But she was made to play Olive Oyl in Popeye, which she did splendidly!

Didn't she also go under the name of "Olive Oyl"?

EDIT: OMG, Swithin,  when I made the above comment I had NO idea that she was actually cast as Popeye's girl!  Truth is truly stranger than fiction.  I'd only seen her in Nashville and 3 Women (see below)

Oh, come on.  Shelley Winters was awesome as the annoying Charlotte Haze in Lolita.  "Excuse the soiled sock."  No wonder Humbert wanted to kill her.

And Shelley Duvall must split the vote too.

But I challenge anyone to name a good Hugh Herbert part!

Ted Lewis is right up there too.

Just having some fun.

She was excellent in 'Popeye'.

Hey, don't get me wrong.  I've got nothing against Shelley Duvall.  How can I ever not love anyone who can say that "I'm famous for my Tuna Melt" line with a straight face? B)

If you took all of Hugh Herbert's movies and had 100 people watch them all in various random orders, I'll bet that every one of them would say that no matter what the order, Herbert just kept getting more and more insufferable  with each successive film.  It'd be like throwing a bunch of lobsters in a cold water pot and then slowly turning up the heat.

Shelley was pretty good in the PBS Short Story series they did quite a few years back. She played Bernice in F. Scott Fitzgerald's  "Bernice Bobs her Hair" playing alongside an excellent Bud Cort (Harold and Maude). If I remember right, these were half hour takes on famous short stories and they were pretty well done.

Holy moly, I just realized that I'd completely forgotten about Jerry Lewis, which is kind of like overlooking a twelve inch goiter on a person's neck.  But then are we allowed to consider an actor as the "most annoying" if we've only seen him in clips and previews?

The medical equivalent of Jerry Lewis.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some might find a 12-inch goiter to be a turn-on.

Yes, Shelley Duvall was brilliant as Millie Lammoreaux in 3 WOMEN. Does Millie really believe that she is "all that" even though others blatantly avoid and mock her?

Her skirt hanging out of the car door always amuses me.

And Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek) thinks Mille is "the most perfect person" she's ever met!

"Wash those potatoes."

"Yes, ma'am. All of them?"

"All of them. Put 'em in the pot."

"This pot?"

"I'm not gonna answer that."

I think I may have to watch 3 WOMEN this weekend.

May I humbly submit for your consideration....

Sandy Dennis

"Oh my god, we're being robbed again."  The real question is why no one in NYC didn't just shoot her dead on the spot.  May I quote Pauline Kael via wikipedia?

"....said that she (Dennis)  "has made an acting style of postnasal drip."

Bingo.

And speaking of grating voices.  I add my vote for the utter annoyance of Andy Devine.

Nope, I like Sandy Dennis.

I'm a fan of Sandy Dennis as well.

Does anyone know this line of hers?

"You may leave the party at any time."

OMG (as Sandy Dennis would say.) I totally forgot about her.  Yes, she is major

annoying.  Don't forget about her "I paint vegetables or is it I AM a vegetable"

performance in "The Four Seasons."

;)

Yep Swithin, I do occasionally do that.

I think I probably became a dyed-in-the-wool Groucho fan when one of the independent TV stations in L.A. started broadcasting the reruns of that program in the early-to-mid '70s, though I do vaguely remember watching it first-run with my Mom and Dad as a small tyke and them loving it, too.
