This is the credited debut performance of an actress who was an Oscar winner (for different films than this one). She is the co-star. Her character is the only one who helps the lead character when no one else will.

Thank you Lav.

He tries to recount his actions in the previous hours; his dog is by his side.

I will take a wild guess and say "Eyes In The Night" (1942) with Edward Arnold as a blind detective with a guide dog.

His feeling of unease increases when he realizes that it is 6 am and getting lighter, not 6 pm and getting darker, meaning he hadn't just dozed off for an hour or so.

He starts to recall the fight he had the previous day with his wife.  She wanted him to accompany her out of town to celebrate his father's birthday; he wanted them to spend the weekend alone together.

He recalls when they first met, and how quickly she flashed her money at him.  Also, how quickly eager she was to marry him.

He begins to wonder if he might've hurt his wife. He then dismisses this with the notion she is in Connecticut to celebrate her father's birthday

He remembers driving into the city, talking to a psychiatrist, who gives him an unsettling diagnosis.

He realizes he is wearing a tie that isn't his, and recalls going to a friend's apartment, who was having a cocktail party.

The friend's wife has him find a tie for the man and to have him wash up.  At the cocktail party, he sees and is awestruck by a beautiful woman, who turns out to be a rising movie star.

The woman maneuvers her way out to the terrace, quickly joined by the smitten man.  She recognizes him, tellling him they'd met before.  When they leave, he invites her to dinner.  She demurs, saying she has a business dinner, to meet people to help promote her latest film.

The movie star discloses they had met years before, but doesn't say where.  She does state he had just had a big hit, and she looked through the newspapers to get information about a follow-up, but doesn't see any; the next time she reads about him was in the society pages, when he was marrying a rich heiress.   He states must've been years before, since he hadn't had a hit in a long time.

They both realize they have previous engagements to get to.  The man attempts to give the movie star a ride to her hotel, but can't remember where he left his car.  They share a cab to his destination.

One last chance with a different type of clue, since no one seems to get it

The main actor plays a Broadway director, and had played the same type of role in a more acclaimed film 2 years earlier.

Probably time to wrap this one up

Last clue:  The actress who played the movie star was in real life involved with the director of the earlier film.  He won Best Director for that film.  However, since he was married and wouldn't divorce, this sent the actress into a depression she never quite overcame.

Figured it out. The movie is Night Without Sleep. Gary Merrill is the lead actor and Linda Darnell is the actress. Linda Darnell and Joe Mankiewicz (All About Eve was the earlier Mankiewicz  directed film and the film  Gary Merrill played the Broadway director) had a real life affair but he refused to get a divorce. Linda was an alcoholic and suffered severe depression over her affair with Joe Mankiewicz.

Lavender,

Great Job as always.  All the particulars are correct.

If no one had gotten it, I would've next said the leading man in this film married in real life his leading lady in the earlier film (Bette Davis).  A lot of cross-fertilisation between the renowned earlier classic, and this largely forgotten film.

Your thread.
