LOL. Why is the milkman always blamed? I wonder if much hanky panky went on in those days. They DID have deliveries to make!

That's what I'm saying!   ;)

So a long faced mother has to have a long faced child???

Good point here, Hibi!

Yep, in fact, if you've ever seen any pictures of Sarah Jessica Parker's kids, then you know not ONE of 'em look ANYTHING like either Edna May Oliver OR Secretariat at all.

(...nope, they must take after Matthew's side of the family)

We had them in the 1970s and 80s, too (well, okay, not exactly yesterday...).

I remember we had one when I was a child. Our house even had a milk box built in!!! (LOL) He was always friendly. Then carry outs took over (and probably) undersold them. In some ways, I miss those more innocent times. We also had a chip/pretzel guy that came around. Sold them in metal tins..........

I think they picked up the empty tins when we were through...

Hey Hibi, you DO know your next reply to DGF should now be somethin' like...

"Well then, isn't Trader Joe's open by that time?!!"

.

I think the film was a hit with audiences (but not critics) and an aggressive Oscar campaign for Dodo was launched by the producers, but she did not get nominated, and I want to say she only did comedies thereafter until her screen retirement eight years later.

Yes, that is true. The experience was so traumatic for her she vowed never to do another drama and she never did.  Too bad, as she had the chops, but this just wasn't the vehicle for them.

I really hate those flip hair-dos from the early 60s. All the girl singers had them

Alfred Hitchcock took notice of Doris' performance in Storm Warning and later she got the role in The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Was that something on the doorstep for him to leave the milk in? Like a mailbox for milk?

No, it was actually a little box that was built into the house that could be opened from the inside and the outside (not very good for security as it was right by the back door) Many older houses had them built in like that. Now, alas, it has a metal brace on it so it cant be opened (no use for it now anyway...) Ours opened next to the kitchen door.

I guess it had to do with the milk not getting stolen, knocked over or left in the hot sun if no one was home? Or for us to leave the empties if not home? Ours didn't have a lock, so someone could've taken stuff if they wanted to. I remember the milkman coming inside (as my mother didn't work when I was young) so not sure how often it was used....

To segue back to Doris, there was a milkman in SEND ME NO FLOWERS who was a notorious gossip.

Well, I HAVE always been inclined toward expanding my palate whenever the opportunity presents itself, ya know. ;)

(...so, that Wally Cox Chablis...is it French, Napa or upstate New York?...although I hear nice buttery vintages are coming up from Chile lately?)

Me:

Hibi (the OP) is a good hostess, she doesnt mind too bad if the conversation wanders a tad.

Nice as it is to talk Doris, I'm still slightly beguiled by the whole notion of a door in your house that people would deliver dairy products through.

At our house we had a metal milk box, and in winter the milk would freeze solid.

Oh, well, you see that is a great thing.  I was just wondering about the moderator putting git in off topic.

As for Hibi being a good hostess, I did not know whether Hibi was male or female until just now.  As I mentioned to Eugenia in my thread off topic that I have allowed to be taken over by  the United Church scandal here in Canada rather than any reference at all to ignoring or blocking people on this site:

I am a woman who is sometimes referred to as Mr. Peck because of my screen name.  I generally guess  gender when not talked about when I want to make a post that refers to pronouns.

If necessary, I will take the gender of the screen name or the avatar persona.  I cannot do this when the person has a colour as a screen name.  I know Dark Blue I a man.  But others................no.

As far as milk bottles are concerned - how about The Aviator and Hughes? Yikes.
