Remember the scene where Cagney is made up as an old man and fools Joan Leslie into thinking that he really is old?  That's one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie.  I've been looking for a picture of him in that scene, but I can't find one.

It's amazing to me that this movie has Cohan the Kid made up to look old, then Cohan actually old--how does a makeup artist make that distinction? This is one movie that makes me sad there wasn't a Makeup Oscar for so many years.

Seriously though, TB, post the next category--go ahead :)

Yes, it is sad that there were makeup artists who never had the chance to be awarded for their amazing work.

By the way, I found a picture of Cagney as the old man!  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a picture that showed his whole face.

Sorry for going slightly off track, TopBilled.  Feel free to post the next category.

:)

No worries. This has been an interesting discussion. I'm enjoying it.

Since I am getting the go-ahead, LOL, here's the next category (and it's sort of tongue-in-cheek):

=================================

I know we've already moved on to another category, but....

I haven't been on the boards since Thursday, so I missed the chance to contribute to the "animal stars" category.  Some of my animal actor picks have already been mentioned.  If you don't mind, I'd like to add the following animal actors to the list:

- Keiko, who played Willy in Free Willy

- Tara, Levi, Boo Boo and Mercedes, who all played Jack (the undead monkey) in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

- Ben, Rattler and Tiki, who played Shadow, Chance and Sassy in the Homeward Bound movies

- Chiffon, who played Shaggy in The Shaggy Dog (1959)

- Spike, who played Old Yeller in Old Yeller

Did they use the same animal to play his son in the sequel SAVAGE SAM? Or was it a different one? I can't seem to locate any information on this.

I can't find the information either.  The real names of the animals can usually be found on the IMDB page, but there is no name listed for Savage Sam.

I guess it depends on how much of a gap occurred between the two films, and if the original dog had aged much.

Just obscure character actors I know, since you used up the well known names :)

Great examples. I should have remembered the Shearer-Leigh connection. Thanks!

Katharine Hepburn helped Judy Holliday become a movie star.

Yes. Good example. And I would guess that Kate was also instrumental in helping her niece land a key role in GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (though Katharine Houghton did not become a major star).

I didn't realize Bergen worked with him so often. I had to look it up, and you're right. She was in AT WAR WITH THE ARMY; THAT'S MY BOY; and THE STOOGE (the only one I knew for sure).
