Down by Law (1986)

AKA: Bajo el peso de la ley

Synopsis: A pair of petty thieves and losers end up in jail with an Italian tourist. In a strange twist of luck, the three manage to escape and wonder what to do next.
DirJim Jarmusch CastTom Waits , John Lurie , Roberto Benigni .

".... On the surface, it's grim and relentless, but there's a thread of humor running through everything, and that takes the curse off. We are never quite sure that Jarmusch intends us to take anything seriously, and there are times when the actors seem to be smiling to themselves as they growl through their lines. ... it's a good movie, and the more you know about movies, the more you're likely to like it. I'm looking forward to DOWN BY LAW. I know many folks on this forum don't care for Roberto Benigni (maybe not lovely Nicoletta Braschi, too), but I like their films.

I married an Italian the same year Life is Beautiful came out.   She was a big fan of Benigni \ Braschi.   So of course we went and saw Life is Beautiful and then rented many of their (or just Benigni's), Italian films (with subtitles for me).

I exposed her to Cary Grant (now her dream man,,,, well after me!),  and Bette Davis.   It was a nice cultural exchange.

(Oh, and I should add that her dream couple is William Powell and Myrna Loy.  In fact to this day she still asks me,  'are you sure they weren't ever married?'!).

Stealing Home ( 1988)

An aging baseball player returns to his hometown after the suicide of a childhood friend.

Dir Steven Kampmann Cast Mark Harmon , Blair Brown , Jodie Foster .

C- 98 mins, CC,

"Stealing Home" is a real squirmer, a movie so earnest and sincere and pathetic and dripping with pathos that it cries out to be satirized. The only way to save this movie would be a new soundtrack with savagely cynical dialogue over the sappy images. ...

? Jean Negulesco. Irene Dunne, Alec Guinness, Finlay Currie, Anthony Steel, Andrew Ray, Beatrice Campbell, Wilfrid Hyde-White.

"Offbeat drama of Queen Victoria (Dunne), a recluse since her husband's death, coming back to reality after meeting waif who stole into her castle. Dunne does quite well as Queen, with Guinness a joy as Disraeli. Filmed in England."
