Summer Under the Stars

69 posts in this topic

Of the ones who have never been honored for SUTS, I'd like to see Dorothy Lamour, Annette Funicello, James MacArthur (I know he was primarily a TV star, but he did a number of Disney films in his kid star days),  Louis Jourdan, Rod Taylor,  Robert Young,  Anthony Perkins, and especially Robert Vaughn. What they did to Robert Vaughn at the Oscars was horrible, and many people on these boards (myself included) were upset.

Of the ones who haven't been honored in a long time, I'd like to see Ann Sheridan, Ava Gardner, Gloria Grahame, Donna Reed, Ida Lupino, Dana Andrews, Peter Lawford, Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, Tyrone Power, Burt Lancaster, and Gregory Peck.

I'd like to see:

Ida Lupino, Ann Sheridan, Sandra Dee, Eve Arden, Mary Astor, Joan Bennett, Ronald Colman, Tony Curtis, Richard Widmark, Joan Blondell, Gloria Grahame, Rita Hayworth, Carole Lombard, Robert Mitchum, Eleanor Parker, Eleanor Powell, Claude Rains, Ginger Rogers, Rosalind Russell...

That's a pretty good list to start with.

Keep it simple.  No one who has been "honored" in past five years should be eligible.

DAVID JANSSEN (1931-1980) could have a SUTS Day.  I think he deserves a SUTS Day.  There's no shortage of films to pick from, either, as Janssen was a workaholic.

The first post on this thread failed to include the 2016 lineup, so here it is in case anyone doesn't remember.

EDWARD G. ROBINSON, LUCILLE BALL, BING CROSBY, FAY WRAY, KARL MALDEN, MONTGOMERY CLIFT, JEAN HARLOW, ESTHER WILLIAMS, TIM HOLT, HEDY LAMARR, SPENCER TRACY, JANET GAYNOR, RALPH RICHARDSON, CYD CHARISSE, RODDY MCDOWALL, ANNE BAXTER, JAMES EDWARDS, ANGIE DICKINSON, RUBY KEELER, HUMPHREY BOGART, BETTE DAVIS, ROBERT MONTGOMERY, BRIGITTE BARDOT, CONSTANCE CUMMINGS, VAN JOHNSON, BORIS KARLOFF, JAMES GARNER, JEAN ARTHUR, CHARLES BOYER, JEAN SIMMONS, DEAN MARTIN

Hopefully when the 2017 lineup is announced, someone else or myself will also post it on this thread for reference.

Since Ronald Colman was just announced as July's SOTM, the SUTS lineup should be announced next month. (Where has the time gone?)

As I mentioned before, I really want to see Robert Vaughn honored this year. What they did to Robert Vaughn at the Oscars was horrible, and many people on these boards (myself included) were upset.

TCM should show his most famous films (The Magnificent Seven and Bullitt) and his Oscar nominated film (The Young Philadelphians). If TCM honors Vaughn this year, the Oscars will (hopefully) take notice and realize what a huge mistake they made.

A George O'Brien day would be wonderful. Sunrise and Iron Horse have been cleaned up and put on blu-ray. Plenty of his "B westerns" are available. And there are still some silents and early talkies of his that are rarely seen.

Often films that have been put on blu-ray are more difficult for TCM to obtain at a reasonable cost.    I.e. the company that paid to put them on blu-ray wants to sell them before allowing a station like TCM to show them for 'free'.

That's not always the case. In fact, companies will often allow one or two showings as a form of advertisement. This is especially true for older films that aren't in the public consciousness.

Correct;   If there is a 'block out' period,   often it is after some initial public showings and until the point-to-point sales stream is running dry.

I think George O'Brien would be a great choice. Howev3r, many of his films were at Fox, so many may not be available.

I would be great to see Glynis Johns or Kay Kendall get a day devoted to them. Kay did quite a few British films before hitting it big and her brief star period.

Also Joan Bennett and a few probably impossibles, Alice Faye, Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth.

I am sure Bennett and Hayworth have been honored in the past, but both would be good choices to be So again. As for Faye and Grable, most of the films of their starring years were at Fox. However, SUTS usually has at least one person each year that did the bulk of their films at Fox. So either could conceivably be selected.

Betty Grable made many films in the 30s before being at Fox, but many were made at Paramount, where she was under contract for awhile. Unfortunately, Paramount films are also scarce on TCM.

Glynis  Johns or  Kay Kendall would have made excellent choices, imho.  However, this year the safest bets were chosen.  Maybe next year....sigh....
