All I can say is, you people who do this must all be geniuses. I could never figure out something like that, just the time and the patience it must take; as for the vast film knowledge necessary for such an undertaking, I won't even go there. Anyone who does this should be offered a chance to present it on the actual TCM programming. I raise my top hat (fashion contribution) to all of you.

I'll admit that I was hoping that you'd enter the challenge. You've been havin' some fun over at the 20th century vole thread. I almost submitted "I like to watch too" on this thread. But I digress. All of us who enter the challenges will admit to doing a lot of hard work. Still, we have so much fun and enjoy the comments and camaraderie of those fellow friends of the TCM message boards. Think about joining the challenge sometime in the future. In the meantime, we can enjoy your posts to the other thread. Thanks for the great feedback!

countess, merci for the nice compliment re. 20th century vole. I have fun doing that, and I always get huge laughs from others' contributions on it (Mr. Bogle seems to have endless hilarious ideas for it). Of course, my photo post "I Like to Watch" was just in response to Mr. ValentineXavier's clever contribution just previous, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being There". It is a fun thread, yes.

 

I plan to read and follow this challenge, but will focus on learning from it this time around. The degree of film knowledge that I see in these challenges and the playfulness with which that knowledge is used is almost awe-inspiring, as well as heartening to know there are so many dedicated cinephiles out there.

I'm hoping maybe I can learn from this. :)

Thank you, countess. I was busy over the weekend, but am crossing the last t's and

dotting the last i's.

 

Miss W, if you are ever so inclined you should try your hand at one. I think you won't

find it all that difficult. Some parts of the process are more enjoyable than others, and

it is definitely time consuming, but it is also doable.

misswonderly - I believe others here are geniuses but I am proof that one not need be a genius to create a schedule. I also do not believe a person must be crazy to do it but I know that it surely helps. It can be hard work but it is also great fun much like doing crosswords or anacrostics.

 

I know that those who create 20th Century Vole movies have great wit, insight and depth of knowledge. The ones I have tried to make are trite, banal and prosaic. It was as tribute to 20th Century Vole thread that I made one for my schedule. It is very superficial artifice compared to ones in thread but I hope it leads some who do not know of that thread to look in on it.

SansFin, baby, I have never found your contributions to the Vole thread to be those negative things you say. As far as I can tell (although C. Bogle is the expert on this) there is no "right" or "wrong" way to do it -whatever works, and I think that your posts on that thread "work". I noticed your "20th Century Vole" part of the programming challenge - looks good !

I just want to congratulate all the Challengers who have submitted schedules so far. As one who participated in many a challenge I have to say it is great to have passed the torch to this group. You guys make all of us "old-timers" proud!

 

Dare I say that Path would be thrilled to see this Challenge still going strong after all these years and be just as thrilled (if not more) by the consistent quality you guys all bring to the show.

 

I look forward to the others who are still working away.

 

You guys won't make it easy to pick a winner but that's how it should be, shouldn't it?

Hey, we need some more people to try their hand at this programming challenge. I'm looking forward to C. Bogle's entry. All of us Vole-aholics enjoy C. Bogle's wit. MissWonderly, you really should enter. Most of us start with some movies we'd like to see on TCM, and one idea leads to another. Every time you work on one of these challenges, you learn more about the history of movies.

Schedule Notes

 

 

I thought it would be a good idea to give foreign language films their due and make

them more accessible beyond the 2 a.m. ghetto where they, for the most part, reside.

I understand that the green eye shade types have to consider the ways and means side

of the equation, but fortunately schedule challengers don't.

 

I've mostly passed the stage of having "crushes" on film stars, but the one exception is

the lovely Our Lady of the Pigtails, Vera Clouzot. Fortunately she appeared in two terrific

French movies, both directed by her husband, Henri-Georges Clouzot.

 

Fall Fashion? My idea of haute couture is faded Levis, pre-scuffed top-siders,

and a vintage Pink Floyd tee shirt. But, fashion challenged as I am, I have managed to

find some wardrobe inspiration in the person of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, whose

name was borrowed by Richard von Krafft-Ebing to coin the word ****. And

what would any "lifestyle" be if it couldn't be commodified, in this case with a number of

fashion accessories? That's a good thing:

 

Kitten With a Whip-Saw bits of this when it was on TCM. I don't believe the title is

literal, but it does appeal to the mind's eye.

 

The Road Warrior-Yes, it's a futuristic macho adventure flick, but there's plenty of

leather and chains flying to keep things interesting.

 

Blue Velvet-I believe its appeal to the well-dressed kinky crowd can be summed up in

three words: Mommy, oh, mommy.

 

Venus in Furs-Wasn't this thing an underground selection a year or so ago? It's an act

of **** just to sit through this one, but it is named after Sacher-Masoch's best

known book, so it gets a very reluctant runway walk.

 

TCM Film Festival-My festival dream would be for the lights to go down, an Orson Welles'

like voice boom out in his most playful manner something along the lines of Ladies and gentlemen,

I am happy to report we have just finished a complete restoration of my original version of

The Magnificent Ambersons, which I am now pleased to present for the first time. Please

direct your attention to the screen. Thank you.

But in lieu of that:

 

Two movies that explore the subject of hero worship and how heroes are manufactured, one

in a gently satiric mode, the other in an all out cynical one. It's rather obvious why Hollywood

would find this theme of interest.

 

I think the rest of the schedule is pretty self-explanatory: some atrociously punned themes,

and some freestyle mix and match.

C Bogle-

Nice schedule--some fantatic cinema on that list. Especially Lifeboat, a great movie, but often overshadowed by Hitch's other works. I love "The Gay Deceivers" - every time I watch those movies I think, "Was it as obvious back then that these characters are supposed to be gay, or are we just more aware of it now?" And Rear Window is definitely essential. But I must say, having seen Kitten WIth a Whip, it belongs over in the Underground section (it's a pretty bad movie), but it fits the fashion theme anyway. :)

Really enjoy your schedule, C. Bogle. I'm all for more foreign films, and The Wages of Fear and Forbidden Games are among my all-time favorites. Would also enjoy seeing Viridiana, Return of the Secaucus 7, and The File on Thelma Jordan again. There's an eclectic trio! Would love to see The Clouded Yellow. James Mason for SOTM is an excellent choice.

 

I'm with you and LonesomePolecat on the "Gay Deceivers" theme, and may start a thread on the subject. More often that not, the writers, directors, and actors usually knew exactly what they were doing, and they could count on a sophisticated audience reading the coded reference and a general audience missing it completely. Hitchcock, of course, was anything but naive, and knew why actors like Farley Granger, John Dall, and Robert Walker were so perfect for those roles.

 

Let's hope some of C. Bogle's choices make their way onto the TCM schedule. I'd like to see Ghost Breakers because of the reference to it in Murder, He Says.

Impressive schedule, C.Bogle. I see at least one picture we duplicate (by the way, I will have my schedule up very early tomorrow morning).

 

Quick question, are there any theme subject headers not showing on your schedule? At least on my computer, I see a few blocks of film titles but no headers. Just wanted to make sure. (If you did have some that are not showing, it might be that some of your headers might be indented by one space, which makes the TCM computer produce a blank line.)

 

After I get my schedule posted tomorrow, I will have much more time to look at everyone else's schedule. I am looking forward to that!

Just got caught up with looking at everyone's schedules--the best part of the contest is seeing how everyone thinks and what they'd pick! Interesting schedules this year (as always).

 

Capuchin--I like the "going green" theme to introduce remakes-very clever! Frank McHugh is an interesting choice as SOTM--I always like to see character actors honored.

 

Sansfin--Love the "day" theme throughout! The 20th Century Vole bit is fun, too.

 

Lonesomepolecat--1961 was a pretty good year, movie-wise wasn't it? I like the evening of directors trying new things--interesting how well they did--those are some of my favorite movies!

 

Kingrat--Love the actor/director switch theme. And I've not seen many of the films you listed under your B&W Britain theme--they sound very interesting! Aaaand... Barbarella ! Woot!

 

C.Bogle--Wow. You sure start off with a bang, don't you? I like your German/American connection, too. If I do a schedule (which I probably won't) I was thinking about doing something with the creative folks who fled Hitler for Hollywood (maybe make it a monthly theme? IDK) Anyway, it's interesting. Also--shiny boots! and gay decievers! Love it.

C.Bogle - You have made a wonderful schedule. It is very eclectic. You choose many movies I do not know but those which I do know are all very good so I must think others are equal and I must see them. I very much like number of foreign films you use. The Henri-Georges Clouzot/Filmsonor films are two of my favorites.

Thanks for the feedback. I realize that TCM feels that foreign language films likely

won't bring in the audience that American classics do, and they do have to live

in the real world, something challenge schedulers don't, but it would still be nice

to see them show up in prime time more often.

 

I've always liked Lifeboat, especially the fact of all the characters in such a

confined space, including Willie, the secret pill-popping Nazi.

 

The question of how obvious or not the homosexuality of a character is in these

and other films is an interesting effect of the production code. Is he (it was usually

a male) or isn't he? I'm sure some folks did catch on and others probably didn't,

at least in the cases where the stereotypes weren't too obvious. I'm guessing at

the time it was the "sissy," effeminate stereotype that was the most well known to

audiences. These movies certainly are an intriguing gauge of how times have changed.

 

 

 

Kitten with a Whip would be a good underground selection too, but I couldn't

resist a title like that for the fashion theme.

 

Looking forward to your schedule, filmlover. If there are only one or two duplicates,

that's not too bad. I don't believe there are any missing themes. I put additional space

between the last film in a theme and the next "regular" film just to show where the theme

ended. That may clarify things.

 

Those two Clouzot films are among my favorites. I'm glad that TCM has shown both, giving

people a chance to see them.

_My Notes:_

 

To start out with, I wanted to start the schedule with a bit of fun, so I thought I would hopefully make people laugh at ?John Wayne Liked Boy Singers.?

 

For ?An English Rose Garden in America,? my original thought was to include people like Vivien Leigh, Maureen O?Hara, Glynis Johns, and others, but though they had their early success in England, they weren?t born there. All of the lovely ladies on my list were born in England?and I also chose the films where they appeared in American settings.

 

Ok, ?And Then I Interviewed?? is a takeoff on Sammy Cahn?s ?And Then I Wrote??. This is a vanity section for me, because I decided to fill up a bit of space with some of the stars I was lucky enough to have interviewed in the past.

 

For the Star of the Month, I was originally going to go with Dick Powell, but then I was watching the new Blu release of ?White Christmas? and suddenly thought Danny Kaye has never been SOTM and he deserves to be. I had ?The Court Jester? in my list (because how can you have Danny Kaye but not include ?The Court Jester??), but then I thought how much fun it would be to have it play at the Festival, and let all the people who have never seen it discover how funny it is.

 

My choice for the Fashions theme has a lot to do with clothes making the person (I decided to include Pretty Woman because there is a touching moment where she is trying to buy important clothes in a Rodeo Drive shop but?). When I read that Fashion was to be the theme for a night, I have to admit that one film came right to my mind, one where the design of the ?clothes? made a star overnight?Raquel Welch?s bikini-like cavewoman outfit in One Million Years B.C., so I knew I had to include it somehow.

 

I thought it would be fun to include all of the films mentioned in the lyrics of the opening song, ?Science Fiction/Double Feature,? of The Rocky Horror Picture Show:

 

Michael Rennie was ill the day the earth stood still

But he told us where we stand

And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear

Claude Rains was the invisible man

Then something went wrong for Fay Wray and King Kong

They got caught in a celluloid jam

And, finally, a note about the TCM Film Festival choices?THIS WAS HARD! Picking only two films??!!! I wanted to schedule a whole day because there are so many I would like to see shown with the stars in attendance. And it pained me having to let some go. One, in particular, Kiss Me Kate (the 3D version) which has played the Egyptian before. Actually, I thought I would include it, and for the remaining choice last night I watched both ?The Court Jester? and ?Mary Poppins? to decide between the two which one I would like to see. It was then I realized that Glynis Johns was in both, she?s still alive, and thus I have a common link between the two I can use.

things a lot easier for another go.

 

Fine schedule, filmlover. I like many of your themes, including bringing Rondo Hatton to

the foreground. Yes, there's nothing better than a pun only a mother could love.

filmlover - You have made a wonderful schedule. The themes are all very creative and many of them made me laugh. I like very much the movies for Michael Caine. It is deliciously wicked idea to have *Les diaboliques* followed by *How to Murder Your Wife*
