Favorite Screen Couples?

8 posts in this topic

There are sooo many screen teams out there in classic film, especially, with some more well known than others. I think some that I've always been a fan of are, Greer Garson/Walter Pidgeon, Myrna Loy/William Powell (and Myrna Loy with ANY man, to be honest), Bing Crosby/Danny Kaye (White Christmas), Bob Hope/Bing Crosby, Cary Grant/Rosalind Russell...

I don't know if I think of Crosby/Kaye when thinking of screen couples.

I read or hear the term and think of "man/woman" couples!

;)

And I'd say your forum handle contains one at the top of my list!

And, of course Bogey and Bacall

Tracy and Hepburn

Virginia Mayo and Steve Cochran  were seemingly paired together almost to the point I once thought they had something going!  But DID have good chemistry...

Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne worked well together.

So did Maureen with Brian Keith (Parent Trap)  AND with Jimmy Stewart(Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation)

But of course, when you START with greatness, you get great results.

And there are SO many good "pairings" to mention, and I'm in the middle of several dental proceedures, and my jaw is THROBBING too much for me to give respectable concentration.

I always love the Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland pairing.  In fact, Errol could be paired up with anyone and it would work for me.  Alas, he and I were never a pair, but I would have had to have been born either 80 years earlier or at least invent time travel, lol.  If only Errol had appeared in a film where he played a dual roll.  Two Errol Flynns in one film, I don't know if I could handle it.

...Okay now that my fan girl moment is out of the way...

You mentioned many great pairings.. I also like:

-Lucy & Desi, who appeared together in my favorite film ever: The Long Long Trailer

-Katharine Hepburn/Cary Grant

-Clark Gable/Jean Harlow

-Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers

-Gene Kelly/Judy Garland

Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr.  The rake and the lady.  They brought out the best in each other and seemed a great match.  Watching Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison is delightfully tortuous for this Catholic; God vs. Mitchum.  God wins but barely; don't ask me who I'd pick.  In The Sundownwers the sparks should be burning down the tent; these two are sexier in clothes than most of today's actors can ever be with it all off.

How many movies together before becoming a screen couple?

I like Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer (The Big Steal and Out of the Past).

And if we are including "teams," what about Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau?

It can be a one-time pairing or a multiple-time pairing, it doesn't matter to me in the least. If you liked a specific pairing, just throw it on out there. :)
