I noticed that FXM is showing Raiders From Beneath the Sea again.  This is during their 3:00 AM till 3:00 PM time frame where they tend to show older movies without commercials.  Not a lot of variety, but some interesting ones periodically.

Raiders sounds like a SciFi or war movie, but it is a crime movie.  Merry Anders is the chief attraction.  But the premise is sort of interesting, if somewhat far fetched.

SPOILER:  They rob a bank on Catalina Island by swimming under water with scuba gear to get there and escape.

Starz Western channel used to show Gene Autry movies at Noon on Sundays.  Always enjoyed them, but they rarely show any Autry movies any more.  I'll watch some of the new ones, but somehow just not as entertaining-and I don't mean the singing.  Right now they are big on Hopalong Cassidy movies and TV series in mornings.

Yes there are quite a few of the restored Hopalong Cassidy movies on Starz. I'd never seen them before. Some are quite entertaining.

Anyone who enjoys great performances should enjoy "Pygmalion" with Wendy Hiller. Thanks for the update, TB!

I didn't realize 1935 was such a busy year for Basil Rathbone. He was in several noteworthy classics in '35.

You're welcome, CG!

A few more TCM could air include THE SECOND FACE (1950) with Ella Raines; SECONDS (1966) with Rock Hudson; and ASH WEDNESDAY (1973) with Liz Taylor.

Great selection of films.

Especially looking forward to THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. I am so glad that at the end (SPOILER) Tracy chose her soulmate Dexter over dull George and likable if opinionated reporter Mike Connor.

Yes if the movie had ended any other way, it would have been a letdown.

To Top, in your own humble viewpoint, how do you think it stacks up vs other classic 1940's fare, such as GRAPES OF WRATH, *REBECCA, PINOCCHIO. GREAT DICTATOR, HIS GIRL FRIDAY & others released that year, plus, I always loved *Ford's magnificent LONG VIYAGE HOIME-(which was reportedly Eugene 0'Neill's own favorite of all his adaptations & even owned a print of it)

Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking how THE PHILADELPHIA STORY rates against the other big films of 1940? Sort of like apples and oranges. You can't really compare a sparkling MGM romantic comedy with a Fox adaptation of a John Steinbeck work. Aside from the fact they were both released in 1940, they have very little in common. So to compare them in any way would seem difficult and unfair. Fans can enjoy them both on their own separate terms. It doesn't have to be Film A versus Film B.
