Where is the "Upcoming Classic 20th Century Fox films" thread?

336 posts in this topic

I've tried to watch THE BLUE MAX on the free FXM On Demand channel and got letterboxed edition that was also windowboxed. The image was only eating up about a fourth of my screen's real estate. The zoom button on the cable remote got it slightly larger, but it still had black bars all around. So, I used my TV's remote and voila - it looked like a Cinemascope movie should look, only that by blowing it up to fit my screen, I'm now suffering from a loss of resolution.

I tried to watch it a few days later on the regular FXM channel and it ended up being aired in pan-and-scan.

What a waste, I can't see me spending much time with this channel as the new listings don't indicate the format any more.

It sucks that the channel does so poorly with the classic.20th Century Fox. With so few movies in rotation, you would think they could woro on gdtting the dimensions right.

Arturo, when was the last time that the FMC (or whatever they're calling it these days) has shown a movie that they haven't already played a gazillion times before?  I first went to that channel for the Fox films that TCM couldn't get,* but I don't think I've seen a "new" one  for a good 3 or 4 years.   Not to mention that they haven't played some of their best ones, like Thieves' Highway, for even longer than that.  I recorded that classic in May of 2010 and that was the last time they played it.

*Some of which, like Laura and All About Eve, they've since been able to lease

Looking at Arturo's more recent posts, I would say the 'newer' ones are ON THE SUNNY SIDE, FOUR MEN AND A PRAYER, BLUE DENIM and THE SHOCKING MISS PILGRIM. So every two months or so, they add three or four new drops into the bucket. If you check back in six months, there will be a few more 'newer' ones. You have to be patient with the way they are exhibiting their classic library. At least they are still broadcasting and at least during those hours when they show classics, it is still commercial free.

Andy,

Topbilled.is right.....the channel gradually works in a few.titles, which, will then,.unfortunately, get played endlessly for six months or more. This coming week, another new one, KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES (1953), will.be shown. This was Tyrone.Power's first.Cinemascope epic for the studio. But I agree that it is frustrating that the station plays endlessly a few titles, while it sits on the vast majority of its classic titles.

They do at times pull out a movie and only show it once and then bury it again. The Towering Inferno and French Connection 2 were only shown briefly and then never have come back.

Almost all the movies though are repeated endlessly, almost as though they hope they get a different ending. Had FOX taken over TCM the same wizards that do this channel would have probably been brought on as TCM gurus to "fix things", lol.

Well, they keep running THE BLUE MAX and I've given up hope of seeing the film again in the proper aspect ratio. Then there's the FXM Retro portion of my Time Warner Free Movies On Demand channel. Even 4:3 ratio movies are shown in windowboxed form. What a waste.

Arturo, thanks as always for pointing out films that I would have otherwise missed. I've been waiting for Molly and Me, my favorite of the two Gracie Fields/Monty Wooley films. It's a very engaging, good-natured film with a great cast, including the very young Roddy McDowall as well as a hilarious performance by Natalie Schaefer.

I had high hopes when I saw that your list included Champagne Charlie, but it's not the 1944 film about Leybourne and Vance, who wrote the music hall song; it's an earlier, unrelated film, which doesn't sound that interesting.

You're welcome.Swithin. I admit it is frustrating to see the same movies played constantly on FMC, and then seeing that when Fox rotates in some new titles, which then will.get played endlessly for the better part of a year. As long as the TCM Retro portion of that channel shows their studio classics, commercial free, I will try to keep abreast of the schedule on this thread.

This remake of the classic silent had been intended as a vehicle to reteam Fonda with the costar of his first film, Janet Gaynor, then Queen.of the Lot at Fox Films. But in the interim, Fox.merged with 20th Century, and new studio head Darryl F Zanuck did not care for Gaynor, nor think she had much mileage left.as a Boxoffice attraction. So films planned for her.we're reassigned to others; WAY DOWN EAST was given to promising starlet Rochelle Hudson, and Barbara Stanwyck was borrowed for BANJO ON MY KNEE. When Gaynor finally made her first film at the merged 20th Century Fox, Zanuck made sure she wasn't the main attraction, and was.just one of four female leads, in the comedy of goldigging LADIES IN LOVE.

Thanks Arturo. I read that Gaynor had started WAY DOWN EAST but was injured and taken off the film. Not true?

Thanks Arturo. I read that Gaynor had started WAY DOWN EAST but was injured and taken off the film. Not true?

She either started.it,.or was about to start it,.when she may or.may not have gotten injured. The injury was given as the reason she didn't do it, but the real.reason seems to have been Zanuck not caring for her personally; he ensured she left the studio within a year or so.

Was Zanuck still at the studio when Gaynor was invited back to do BERNARDINE in the 50s? Maybe they had formed a mutual admiration society by that point!
