No, the oil industry killed the Keystone pipeline.  they are unable to convincingly establish that it is not a threat to the aquifer for millions of people, let alone the environment in general.

As I have said before, let the construction companies and the oil industry using it provide security bonds for $40 billion in the event of a rupture or other event.

They won't, because they know it will leak just as other pipelines do.  Happens all over the country.

It's not your water and life that is threatened.

Almost a year ago a leak was discovered in a pipeline of one of the largest pipeline companies in America.  It extends across the southern US.  Initially the company reported it as a small leak, but later reported that it was actually 250,000 gals of gasoline.  I believe a property owner actually discovered it.

Regardless, a year later they have removed almost 200,000 gals of gasoline from the site, as well as several hundred thousand tons of soil.  The area has trenches and impoundment wells to collect the gasoline contaminated groundwater.

Nearby farmland, to include an orchard, were contaiminated by the gasoline.

Nearby streams were contaminated with carcinogens.

The company reports that there is no end in site for the "clean-up."

This was not the first pipeline leak in this area.

This was pure gasoline and not the dirty sludge that is planned for Keystone.

Incidentally, the Keystone pipeline proponents are beginning to lose interest as it is no longer really needed and would probably not be financially very beneficial.

Furthermore, there would have been a few thousand temporary jobs during construction of the pipeline and very, very few after that.

obama dragged his decision on long enough and in so doing successfully waited out the keystone xl proponents.

he never wanted to greenlight keystone xl in the first place and for years hid beyond excuses like environmental concerns and temporary jobs bs.

that is of course his prerogative as potus but when he tells the public how keen he is on spurring job creation the man is full of bleep.

:D

thousands of temporary jobs woulda helped some people for a time.

I mean either the man can empathize with the plight of the unemployed or he's full of lyin' hs!

Hundreds of thousands of temporary and even many long-term jobs would be created if Republicans in Congress agreed to Obama's transportation bill.  Plus the entire nation would benefit from it, not just a few billionaires and workers in a few states.

Not just about jobs, it is about threat to envirnonment and people's health for the benefit of a very few.

Actually, expansion of Obamacare and Medicaid and increased minimum wage would create millions of jobs nationwide.

The pipeline may have created a few temporary jobs but would have done nothing for the country's infrastructure, which sorely needs upgrading. Here is an example of what should be done:

Lillian Gish was a life-long Republican until she supported FDR. FDR had been criticized for creating the Public Works Administration (PWA) in order to build infrastructure and ease unemployment. The Republicans, always worried about government spending and higher taxes for the wealthy, criticized FDR. Lillian Gish defended FDR. Here's an excerpt from her speech, which is as timely today as when Miss Gish wrote it:

“In this City the improvements supported through government agencies have been vast, useful, and glorious. Our Midtown Tunnel is under construction. We put the City in modern clothes, making its streets more stylish, its parks and playgrounds more attractive. Education has been aided, sanitation facilitated.

From my windows I can see the great Triboro Bridge. It connects one part of the City with another and was completed I learned with PWA funds. And I think of the Parthenon in Athens, which was built along with other beautiful buildings on the Acropolis by Pericles and his PWA funds that he raised in his day to relieve unemployment. And I wonder if he too had been opposed as violently as our President for his public works, works that have outlived all opposition.”

"Creating jobs" to sustain a business that causes great harm to the environment and the public health is just plain stupid. The only ones to benefit are the people who have their own financial investment at stake and no concern for the welfare of the public. These people have no sense of moral duty to the public, only lining their already over stuffed pockets.  They have no shame, or soul as far as I am concerned.

A lot of college buildings, schools, public buildings, bridges, roads, etc. were built by FDR's WPA.  Many are still standing.

The WPA not only created jobs, it also saved small companies that supplied the materials.

While it did create many things such as parks, "stylish streets" and playgrounds, the transportation, educational and other public infrastructure contributed mightily to this country's progress and the improvement of ALL US citizens.

It also prepared men to become soldiers or defense workers in WW  II, although that was not intentional.

some blonde hollywood bimbo went to a brazilian rainforest and criticized an indigenous man who was the sole economic support for his fourteen relatives (including elderly parents) for cutting down trees.

did the arrogant airheaded little tomato offer to fly him and his family back to her hollywood home to put them up rather than have him continue to cut down trees???

no! she did not. they never do. typical phony liberal hs.

Actually the GOPers, Wall Street and Main St. have already made that choice - they chose profits.  Huge profits and low taxes for corporations and the wealthy.

The left, whoever they are, does not deny that private enterprise needs to make profits.  They only believe that the people should not suffer so that a very small group can make enormous profits.

Here's an interesting article. It's not exactly germane to this thread, but it sort of could go in any of the current political threads.

http://www.salon.com/2015/11/09/lets_get_excited_about_hillary_clinton_shes_not_a_savior_but_she_is_exactly_what_we_need/

good point to remember.....

"The president isn’t some dictator who can just change the country however he or she wants. The reality is that the executive powers are limited, since presidents don’t write legislation. It’s an office that rewards a willingness to work through bureaucracy and to express power in incremental, detailed ways, especially if you’re saddled with a Congress that opposes you, which any _________

who wins almost surely will be."

yet some rich blonde hollywood bimbo woulda had a man who was the sole supporter of his family give up mowing down trees in a brazilian rainforest. did she suggest an alternative line of work for him? no. she just arrogantly and self-righteously demanded that the man stop cutting down trees and THIS is the real folly of liberalism...

this brazilian man had no choice. he either cuts down trees or his family members starve! does this hollywood bimbo 'actress' suggest any alternatives? no, because she had none. she offer her own abode to the man and his family? no. she just pontificates that he stop cutting trees down...

and what is that folly???...

narcissism over people.

Sounds like another made up sound bite from Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, or who ever.  The danger that this man and his family in Brazil face is when some big corporation comes in and just clear cuts down a vast tract of land.
