TCM Primetime Themes

122 posts in this topic

Yes, but.....................the theme of the first SoD June 5th was San Francisco.

What do you think is the theme of SoD June 12th?  :D

I honestly do not know. Looks like gangsters, but that is too general I think.

By the way, for anyone wondering--I am not posting the August themes in this thread, because the themes are really the different stars getting feted each day. That information is available in the SUTS thread in the TCM Programs area, where I have already posted it in detail.

Top Billed I am definitely looking forward to the Charles Coburn and Cameron Menzies focus.  Charles is one of my favourites and I don't even consider him a "character" because he provides so much impetus to the films he is in...you just cannot ignore hime.   He and James Gleason stand out as "star" character actors to me.

They certainly do, Emily. It's the reason Coburn had a Summer Under the Stars tribute a few years ago.

Speaking of Coburn, check him out as an inspector in LURED (with George Sanders & Lucille Ball) as well as the noir classic IMPACT (with Brian Donlevy & Helen Walker). He's wonderful in both those films, because he is very much a part of the plot...and what he does has direct bearing on the main story. He's definitely more than just a character given amusing bits.

Quick FYI--

I will not post any primetime themes for February 2016, since every evening is devoted to 31 Days of Oscar (and that is self-explanatory).

According to poster Barton_Keyes, who made this statement in an Oscar thread:

"I have it on good authority that the (overall) theme for 31 Days of Oscar 2016 is called 360 Degrees of Hermione Gingold. Ms. Gingold is featured in both the first and the last films on the festival's schedule."

Oh, the 100th birthday of Glenn Ford.

Maybe I can get up to 100% seen of Glenn Ford's big screen movies this year.

I am going to sound outspoken, forgive me, but personally I was disappointed in the two films they chose to honor Ford on his 100th. They picked titles where he is second fiddle and in the shadows of a larger than life female costar (Rita Hayworth in GILDA and Bette Davis in A STOLEN LIFE).

When Glenn Ford was transitioning to television in the early 1970s, the president of CBS insisted he do a western-type show because his western movies were doing very well in the ratings when they were rerun on TV and they were popular at film festivals.

Since westerns are more his legacy, they should have picked at least one western, or something like BLACKBOARD JUNGLE where he's the main star, not overshadowed by a dominant female costar.

This feels like they are honoring Rita Hayworth and Bette Davis instead of Glenn Ford.

Yes, I was going to mention that I am truly shocked by you being so "outspoken", TopBilled as it is so unlike you!

Really now, this is like David Niven apologizing for being churly!

I think you need not worry ever about your manners being less than courtly here, TB. You kill me but yes, I do "forgive" you for your outburst and I also agree with you about giving Ford better films to represent him.

You can watch some Glenn Ford westerns on GET-TV.   I did the other night and they were really excellent and ones I hadn't seen.   Right now they are featuring Randolph Scott and Steve McQueen as well as some Lucille Ball movies.  I watch GET-TV on Saturday afternoon because they show Westerns I had never seen before especially a tongue in cheek one called NICHOLS with James Garner which is really different and delight (cars, motorbikes and horses all together).   Very interesting

Yes,  GET-TV features a lot of good entertainment that TCM doesn't.    Too bad there are so many commercials.

As for their Saturday programming;   Nichols and the other western shows like The Tal Man with Barry Sullivan are T.V. shows not movies.   Still they feature a lot of studio-era movie actors.     The Tal Man is strange since it is about Pat Garratt and Billy the Kid.  Here we have a mostly nice Billy and the two are very good pals.   I hoping to see the last episode to see if Pat finishes off Billy like he did in real life.

GET-TV is also featuring The Thin Man with Peter Lawford as Nick this month.     This was made in 1957 \ 58.    Sadly the actors are flat compared to Powell and Loy (but they were an unmatched couple) but the late 50s setting is a treat.
