A POLL; VOTE FOR THE GREATEST ACTORS & ACTRESSES OF ALL-TIME

28 posts in this topic

(*-always denotes an *Academy (AMPAS) Award winner)

I see another TCM-ITE has already posted a somewhat similar topic/poll/survey on this section. However, this 1 is different, in that I hope fans will cast their votes for either their favorite motion picture actors & actresses, or what they rank as the best, very often 2 different things. & there is no limit either-unlike "AFI's 100 Years...100 stars" (1999 survey & poll) where they had the top 25 of each. The American film institute's also had a rule that each voted on had to either made their screen debut in or before 1950. It's top 10 are listed below first. It's special/survey was widdled down from an overall (250) & like 1998's epic tv event "AFI's 100yrs...100 Movies"-(SEE my other post about it) it was also televised on CBS-tv (NOTE: I was lucky enough to be sent both videos back then)

(AFI's top 10 male movie stars-1999):

*1st place Humphrey Bogart-(l899-l957)

2. Cary Grant....(l904-l986)

*8. James Cagney..(l899-l986)

*9. Spencer Tracy (l900-67)

& *10th Charles Chaplin (l889-l977)

AND; (top 10 actresses):

*1st place Katharine Hepburn (l907-2003)

*2. Bette Davis...(l908-l989)

*3. Audrey Hepburn (l929-93)

*4. Ingrid Bergman (l9l5-82)

5. Greta Garbo...(l905-90)

6. Marilyn Monroe (l926-62)

*7. Elizabeth Taylor (l932-2011)

8. Judy Garland..(l922-69)

9. Marlene Dietrich (l90l-92)

& *10th Joan Crawford (l904-77)

AND; now for my own personal favorite actors:

*1. Spencer Tracy

*2. Frank Sinatra

*3. James Cagney

4. Steve McQueen (l930-l980)

& *5th Charlie Chaplin

& my candidates for the greatest:

*1. Spencer Tracy

*3. Marlon Brando

*4. Laurence 0livier (l907-1989)

& *5th Anthony Hopkins (l937-)-(NOTE: almost a tie with: *Daniel Day-Lewis-(l957-)

AND; my fav. actresses:

& maybe just to try and get the voting ball rolling, I wrote this topic I think yesterday & nobody replied to it either?

Basically it was of a 1971 Variety poll of industry insiders & they all voted on the best of the hal century & again, I'll post some of the results, but not what they chose for Best Film, Producer & Director

& their own poll was separated into (3) areas (Silent Era) (Sound Era) & (Overall)

  Best Actor (silent era):

 *Chaplin

  Actress:

  Garbo

  Best Actor (sound era):

 *Spencer Tracy

& Actress:

 *Ingrid Bergman

AND; Best Actor-(overall):

         *Chaplin

         Actress:

         Garbo

(P.S. for those more interested & from the files (www/Hollywood.com) in '99-(they need a revision & I've nagged them about it)

conducted 1 of thee largest movie polls in  internet history & w/tons of genre's, including different era's, actors, actresses, etc

It would take 6 or more hours for me to type it in on here, but I can do the (performers) if anyone wants?

First I'm not going to list 'greatest' actors or actresses because I don't have enough knowledge of the acting profession to do so (but hey, ask me about the greatest guitar players and you will get a list that can't be questioned,  ha ha).

So here are my favorite actors and actresses.    Clearly favorites since some like Errol Flynn or Alan Ladd are not as solid as actors as Spencer Tracy (hey I know that much),  but they are the lead in some of my favorite films.

Leslie Howard

Humphrey Bogart

Cary Grant

Robert Mitchum

William Powell

James Cagney

Gary Cooper

Errol Flynn

Alan Ladd

John Garfield

Bette Davis

Barbara Stanwyck

Olivia DeHavilland

Jean Arthur

Carol Lombard

Audrey Hepburn

Katherine Hepburn

Rosalind Russell

Myrna Loy

Joan Crawford

I forgot to mention that because he is, in my opinion, the greatest singer all time - male or female -

Frank Sinatra was a great actor too.

I do, however, think of his as a singer first, and an actor second.  That is NOT a putdown.

But you were asking for favourite actors and actresses, and well, I forgot to mention him.

Yikes!

WOW! Thanks first of all for submitting her beautiful shots on here!-(don't think NATALIA ever took a bad photo)

I've been "IN LOVE" with here even and entire year before she went away   Which easily ranks among the top 3 worst times of my life, I was almost 18 at the time by the way & as all insist she was as beautiful on her inside, as her outside-(NEVER 1 SINGLE COMPLAINT. Her mother of a mother-(Maria) was entirely different story-(LONGER STORY)  Got to go past her humble-(for B. Hills home in Nov. of '99. & had wanted to see her burial section-BIG-TIME!) Since she went away on Nov. 29th, 1981  Finally did & it was sooo drawing walking into the only 3 & 1/2 acre part in Westwood, CALIF. I actually had to be held up my friend!  It was then 18yrs  later  Got tons of photos, including her pennies-(she loved them)  & lg amount of flowers as well & It made me feel petty neat, when Marilyn's niche hardly had any, just on this particular day of course.

She made (46 theatrical films) @3 tv works in 39yrs. Tons of cross-referenced things I scooped around for over the year & now the net.  Her full name was NATALIA NIKOLAEVNIA ZHARENKO  Russian & typically of the HCOC she wasn't even given a Walk-of-Fame Star until '87, 6yrs later Located in frt of the legendary Roosevelt Hotel?

In short here are my short list of my top (5) favs of her movies>

"Splendor in the Grass" (l96l)-(also her fav.notice her yacht?)

"Rebel without a Cause" (l955)-(her first of just 3 shots)

*"West Side Story" (196l)

"Miracle on 34th street" (l947)

"Inside Daisy clover" (l965)-(by far her best, but can't stop watching NAT in it)

(Honorable mention):

"The Searchers" (1956)-(as you know though not a showcase for her as Debbie)

& she snagged her final shot at the *AMPAS Award for the fun 1963's"Love With the Proper Sranger"-(opposite my very first hero as a kid McQueen)

THANKS & IF YOU EVER WANT TO REACH ME ABOIUT HER,etc (jeffshannon50@gmail.com)

(P.S. Can you believe her biggest $hiot$ though was the good (***) at best 1969 "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice?"

Drawing from my choices in the Performances thread and awarding 10 points for a first place and down the line to 1 point for a tenth place finish this is what I came up with ...

Actor.

1.  Jack Nicholson

2.  Robert De Niro

3.  Humphrey Bogart

4.  Marlon Brando

5.  Laurence Olivier

6.  Gene Hackman

7.  Robert Duvall

8.  Anthony Hopkins

9.  Al Pacino

10. Philip S. Hoffman

Actress

1.  Meryl Streep

2.  Katharine Hepburn

3.  Bette Davis

4.  Kate Winslet

5.  Liv Ullmann

6.  Diane Keaton

7.  Ellen Burstyn

8.  Deborah Kerr

9.  Ingrid Bergman

10. Maggie Smith

With this method it helps to have had a long career with good roles.  And to have had good roles in years with less competition.

Who else had rare opportunity to visit her rather humble home on canon, drive in B. Hills, Griffith Park 0bservatory, Warner Bros VIP tour & museum-(though likely they got rid of her outfits, to make  more room for the "DK" jazz by now???), & her modest grave in tiny 3 & 1/2 acre Westwood, cem?

Plus, for those utra-into NATALIE, she finally got a WOF-STAR in '87-(posthumously) in frt of "ROOSEVELT HOTEL

S& for those that may still not be aware, always look for somekind of wristband, bracelet & such, It 's a long story involving her MONTER OF A MOTHER-(Maria),  back in the 1940's  Only time NATALIE gave in was the tub scene in "Splendor" It's always her left wrist
