Zorro and Don Juan - A Great Swashbuckling Double Bill

338 posts in this topic

Even in his 80s, Smith was a very impressive figure of a man. Those patrician features, considerable height and that brow - they seemed immune to time's effects. At 82 he was the titular SCOTLAND YARD INVESTIGATOR for Republic and was still imposing while facing off against Erich von Stroheim.

Now there's a film that TCM should dig up.

Darn it! I didn't see your post last night before I watched this The Adventures of Robin Hood for the zillionth time!

Now we know why film editor Ralph Dawson won the Academy Award that year for Robin Hood. Without his assistance Sir Guy might have been dispatched a lot sooner. And to think that Basil Rathbone always claimed he was a superior fencer to Errol Flynn. ;)

Except you are now among the fortunate minority that can floor other Robin Hood fans when you astound them with this observation. They will observe you with awe. Their admiration will be boundless. They may even give you money. And one day when Robert Osborne mentions this fact while introducing Robin Hood, you will know that TCM staffers read this thread.

*jamesjazzguitar wrote: As for Rupert, what about one of your favorites, Flynn? Do you think he could of pulled off that type of role?*

James, I guess it would depend upon at what stage of his career that Flynn would have attempted a part such as Rupert. But based upon his performance as a charming manipulator in Uncertain Glory, I think that Flynn could not only have pulled it off but would have relished the opportunity to play a scoundrel.

I don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread or not? Douglas Faribanks Sr. literally invented THE MARK OF ZORRO. It was all his idea. There is no mention in the story "The Curse of Capistrano" on which the film was based on the mark of the Z for Zorro. Doug came up with the idea all on his own. And it has been a staple of all other Zorro films and TV shows ever since.

The best version of THE MARK OF ZORRO (1920) on DVD is the one found in the Flicker Alley Early Box set A MODERN MUSKETEER. The stunning tinted print transfer from the original camera negative looks like it was filmed just last week. This is the version that TCM has been running for the past several years. If you don't want to pay for the complete box set you can get virtually the same version on DVD alone on the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra website, at montalto.com. Although the box set is excellent with several other good Fairbanks features. Including A MODERN MUSKETEER and WILD AND WOLLY.

The literal translation (in English) is: To each his taste.

I understand it has two translations; one English-French and one French. It also has two French versions: "A chacun son gout" and "Chacun a son gout."

“Everyone has (a+ ) his taste”; or, “Everyone to (à) his taste.” The former is French, the latter is English-French. The phrase is much more common with us than it is in France, where we meet with the phrases —Chacun a sa chacunerie (everyone has his idiosyncrasy), and chacun a sa marotte (everyone has his hobby). In Latin sua cuique voluptas,+ “as the good-man said when he kissed his cow.” My mother used to end it with "as the old lady said when she kissed the cow." Cow-kissing seems to be closely associated with it.

Of course it's the title of a famous aria in J. Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus. Originally in German, no matter what language the opera/aria are sung in, the line Chacun a son gout is always sung in French.

gagman, I'm very interested in your statement because my knowledge of McCulley's serialized version of Zorro is next to nil. I gather, though, that you are stating that the actual title "Mark of Zorro" was Fairbanks' invention (I believe I've read that the actor did some of his own screenwriting under aliases).

If you go to the following link:

http://thenostalgialeague.com/olmag/mcculley-index.html

it states that McCulley's 1919 Zorro serial would have died after the first chapter if it had not been for the success of the Fairbanks movie when it was released the following year. That, in turn, lead to further Zorro chapters for McCulley. Therefore, without the interest of Fairbanks in McCulley's initial chapter that appeared in All-Story Weekly, the character of Zorro, invented by McCulley, would probably have died. Fairbanks' film helped to keep Zorro alive and prospering for McCulley (and Hollywood) for years to come. In fact, the film world, as we all know, continues to revive the masked avenger.

Speaking of masked, according to Wikipedia, it was Fairbanks that invented the idea of the black hat and mask for Zorro which McCulley, in turn, then picked up upon for his subsequent Zorro chapters. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnston_McCulley).

Fascinating stuff. At least, for me. I love finding out bits of information like this because I tend to be a trivia freak.

I gather by your statement, gagman, that, along with the well known title, it was Fairbanks, not McCulley, that invented the idea of the character carving the letter "Z" on buildings and unfortunate opponents. Is that correct?

The entire McCulley serial is available at the above link. However, call me lazy, I didn't feel inclined to try to go through it in order to find out.

I want to thank you for bringing this information to the thread because it was certainly news to me. If you, gagman, or anyone else has any further nuggets of information like this, I hope you will feel inclined to make a contribution.

What I am saying is that the idea, the concept of the hero making the Z with his sword and the Whip. Leaving the mark on his assailants was all Fairbanks idea. The only thing that was in the Zorro stories was something called the "sign of the Fox". No physical mark of Zorro. Most people who have made Zorro films since probably are not aware of this?

Yes, Doug wrote allot of his own story's under assumed names. For instance Elton Thomas, which were his two middle names.

Thanks gagman. So the mark of Zorro was really the mark of Fairbanks. Interesting.

Speaking earlier here of how good Doug Jr. was as Rupert in "Zenda", I wonder what your opinion is of James Mason in the same role in the Technicolor remake, Tom.

I'm going to guess you think he lacked the athleticism, but had the sneeringly snide aspect of the character down cold, eh?

Good list, but I must add one of my favorites - *Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N.* 1951, directed by Raoul Walsh, starring Gregory Peck, and Virginia Mayo.

Wow Tom, thanks for all of that. I'll try to get back with some info on a few others, but today is a hectic day. I'm attending the "24th Annual Super Bowl Party for Those Who Don't Care About the Super Bowl" and it's a 2-hour schlep to get there.

But it's worth it to see a bunch of former co-workers, most of whom go back to working together since 1981. In the meantime, I'm compiling some music for the occasion.

We do put the game on, but as we're all from the broadcast industry and spent time writing sales pieces to sell TV time to sponsors, we just pay attention to the commercials, if that much.

Tom,

Great list, and awesome descriptions as always, but quite a few are missing. But I won't quibble, and definitely not be "concerned" about what your slant is and what you left out, and have the threat of the thread derail agqain.

Arturo, thanks for the comments. There are, indeed, a few other titles that could have been included but I guess I was capable of doing a list like that that is only so long. One of the problems for me in such a long posting was that I was getting tired. Therefore, for example, I cut out Flame and the Arrow, which I was going to include, because I knew that Crimson Pirate would make the list anyway, so good ol' Burt Lancaster was not going to be ignored.

Minor efforts, though, like Against All Flags or The Black Knight, for example, I didn't consider to be significant enough to really warrant inclusion. It's a personal call. By no means was this list supposed to be all-inclusive. I was trying, though, to select the swashbucklers I considered to be, if not landmark, at least noteworthy.

I do believe, however, that I've included all of the great talkie swashbucklers. Then, again, some others may consider some films to be swashbucklers that are, from my perspective, at least, swashbucklers in spirit (ie. 1943's Ali Baba and the 40 Theives, a fun film, to be sure, or Ty Power's Son of Fury). Though, to be honest, when I created my silent swashbuckler list I did include a couple of "swashbucklers in spirit" so I guess I'm not being entirely consistent.

Please feel free, though, to make any suggestions of additions that you consider to be valid, as did Valentine with Captain Horacio Hornblower, a film I quite like, by the way. I have great respect for your expertise.

Dargo, I think your assessment of James Mason's Rupert is a pretty good one. He certainly had the charm and sardonic wit but, unlike Stewart Granger in that Zenda remake, Mason was no kind of a swashbuckler. The final duel is hurt by that fact, not unlike the damage that Henry Daniell's casting had done to the otherwise great Sea Hawk.

Olivia de Havilland as a lovely, intelligent Maid Marian, sharing a fairy tale screen chemistry with her leading man;

Wonderful reviews of wonderful films, Tom, as always. This quote got my attention at once, since Olivia has made it very clear on many occasions that she was really in love with Flynn at the time. She said she resented his bringing his wife to the set when they were doing the balcony scene, to the point where, to punish him, she flubbed her lines deliberately over and over, in order to kiss him so much that he, in her words, "had trouble with his tights." She felt he had some nerve bringing his wife over, since he'd been indicating that he loved her (Olivia), and NOT Lili, just prior to that.

My own opinion is that she never stopped loving him. I remember her saying on a Donahue show that when she heard of his death she couldn't stop crying for two days. I felt it must be her misfortune to have fallen in love with him at such an early age. She still talks about him with such love.

Awwwww, that's so sad.

If I were wearing makeup right now, it'd be a mess!

I knew about the crush (probably from one of the special features on the AoRH DVD), but I never knew about the wifey part (or investigated it) :(

Of course it's the title of a famous aria in J. Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus. Originally in German, no matter what language the opera/aria are sung in, the line Chacun a son gout is always sung in French.

Thanks, Swithin. Funny you should include the Die Fledermaus clip, since I just saw the operetta in October, in Honolulu. My friend tenor Richard Troxell sang the role of Eisenstein. Beautifully, as always. His is an exceptional voice and a great stage presence.

His Pinkerton in the Frederic Mitterand film "Madame Butterfly" is perfect. When it was released it was given Two Thumbs Up by Siskel and Ebert. It's a lovely, beautifully photographed movie with glorious music. No one should miss it. It's on Netflix, so no one has to.

"Butterfly" has become his live signature opera since he made the picture.

Dothery, thanks for your contribution. I wouldn't know if Olivia still loves Flynn but the man had a huge impact on her. Yes, she moved on with marriage to another man and moved to Paris, where she still resides in a townhouse.

However, in an interview a couple of years ago Olivia said that she was re-reading Flynn's autobiography, My Wicked Wicked Ways, saying that she was underlining passages in it. Flynn was a complex, contradictory personality in many ways and I think that, over a half century after his death, his most famous leading lady is still having problems completely understanding him.

My point being, that after all this time, the lady still wants to understand him. Yes, Errol certainly left his mark on her.
