I am so grateful that I was able to meet Golden-Globe-winning, Oscar-nominated Director Richard Linklater on the set of his latest movie, That's What I'm Talking About. He chose Fanny and Alexander, Some Came Running, and The Asphast Jungle when he was a TCM Guest Programmer in September. He took a few moments to visit with me about his appearance and discuss his passion for classic films.

Boyhood has six nominations: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress-Patricia Arquette, Best Supporting Actor-Ethan Hawke, Best Editing-Sandra Adair, and Best Picture, all well-deserved in my opinion. :D

Linklater discusses Some Came Running on TCM's Youtube channel:

UPDATE FROM THE TURNER PRESSROOM!

imagejpg1_zps070c2183.jpg

Both Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer will be in attendance!

Hollywood will come alive with The Sound of Music (1965) this spring as the beloved, Oscar®-winning classic returns to the big screen to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a gala opening-night screening on Thursday, March 26 at the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival. Legendary stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer will join Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne at the world-famous TCL Chinese Theater IMAX to introduce the beautifully restored film and kick off the sixth annual festival, which will run March 26-29, 2015, in Hollywood. The film is being presented in collaboration with Twentieth Century Fox, in celebration of their Golden 50th Anniversary Blu-ray release arriving on March 10, 2015. TCM has also announced that Delta Air Lines is returning once again as the festival's exclusive Founding Partner. The official airline partner of the TCM Classic Film Festival, Delta has provided air travel for many of the festival's VIP guests every year since the festival began.

The Sound of Music is the story of the Von Trapp family, whose lives are forever changed by the arrival of Maria, the warmhearted young governess who brings joy and music to the Captain (Plummer) and his children. The film earned Andrews her second consecutive Oscar nomination after having won the previous year for her performance in Mary Poppins (1964). Additional information about The Sound of Music and its leading lady is included below.

The TCM Classic Film Festival's screening of The Sound of Music will mark the second year in a row that a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical has opened the week's festivities. Last year, the duo's groundbreaking Oklahoma! (1955) launched the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival, with Shirley Jones attending.

The Sound of Music joins a growing list of restored classics being showcased at the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival. TCM previously announced that the festival will feature restored versions of Ron Howard's Apollo 13 (1995), William Dieterle's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) and Charles Reisner and Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928). The Keaton comedy will also be accompanied by legendary silent film composer Carl Davis conducting the world premiere performance of his new score for the film.

Passes for the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival are on sale now and can be purchased exclusively through the official festival website: www.tcm.com/festival. Additional screenings and events will be announced over the coming months.

OPENING NIGHT GALA – THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965)

Andrews & Plummer50th anniversary celebration presented in collaboration with Twentieth Century Fox – Featuring a live appearance by Julie Andrews & Christopher Plummer!

Robert Wise's sumptuous, Oscar®-winning adaptation of Rogers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music is one of the most beloved musicals of all time and one of the genre's biggest box office hits. It is the story of Maria, a spirited young woman who leaves a convent and becomes a governess to seven unruly children. Her charm and songs soon win the hearts of the children and their father but when Nazi Germany unites with Austria, Maria is forced to attempt a daring escape with her new family.

Also starring with Andrews and Plummer in The Sound of Music are Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn and Peggy Wood, along with Charmian Carr, Nicholas Hammond, Heather Menzies, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner and Kym Karath as the von Trapp children.

The Sound of Music is packed with musical delights, from the stunning and iconic mountaintop opening title song to the infectious joy as Maria and the children sing "Do-Re-Mi" while canvassing the spectacular Austrian countryside. Other unforgettable songs in the film include "My Favorite Things," "Edelweiss" "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," to name a few.

The Sound of Music topped the box office in 1965 and continues to rank as one of the most popular films of all time. The film earned 10 Oscar nominations, winning for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound, Best Film Editing and Best Adapted Score.

TCMFF TRIVIA: Julie Andrews first appeared at he 2011 TCM Film Festival to introduce husband Blake Edwards' "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

TCMFF 2015: UPDATE!

image.jpg1_zpsfbachlcu.jpg

"Turner Classic Movies is bringing its restoration of “lost” Harry Houdini classic The Grim Game to have its world-premiere screening at its TCM Classic Film Festival in March.

This much-sought-after 1919 film – a complete print of which only recently was brought to TCM for restoration – features the escape artist and legendary illusionist in one of his few starring roles. The film was discovered and the restoration was produced and restored by film preservationist Rick Schmidlin, whose credits include such restorations as The Dickson Experimental Sound Film (1894/95), Greed (1924), London After Midnight (1927), Touch Of Evil (1958) and Elvis: That’s The Way It Is – Special Edition (1970)."

Here's a link to the full article concerning the fabulous restoration of a 1919 Harry Houdini film, "The Grim Game," to screen at this year's festival:

UPDATE: It's Sophia Loren!

TCM (Turner Classic Movies) today announced Academy Award®-winning actress Sophia Loren (Two Women) is set to attend the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival, taking place in Hollywood March 26-29 for a sit-down interview with TCM host Robert Osborne about her life and extraordinary career. In addition to the interview, Loren will be on-hand to introduce a screening of Marriage Italian Style (1964), for which she received an Oscar® nomination for Best Actress. Loren is also a recipient of an Honorary Career Achievement Academy Award®. The interview will be taped Saturday, March 28, in front of a live audience of festival passholders at the The Ricardo Montalbán Theatre. The interview will then air on TCM in spring 2016 as the original special Sophia Loren: Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival.

"For more than six decades, Sophia Loren has been an enchanting force of nature on movie screens across the globe," said Osborne. “She is one of the great beauties and magical leading ladies of film. It’s going to be a great treat to learn from her first hand about her life as a film star and the people she’s worked with such as Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Marcello Mastroianni and Daniel Day Lewis while also earning an Academy Award® for her performance in Two Women.”

Each year, the TCM Classic Film Festival features an extended interview taped in front of a live audience for telecast on TCM under the Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival banner. In 2010, the first TCM Classic Film Festival welcomed two-time Oscar® winner Luise Rainer, who was 100 at the time. In 2011, Peter O'Toole was the featured guest, followed in 2012 by Osborne's interview with actress Kim Novak. In 2013, Osborne sat down with Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint, and last year, Academy Award®-winner Alan Arkin was featured.

Loren joins an already exciting roster at this year’s festival, including previously announced appearances by Ann-Margret for a screening of The Cincinnati Kid (1973) and former astronaut Captain James Lovell for the 20th anniversary world premiere restoration of Apollo 13 (1995). Academy Award®-winners Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer are confirmed to walk the red carpet for the festival’s opening night 50th Anniversary gala presentation of The Sound of Music (1965).
