How to search for Silent Comedies (all) on TCM schedule?

3 posts in this topic

Hi there!

I'm a huge fan of silent comedies, especially all the superstars, Chaplin, Keaton, Arbuckle, but I love the obscure ones too.  But I find that I often miss the chance to record them on my DVR from TCM because I haven't yet worked out a way to search by this genre.  I feel very lucky when I chance on one or two in the listings, but I miss about as many as I catch.

I would be very interested in recording and enjoying all silent comedies on TCM, features and shorts as well, if I could only work out a good method of searching.  Does anyone else on the board have any advice that goes beyond going through the TCM schedule hour by hour every day?

Thanks very much in advance!

Jeff in Atlanta

Hi Jeff, nice to hear from another fan of the glorious world of silent films. I suspect you won't have reason to check back for and answer, as the silent film forum doesn't have the same level of traffic as in the past. The answer to your question is, unfortunately, the website doesn't support the search capabilities you and many of us would hope for, allowing us to focus on silent films. For the present, the best means of uncovering a film that might be new to you is, as you said, searching the schedule a week or so in advance. Best wishes and hoping all your silent dreams come true.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a section where they would announce when/what silents would be shown? It can be difficult to look through the full schedule without accidently missing one; I used to only look for them on the Sunday schedule because of Silent Sunday, but I've seen them also played on week days, so now I look at the full week schedule. It would be so much easier if there was a space just for silent film announcements. Its great to see that there are still some folks who appreciate the silents here on TCM, I've read many great posts by silent film fans, what are some of your favorite silent gems?
