  1. Ziegfeld Girl (1941) Jimmy Walters: Soon as I saw you, I said to myself "that's a hot lookin' little number." Sheila: Don't let it throw you, champ. I'm 20 degrees cooler than you think. Jimmy Walters: Ah, one of them refrigerator dames, huh? Sheila: That's right, and you're not the guy to defrost me either.

  2. This is one of the most entertaining threads I've run across in a long time (although there are many others). I'm not surprised that Groucho has been mentioned prominently. Here's a favorite of mine from A Night At The Opera: Groucho and Margaret Dumont are having dinner together in a restaurant. Waiter: Your check, sir. Groucho: Nine dollars and forty cents? This is an outrage. [Throws the check across the table to Margaret.] If I were you, I wouldn't pay it.

  11. If Olivia told the publisher she wouldn't say little to nothing about her relationship with Joan then it is understandable why the publisher would cancel any book deal. I'm not saying that Olivia has to throw tons of dirt on Joan, or any dirt at all, but any book from her about her life can't just ignore what happened, especially given the fact that Joan was also a major star and celebrity. Oh well; I would have been very interested to hear Olivia's side of her relationship with John Huston, but again, only if Olivia was able to be fairly transparent. Again, I'm not looking for dirt but instead just the perspective of the other-one-involved. Last year I read Courage and Art a bio about John Huston and found the "take" on Olivia fascinating. But of course that was mostly Huston's take on their relationship.

  12. OR...now hear me out on this. Dorothy Lamour lights a cigarette and 'accidentally' sets Mrs. Danvers on fire! More gruesome than your ending for sure, lydecker, but it would be more in keeping with the ending Daphne du Maurier had in mind, don't you think? 😀🚬

  15. There are so many actors/actresses who had tragic lives it would be impossible to name them all. Here are a few that I think of when I hear the phrase 'tragic figure'..... Rebecca Shaeffer - murdered at age 21 by obsessed fan Robert Bardo Silent actor Wallace Reid died trying to get off morphine. Mabel Normand - Died from TB but her life & career were destroyed by the William Desmond Taylor/Fatty Arbuckle/Courtland S. Dines scandals as well as her drug/alcohol use. Ramon Novarro - murdered by two hustlers he invited into his home for sex Heather O'Rourke - dead from cardiac arrest caused by septic shock brought on by intestinal stenosis from a bowel blockage at age 12. Phil Hartman - murdered at age 49 by his wife, Brynn. Brandon Lee - died young like his dad (age 28); accidentally shot & killed while filming what would be his break-through film 'The Crow'. Albert Dekker - suffered a gruesome death! From BuzzFeed: 'In 1968, after going missing for a few days, his fiancé found him naked and kneeling in his bathroom tub. He was bound by chains, and a noose was wrapped around his neck and hung from a curtain rod. Hypodermic needles were stuck in both of his arms, and slurs were written all over his body with red lipstick. The police ruled it a suicide, which the coroner and press rejected. No further investigation was done, and the official ruling was an "accidental death from auto-erotic asphyxiation." No suspects were found.' Sharon Tate - she & her unborn child were murdered by the Manson family Jon-Erik Hexum - The 'Voyagers' star died at age 26 by shooting himself in the head with a blank gun while in between takes. He was playing Russian Roulette but apparently didn't realize how powerful the prop gun was.

  21. I performed my fourth and last stint volunteering to assist at COVID-19 vaccination site. I had to bend over several times to reach the bottom of a large box in order to retrieve banners to be used to separate lines of people awaiting their turn. I saw three men in reflection of polished brass sign next to the box. Two were late-fortyish in suits and one was perhaps mid-twenties in EMT uniform. There was in my direction only blank concrete wall and the box on a pallet and two movable 'Enter Here' signs so I must assume that they were looking at me. I quickly turned around after snagging the last banner. The two in suits both smiled shyly and quickly went about their business. The cheeky little EMT gave me a thumbs-up and a big grin before going to his station. All that might be said in their defense is that they looked to be healthy American males and I was wearing black stirrup pants and am still at my fighting weight. My fuzzy was elsewhere in the building. The lady with whom I shared a station witnessed it and was quick to tell him of it when he came to say goodbye after his being processed. It was really quite lovely to see him not knowing what to say because it is usual for him to have a ready line for all occasions. The good news of the day is that my little fuzzy has now had all his shots and I have been poked.

  22. Groucho is the king of snarky comments. One of the only good movie books to come out in the 70's was WHY A DUCK? edited by Richard Anobile because it's has the very best snippets of Marx Bros movie scripts. I've used these: Why not bore a hole in yourself & let the sap run out? You haven't stopped talking since you got here. You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. Coach: What are doing with that cigar in your mouth? Groucho: What, you know another way to smoke it?

  25. I recall going out to dinner with a woman in which I "borrowed" a lot of one liners from Rodney Dangerfield and Woody Allen which were sprinkled throughout the meal. She's lucky she didn't gag on her food with all the laughing she did. But one of the biggest laughs I got from her that evening was from a line I took from Groucho: "When a woman has dinner with me I expect her to look me in the face. That's the price she has to pay."

And then a stray bullet hit her in a hunting accident in 1945, leaving her bound to a wheelchair. She had a bitter divorce case and lost custody of her son. It made her lose the will to live and she died in 1952, aged 31.

  36. I really enjoyed HBOs reboot of Perry Mason, the recreation on 1920's-1930s Loa Angeles, and Angels Flight was amazing. The scenario is Perry is. P.I. working on a child murder case for a lawyer E.B. who's secretary is Della Street. The Lawyer commits suicide a couple of episodes in and Perry passes the bar exam and takes over.. I've never read any of Earl Stanley Gardiner's novels so it was all fresh for me. It was well worth the $20 and change to buy the series streaming. A nice Noir-ish way to pass the time till the next Noir Alley. BTW, Eddie didn't mention the longer cut of They Won't Believe Me on Noir Alley because he's hawking the new Blu i on the Noir City site, lol.

  38. I was working my way through the run of "Cheers" not long ago, and I watched the episode "Relief Bartender". Often when going through the episodes I'd find myself looking up the actors and seeing what they did later. I looked up the little child actress in that episode and found out that she was murdered when she was ten years old. Made me depressed. 40. I've long been intrigued by Deborah Kerr's headwear as Hannah in "The Night of the Iguana. " Seems very nun-like, which I guess is appropriate. I found an entry from what is said to be a diary she kept while filming Iguana, and she does refer to Hannah's wimple. OCTOBER 26: By the time we got to Mismaloya it had stopped raining – although it was still grey. Everything pretty muddy with the rain and steamy with the heat. I climbed into my dress and “wimple” and hat and gloves, etc. – and John and Ray Stark came to have look. Ray felt it looked too elegant. And John felt it was not quite humorous enough. The latter is hard to achieve – a “funny” dress, one that is funny at first sight, but isn’t funny when the scenes don’t call for the dress to distract by being slightly comic. Anyway, after a great deal of hemming and hawing it was decided to use it as it is. we haven’t any time to change it really. And I would rather not. I don’t want her to be a ludicrous figure, and I feel that although she is broke, her original taste is that of a quite good artist – individual and with a style of her own.

  45. Olive Borden (1906-1947) was a big silent star, making $1500 a week during the 20s while working for Fox. She left the studio when she refused a pay cut. She had a hard time making the transition to sound, and her last credited role was in 1934, according to imdb. She was in the WACS during WWII, and afterwards fell into poverty and alcoholism. She had to take a job scrubbing floors to survive. She died at age 41 of a stomach ailment while living in a home for destitute women on skid row. Sound films that she made that are rather easy to find - "Dance Hall" and "Half Marriage" . Both films made at RKO in 1929.

  46. I also assumed the newbie felt I was cracking wise about anyone having seen a 1939 film in a theater that wasn't a revival theater (so say in the early 40s). I was sincere when I said "bravo" if that was the case; bravo for still being around (since one would have to be in their late eighties \ early 90s even if they saw the film as a child). My dad that passed away last year at 90 would tell me stories of seeing initial releases of films. His favorite memory was seeing Treasures of the Sierra Madre when he was 19. One of his favorite expressions for over 70 years was "We don't need no stinking badges"!
