Your Favorite Mann - Stewart Film

11 posts in this topic

Among their many collaborations I think that " Winchester '73 ", " The Naked Spur', and " The Far Country " are the best. In fact I think that all three rank in the top twenty Western of all time.

> Are we talkin' WESTERNS here?

Any kind of film. But most of the Mann - Stewart flicks were Westerns.

Ken, I agree that I'd hate to have to decide between "Winchester '73," "Naked Spur" and "Far Country."

The last one I saw was "Winchester '73," so I guess I'll have to pick that one.

Hi Ken,

My personal favorite is THE FAR COUNTRY and I think it's because it has the most humor of the westerns---and I really like the comeraderie between Stewart and Walter Brennan. The "villain" is charming enough to be compared to Hitchcock's debonaire rogues and the sweetness of the heroine is a relieving counterpoint to all the Mann/Stewart cynicism.

I am also one of the few fans of the non-western collaboration, THUNDER BAY. The topic is still pretty relevant today---explointing a valuable natural resource and its impact on the environment, but it's rowdy and fun and anything but preachy.

P.S. Does anyone know if Hawks ever directed Jimmy? Because it seems as if they could have had a mutually satisfying partnership as well.
