  4. He ordered Brook Trout, which was a special that day. It had a sauce like a lighter-style Veronique (white wine, shallots, halved grapes, but no cream). I didn't like the dish and I think I tried to explain it with sort of a negative description, and I may have even attempted to subtly tell Mr. Allen that I did not think that he would enjoy it. This leads to a new sub-category for this thread... CELEBRITY SEND-BACKS (celebrities who sent back food at the Russian Tea Room) LORRAINE BRACCO and KEVIN COSTNER came in on a date once in the early 90's. Ms. Bracco ordered either the Eggplant or the Mushrooms a la Russe, which one doesn't matter both dishes were a mess of creamy goo with melted cheese in a small round casserole-like dish. I serve this to Ms Bracco and she's like "Oh! I didn't know this had all this dairy, can I order something else?" She may have been distracted when she was looking at the menu, after all Kevin Costner was a nice-looking man. And Ms. Bracco, wow, beautiful and sweet. I didn't care if she read the menu. And people, let me tell you... yes they were into each other (on that day). MEL BROOKS, no idea when this was but he orders Nova Salmon as an appetizer. I serve it. He asks me to take it back. "Can I have this with the onions not touching the Nova?" Me: "Onions on the side?" Mel Brooks: "No, same plate just not touching." Me in my mind: "ARE YOU SERIOUS" Me (actual): "Of course Mr. Brooks." I relay this request to the cold station guys, who are like, "Are you sh**ing me? "OK we'll show this guy." I think they had to go into the basement to find the biggest plate in the restaurant, it was like a 21 inch plate. The cooks carefully plated everything so that no two food items touched. I serve this monstrous plate to Mr. Brooks, and he looks at me like "You got me didn't ya"?"

  12. Because I'm lazy, I'm just going to name what I consider the best picture of each year, except I'm going back to 1920 as though the Oscars were going on then. And I'm jettisoning the half year Oscar rules. Also, the European film industry was far ahead of the American industry at the time, so I'm including foreign films in competition. Not to mention, we may have never seen the actual best pictures for these years since so many silent films have been destroyed. 1920 - Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1921 - The Phantom Carriage 1922 - Nosferatu 1923 - Safety Last 1924 - Sherlock Jr. 1925 The Big Parade 1926 - The General 1927 - Sunrise 1928 - The Cameraman 1929 - The Love Parade

Although that answer never occurred to me either--I was thinking of Meryl Streep, who was in The Seduction of Joe Tynan (1979) with Melvyn Douglas, and in Doubt (2008) and Julie & Julia (2009) with Amy Adams. Red Buttons was in Sayonara (1957) with James Garner, who was in Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002) with Sandra Bullock. Next: Gloria Grahame and Adam Driver

  16. The other night I watched GOOD SAM '48 starring Gary Cooper as Sam and Ann Sheridan as his wife Lucille. This seems to be Leo McCarey's pet project, as he wrote, produced & directed it. Sam, an exaggerated do-good-er is always loaning money & possessions to those in need while his own family suffers without. Lu tries being patient because she truly loves him, but is often exasperated. She consults the gentle local priest played by (formerly dastardly) Ray Collins who supports her while pointing out Sam's strengths. Lu manages to laugh a few things off, but.... everything culminates with the forever guest brother (note- who keeps the couple in separate bedrooms) and one of Sam's employees failed suicide, neighbor smashing their borrowed car, non payment of personal loans, a thief steals charity money, etc. And suddenly, this turns into a Wonderful Life wannabe. Sam, afraid to go home, even ends up in a saloon drinking to escape the snow & Lu's disappointment. Everyone in town realizes what a selfless humanitarian Sam has been and all is well when his boss promotes him & the bank gives him a loan to cover the stolen money. I found this incredibly confusing. There were several comedic moments that made me LOL, lightening the often grim tone of the movie. There were also a few moments that made me actually cry, both extremes incited by Ann Sheridan's charactor, since we can relate to her frustrations. Who loans their car for a weekend trip to the neighbor who's as blind as a bat? Gary Cooper was too seemingly stupid & emotionally distant for me to warm up to this charactor, although I felt the dialogue was well written. A real misfire. But it was great to see lovely Ann Sheridan in a different kind of role than her young whippersnapper WB roles. While not bad, the most interesting aspect is comparing this to IAWL to see what actually works in a movie & what does not translate well to the viewer.

  19. I'm thinking no last line after Gary carries Barbara off. Just face shots. The good guys looking happy, and the bad guys looking defeated. No words. The camera scans to the night sky. Stars. Snowflakes falling over the city as symbols of "the people."

  20. As I've said before the most amazing scene of this movie is the last when we see the restored city with all it's high rise buildings looking like a New York West and realize it's been only thirty years since the quake. I've always wondered if the damage was really as bad as what we saw on screen; thank you for showing me it was. This is indeed one of the greatest examples of special effects in movie history, not only for the carnage but the way the actors show the human toll. Loved ones lost and found, grief, pain, joy and courage all were all played perfectly by those with one line or a hundred. I felt like I was there. This is one movie I'll never tire of.

  30. I also have a large media collection but only 4 Blu Rays. The formats includes DVD, VHS and Laserdisc. When I acquired factory made VHS , keep them in drawer cabinets, my oldest is "Casablanca" by CBS/FOX video, year 1984. Still plays like new. Some people think their well taken cared of tapes may have degraded but after watching DVD's for so long, forgot it's much sharper than tape. One must keep magnetic media away from strong electrical fields to preserve them. Now for the SERIOUS movie collector..

  34. An article in today's Variety section of the Minneapolis Tribune begins: "It is a tribute to a country where people are free to honor noteworthy achievements regardless of creed, race or color," actress Fay Bainter said as she announced Hattie McDaniel as Oscar's best supporting actress of 1939. Now 82 years later, her statement may finally be true. It has taken too long, but this year's Academy Awards are the most diverse in Oscar history. (Unquote) Maybe this will be a larger audience than most of us are anticipating!

  40. There are so many actors/actresses who had tragic lives it would be impossible to name them all. Here are a few that I think of when I hear the phrase 'tragic figure'..... Rebecca Shaeffer - murdered at age 21 by obsessed fan Robert Bardo Silent actor Wallace Reid died trying to get off morphine. Mabel Normand - Died from TB but her life & career were destroyed by the William Desmond Taylor/Fatty Arbuckle/Courtland S. Dines scandals as well as her drug/alcohol use. Ramon Novarro - murdered by two hustlers he invited into his home for sex Heather O'Rourke - dead from cardiac arrest caused by septic shock brought on by intestinal stenosis from a bowel blockage at age 12. Phil Hartman - murdered at age 49 by his wife, Brynn. Brandon Lee - died young like his dad (age 28); accidentally shot & killed while filming what would be his break-through film 'The Crow'. Albert Dekker - suffered a gruesome death! From BuzzFeed: 'In 1968, after going missing for a few days, his fiancé found him naked and kneeling in his bathroom tub. He was bound by chains, and a noose was wrapped around his neck and hung from a curtain rod. Hypodermic needles were stuck in both of his arms, and slurs were written all over his body with red lipstick. The police ruled it a suicide, which the coroner and press rejected. No further investigation was done, and the official ruling was an "accidental death from auto-erotic asphyxiation." No suspects were found.' Sharon Tate - she & her unborn child were murdered by the Manson family Jon-Erik Hexum - The 'Voyagers' star died at age 26 by shooting himself in the head with a blank gun while in between takes. He was playing Russian Roulette but apparently didn't realize how powerful the prop gun was.

  42. Curly Howard died at age 48 of a stroke/brain hemorrhage in 1952. He is believed to have suffered the first of several strokes in late 1944/early 1945, while he was still a member of The Three Stooges. In his last films, his deteriorating health is sadly evident onscreen, as his performances became more and more sluggish. He suffered a debilitating stroke on the set of 1947's Half-Wits Holiday and was forced to retire from the group. He spent the last years of his life in and out of hospitals and nursing homes. He didn't live long enough to see the Stooges' resurgence in popularity in the late '50s when the team's films became afterschool staples on American television stations. The team has gained millions of new fans worldwide in the decades since, with Curly being singled out as the "favorite Stooge" of most fans. He has achieved cult-like status in our culture, not on the same level as James Dean or Marilyn Monroe, but almost. And he never got to see any of it. He never knew how loved he is by an adoring public. And that to me is tragic.
