Does anyone have a complete list of the guest programmers who have been on TCM? I'm feeling like they are frequently men, as are the regular host. Where are the Ladies???

I recall this subject was brought up before - at least when it came to female hosts - but there have been female co-hosts. Rose McGowan was one. And there was a female critic (somebody help me, was it Pauline Kael?). But there are ony two regular hosts, Robert and Ben. So it isn't prejudice against female hosts, because with only two people there is a 50% chance it could be either sex. It just happens to be a male.

Hi EliseCD!

While I would have to agree that the scale is tipped towards male Guest Programmers, there have been numerous women sitting across from Robert Osborne. I think the last two women to appear as Guest Programmers were Cloris Leachman and Sally Field.

Sally Field's GP Stint -

Cloris Leachman's GP Stint -

But, prior to Alec Baldwin being co-host of the weekly The Essentials series, there were three women who appeared opposite RO every week - Rose McGowan, Molly Haskell and Carrie Fisher - to introduce the "essential" films.

For a more comprehensive look at the history of TCM's Guest Programmers, go to this TCM site -

and you'll find many more names and faces of women who have been introducing their favorite films on TCM. But I don't think there is a single, exhaustive list of every Guest Programmer that has appeared on the channel.

PS - Whoa! Was I off on who the last two women were who sat across from RO as Guest Programmers. They are Raquel Welch and Shirley Jones. Sorry!

Filmlover,

Not Pauline Kael, it was Molly Haskell as a co-host of *The Essentials*. Speaking of that, that would include Carrie Fisher as well.

Other female non-*Essentials* co-hosts have included:

Raquel Welch

Neko Case

Lorraine Bracco

Shirley Jones

Whoppi Goldberg

Martha Stewart

Cybil Shepard

Tracey Ullman

Cloris Leachman

Sally Field

Elaine Stritch

Thelma Schoonmaker

Thanks guys,

It looks more even than I would have thought. I still think they need a regular woman host though. I wonder if the programmers are evenly men and women?

Thanks again for all the info.

Out of curiousity, why? I am not looking to start any arguments, I'd just like to know your reason for it? If there are two positions available, no matter what the sex, the best people should occupy them. You wouldn't want someone who wasn't as qualified, just for the sake of having a female host, would you? Or is it so you have someone to identify with? Just curious.

It's just a different perspective. Women have a interesting history in film and it would be good to have a woman on the channel to comment and draw focus.

IMHO

the most important qualification is that they be intelligent and knowledgable about film....I don't care if the host is male or female, but I wouldn't want to see a young, attractive 20something woman who knows nothing about the films that are showing if someone more knowledgable was available...

I don't know why you assume there isn't a women as knowledgible about film. I'm not talking about eye candy. I'm talking about a film historian who could bring a women's perspective. I'm sure there are multiple candidates.

Molly Haskell did a turn with Robert Osborne as a co-host of *The Essentials*. Despite being relaxed and informative in countless documentaries, her stint on the *Essentials* seemed like she was very uncomfortable.

I would love to see Jeanine Basinger as a Guest Programmer or host.
