war

An English village is occupied by disguised German paratroopers as an advance post for a planned invasion.

Dir[Alberto] Cavalcanti

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Alberto Cavalcanti. Cast: Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Allan, Frank Lawton, Mervyn Johns, Basil Sydney, David Farrar, Marie Lohr, C.V. France, Thora Hird.

"Wartime melodrama laced with humor about Germans invading a rural British community. Too sly and well written to be dismissed as mere propaganda; a most intriguing time capsule. Screenplay by John Dighton, Angus MacPhail, and Diana Morgan from a Graham Greene story. And remember: this story, told as a flashback at the end of WW2, was actually made at its peak, when the outcome was far from certain."

Ooooh, it's much more than that. I highly recommend this movie, especially if you're Italian (you will appreciate the shouting more) and like to overeat.

Thanks for the heads up.

It is amazing to think that A Nous La Libertie has never aired before.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that it has.  It was on the schedule for June 7, 2010.  I can't say for sure that it was broadcast on that date, but I have a recording of the movie, and I don't know where I would have gotten it, if not from TCM.

Yes, I know for sure that TCM has shown A Nous La Libertie because I watched it. It was the import that night, several months ago but not more than a year. It was followed by Le Million then, just like it is today.

Good memory.  The TCM schedule listed it for 2:15 AM on Sunday, June 6, 2010, which means that it really played on June 7th.

Tonight for Pirate Pictures

8:00 pm ET
C- 84 min
adventure

A British officer must face off against the pirates of Madagascar.

DirGeorge Sherman CastErrol Flynn , Maureen O'Hara , Anthony Quinn .

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: George Sherman. Errol Flynn, Maureen O'Hara, Anthony Quinn, Mildred Natwick.

"Flynn found his forte again as dashing British soldier who maneuvers way into pirate fortress, while managing to flirt with O'Hara. Although not Flynn's final swashbuckler, this was his last good entry in that genre. Remade as THE KING'S PIRATE.

Is DOLL FACE really a TCM premiere? It is not indicated that way on the schedule. I am not saying I doubt you-- but just wondering why the schedule would not reflect it.

This is a fun film, though Carmen Miranda has been in better vehicles. Perry Como's singing is always a treat, and Vivian Blaine is usually excellent.

For those who haven't seen DOLL FACE before, check it out!

Tonight 6-24, under British Oddities (with American Stars):

8:00 pm ET
79 min
comedy

A visiting American engages in a bold business promotion, the likes of which the British have not seen.

DirMarion Gering CastEdward G. Robinson , Luli Deste , Nigel Bruce .

LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Marion Gering. Edward G. Robinson, Luli Deste, Nigel Bruce, Constance Collier, Ralph Richardson, Arthur Wontner.

"Amusing film about a go-getting American promoter who visits England and gambles on a long shot: hitherto unknown mineral known as Magnelite, which he proceeds to "ballyhoo.'' Tailor-made for an ebullient Robinson."

11:30 pm ET
88 min
adventure

A British District Officer in Nigeria fights against gun-runners and slavers with the aid of a loyal native chief.

DirZoltan Korda CastPaul Robeson , Leslie Banks , Nina Mae McKinney .
LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Zoltan Korda. Paul Robeson, Leslie Banks, Nina Mae McKinney, Robert Cochran, Martin Walker.

"Dated adventure story (by Edgar Wallace) about river patrol officer maintains interest today, particularly for Robeson's strong presence and African location shooting. A fascinating relic of the sun-never-sets school of British imperialism. Sanders character revived in 1960s' SANDERS (DEATH DRUMS ALONG THE RIVER) and COAST OF SKELETONS."

D: Mitchell Leisen. Jack Benny, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Bob Burns, Martha Raye, Shirley Ross, Ray Milland, Frank Forest. "Almost unbearable musical about the competition between small-town discovery Ross and egocentric radio star Forest. Manages to waste the talent of its formidable cast, plus guest stars Benny Goodman, Larry Adler, Benny Fields, and Leopold Stokowski! "

I am looking forward to Sentimental Journey

as I remember, Forbidden Street has a pretty good story too & "As Henry, Andrews is overdubbed with a distinctive English accent (no credit is given), while his familiar voice returns as the amiable Gilbert. O'Hara, meanwhile, slips from a cultured, educated English accent to cockney as she remains in The Mews"
