HAPPY BIRTHDAY! II

1,027 posts in this topic

Larry, the birthday of the glamourous Binnie Barnes is on May 25th. Today is the anniversary of her death.

Indeed, Keenan Wynn is the son of comic Ed Wynn. It was in my notes but the old eyeballs skipped right over it.

By the way, it was Keenan who encouraged his father to begin acting in films, later in life. He went on to cop a best supporting Oscar nomination for "The Diary of Anne Frank".

Hey Mongo,

My old eyes are crossed and blurry too.... What a faux-pas congratulating old Bins on dying!!!!!

She would have laughed though, she was a great one for loving it when people put their feet in their mouths. And, I certainly did.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll ask her to sprinkle some stardust down form Heaven on you in Florida..... I'm sure she's up there on a cloud of white chiffon and mink.......

TOOMANYNOTES, it's my pleasure. I was also wondering why we didn't see a few Joe E. Brown flicks on TCM today. He certainly was a hoot.

Keep the Candygram on hold, since I may get a spurt of inspiration to continue.

At the time, as today, many felt that her death was actually a murder connected to the goings-on at her club, a theory that was lent credence by the fact that no one who knew her had ever seen her depressed or morose enough to the point of being worried about her committing suicide. Hi Mongo,

I find it very amusing that two of the silent screen's sex symbols were born on the same day. Theda and Clara!

Theda bara was ironically one of the nicest and most charitable ladies on Earth. She was very instrumental in Cedar-Sinai Hospital charities.

Also, she looked like a proper upper class lady -- not all that koal makeup around her eyes and no spider-web dresses.

She was married for thirty or so years to director Charles Brabin, a very proper Englishman.

He died about a year after her......

"On the TV series "Make Room for Daddy" as Danny Thomas' original wife (Emmy Award nominee)."

This was a surprise to me, I had no idea Jean Hagan was on the show; I only saw Marjorie Lord as Danny Thomas' wife. Did I only see episodes from later in the series? Did her character die, and Ms. Lord came in as a second wife? Or were they playing the same character? I'm very curious. Thanks Mr. Mongo!

Jack, though nominated twice for Emmy awards as Danny Thomas' first TV wife on his popular comedy series "Make Room for Daddy" (1953), Jean became disenchanted with the rather colorless mom role and left the series after four seasons. She 'died' in the script, and eventually Marjorie Lord replaced her as Danny's perky second wife.

It surprises me that she left a hit TV series.

The episodes with Marjorie Lord are on DVD, and word is that the Jean Hagen eposides will also make it to DVD.

I'm stunned: four years! So Marjorie Lord's character is supposed to be the step-mother to the kids. Did the storyline deal with the death and mourning? I thought this was a light comedy! I believe I only saw this show in reruns, and I wonder if they just didn't rerun the Jean Hagan episodes.
