern Syria,

and Turkish forces are "pausing the operation," not a "ceasefire," because,
he asserts, "ceasefires can be done only between two legitimate sides."

Read the fine print:

Turkey gets Syrian Kurd land he’s wanted for years.

Kurdish fighters have to disarm and get out.

Russia gains influence.

ISIS does what it wants.

Trump cancels sanctions on Turkey.

Art of the deal!!! If you are Erdogan

Donald Trump has made the United States a turncoat on an allie before the entire world. Russia and Turkey are the winners. The betrayed Kurds have lost, after losing 11,000 men fighting ISIS. ISIS may surge again. They will feel rejuvenated by Trump's withdrawal of American troops.  No wonder members of the American military say they are feeling shame.

Amid scattered fighting, Erdogan threatens to restart Syria operation

.....Trump said Erdogan told him there had been "minor sniper and mortar fire" in the region "that was quickly eliminated" and the Turkish leader assured him in a call that "he very much wants the ceasefire, or pause, to work."

Mustefa Bali, a spokesman for the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), accused Turkey, however, of violating the ceasefire deal reached during a visit to Ankara on Thursday by US Vice President Mike Pence.

"Despite the agreement to halt the fighting,

air and artillery attacks continue to target the positions of fighters, civilian settlements and the hospital" in the border town of Ras al-Ain in northeastern Syria, he said......

"General Mazloum is concerned about the ceasefire holding and was emphatic that he will never agree to the ethnic cleansing of Kurds that is being proposed in Ankara," Graham said.

"A buffer zone is acceptable to the Kurds but a military occupation that displaces hundreds of thousands is not a safe zone," Graham said. "It is ethnic cleansing."...

Erdoğan got the best of Trump

"........Trump lost his leverage to negotiate with both the Turks and the Kurds after the withdrawal and then the letter.

“In buttoning your shirt, if you start out wrong, it’ll be wrong at the end,” Aliriza said. “They’re denying it strenuously within the administration, but everything that happened, happened because of the phone call on the 6th.”.....

"The so-called cease-fire is not what we expected. In fact, it’s not a cease-fire, it’s a demand of capitulation of the Kurds,” he said.

According to a fact sheet given to reporters in Ankara, the so-called “safe zone” from which the YPG is expected to evacuate will be “primarily enforced” by Turkish forces. Defense Secretary Mark Esper confirmed to reporters Friday that U.S. forces would not be involved in enforcing the safe zone.

That means, critics say, Erdoğan won what he wanted all along......

Turkish officials were reportedly surprised at the ease with which the United States agreed to the deal.

“We got everything we wanted,” .....

And while the administration is arguing the cease-fire stops the bloodshed, Edelman warned that it doesn’t address “the issue of how do we repair the damage that had been done.”

Kurdish commander Gen Mazlum Kobane makes an urgent appeal, telling @NBCNews

Syria's Kurds face what could become “the biggest ethnic cleansing operation of the 21st century

... happening in front of the American army's eyes.”

He blames Turkey and Trump.

I don't believe that you just send the UN into hot war zones.  Usually there is some sort of brokered truce before they go in.  And besides this, Turkey wants the Kurds out of their own territory.  Turkey would have to withdraw which the Donald has not even proposed.  He has declared victory already.

Russia would be likely to veto this move anyway.  Probably the U.S. too.

Kurdish forces agree to withdraw from Turkey-Syria border

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/10/kurdish-forces-agree-withdraw-turkey-syria-border-191020055338220.html

Excerpt..

The SDF largely consists of fighters from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), a group Ankara considers "terrorists" linked to Kurdish separatists on its soil.

Seems to be different wordings for buffer zone - Safe, demilitarised, Golan Heights.

Since defense secretary says US troops aren't going home from Syria

- where they’ve been EFFECTIVELY fighting ISIS

- but moving next door to Iraq to fight ISIS from there, the only results are:

1 creating chaos which helps ISIS regroup &

2 leaving US allies, the Kurds, to die.

That shouldn't take too long. :D

We need to capture, or better kill this ISIS SOB  Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.  Maybe hiding behind some woman's skirt like Bin Laden.

Hopefully the end of the Syrian civil war is within sight if the Syrian government and Kurds can find a way to coexist in the long run along with an establish buffer (aka safe) zone.

-_-

That's why it's called propaganda (old Soviet style),  Syria is NOT Vietnam since we are not fighting Assad's forces for the country's liberation.  Russia can thank Obama for dragging us into Syria.

And don't count your chickens before they hatch, Democrats can still win the 2020 election.

Try reading the entire thing.  Russia wants Trump to get a second term ...

Russian Media Cheers Trump’s Moves in Syria: ‘Putin Won the Lottery!’

For Russia, Trump’s presidency is a gift that keeps on giving. The Kremlin’s propagandists see no acceptable alternative among any viable presidential candidates in 2020.

...... .Trump’s mistake in Syria is the unexpected ‘lottery win’ that further strengthened Moscow’s position in the Middle East and undermined America’s prestige as a rational political player and a reliable partner.”   ..

“All of this benefits the Russian Federation,” Yusin marveled. “You know, I’ve been watching Trump’s behavior lately and get seditious thoughts: maybe he really is a Russian agent? He is laboring so hard to strengthen the international image of Russia in general—and Putin in particular...In this situation, Americans—to their chagrin and our enjoyment—are the only losers in this situation.” .....

“It’s been a long time since America has been humiliated this way,” gloated political analyst Mikhail Sinelnikov-Orishak, “They ran away in shame! I can’t recall such a scenario since Vietnam.” ....

has hurt the image and standing of the United States: “America betrayed everyone...Trump also strengthened the anti-American mood in Turkey, when he promised to destroy the Turkish economy.” ......

“I look at Trump and think: ‘May God grant him good health—and another term. This is a great situation for Russia...We can practically sit back and reap the dividends from what others are doing...

Meanwhile, Trump is yet to make a single good deal, which is why I wish him good health, may he flourish and get re-elected...Trump is a great candidate. I applaud him...

For America, this isn’t a very good president.”

That lottery win is like a 10 dollar scratch off. They haven't lost Syria as an ally!

What Russia wants is one thing but like expecting too much for Christmas, may not receive that gift.

Goodness you have that little faith in the Democratic party?

A lot can happen between now and November 2020!

Withdrawing from the region puts the Kurds in danger and is a risk to US security. It's a gift for Erdogan and Assad who want control there but not for us.

If the Kurds simply assimilate while keeping their cultural heritage into the host country where they reside there won't be any danger.  It's this unreasonable desire for a separate state is what's creating problems.

Turkey wants attacks from across their border and from within to stop.

We can't solve another countries ethnic / cultural / religious conflicts nor should we be involved - it's up to them. Example is the Sunni vs Shi_te divide / conflict .
