I was recently watching "Star of Midnight," a major favorite of mine and, once again, just loved William Powell & Ginger Rogers as a team. What a shame that they never teamed again. Ditto for Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington who had amazing chemistry in "The Pelican Brief." What other great screen teams can you think of that only teamed once? Lydecker6 points

It's a shame Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyck only paired up in THE TWO MRS CARROLLS.6 points

Roz Russell & Cary Grant only costarred in HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940). Ginger Rogers & Henry Fonda are superb in a 20 minute segment of TALES OF MANHATTAN (1942). Why they didn't get their own movie is a mystery. Julie Harris & James Dean were not able to re-team after EAST OF EDEN (1955). Mary McDonnell & Kevin Costner were great in DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990). Too bad they haven't made any more films together.6 points

"Oh sure! Mention that rabbit and that mouse here together in this movie, but nooooo, nary a mention of me doing that show stopping piano duet I did in it with that other duck with a speech impediment from the Disney studio, eh?! Why, you're despicable!"5 points

Thank you Bricks for those stories! I am amazed you remember what these people ordered but suppose it's part of the story, but still. I appreciate your impression of the Woody Allen table. How wonderful your co-workers gave it back to Mel Brooks-banking on him having a good sense of humor-often comedians don't. Celebrity & fame can really change people, it can be a difficult life, lifestyle. It takes balls of steel to stand up in front of an audience & perform. That kind of confidence & risk taking tied to your livelihood must be incredible pressure. And who knows who your real friends are? I am amazed by the performing arts & those who have that sort of talent. I am even more amazed by those who have mastered graciousness.5 points

Just watched this on YT. Too much yack setting it up (and overacting!) and then (finally) the "salute" raced by with hardly time to read the names. The speed (at least on the YT clip) kept speeding up and slowing down. We whizzed by legends like Sean Connery and Olivia de Havilland. Probably the worst Oscar memorial clip I've seen.4 points

David Niven and Cary Grant only appeared together in The Bishop's Wife (1947), I would have liked to see this two Englishmen paired again, as friendly enemies.4 points

It went by so fast, I couldn't keep up. I could look at a photo and not read the name/job title or vice-versa but by the time it registered 2 or 3 more had flashed by. Maybe they cut the visuals to the fast beat of the music, which was a poor choice to begin with. Hope the people who put this together are called out.4 points

There was a short video presented before he received the award and it showed the many charitable acts he's organized, operated and funded over the years in his native Atlanta. (...I wasn't aware of them either, but my wife said she had heard of them)4 points

I was glad Hopkins won...I think he's done some very impressive, difficult work on screen over the years. And his performance in THE FATHER is among his very best. I feel it's childish to compare one actor to another. We should really be looking at an individual actor and his/her own worth as a performer given the raw materials he had to work with...my opinion.4 points

To me it seemed they were making the name transitions match the phrasing in the music. So some names they dwelled on for a second or two, and others were on for just a half-second or so. It was so random, as it would linger on an executive few in the public know, while sailing by better-known people.4 points

Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen only co starred once in Love With The Proper Stranger (1963), too bad since they had great chemistry together4 points

The program was designed to conclude on a sure-fire, uplifting, emotionally charged, spiritual, feel good, self-congratulatory note, but instead ended with "The Whales of August. "4 points

Agree. I like the idea that it keeps the flavor of the original. Is it supposed to be a period piece set in the 60's? I don't see NYC looking like that much anymore, nor the modest clothing. I'm not sure an update would be such a good thing for this movie-somehow I can't picture Maria twerking.4 points

Jean Arthur and Charles Boyer had really exceptional chemistry in History Is Made at Night (1937). I wish they had teamed up again.4 points

They never get it right. Why don't they just DROP IT???? I just watched it on twitter after posting this. AWFUL. Most of the people are shown so quickly you don't have time to read their name AND the profession of each! If you didnt know who the person was, you wouldn't know what they DID! Yet, they devote a MINUTE AND A HALF to introducing the segment! This is probably the worst one I've ever watched. PATHETIC.3 points

i've often thought that a brilliant premise for a comedy was for someone to win a surprise MAJOR AWARD over a POSTHOMOUS SHOO-IN and have to deal with the SUBSEQUENT OUTRAGE, FUROR and fall out- none of which did they ask for. Can you IMAGINE being SIR ANTHONY, blessedly asleep at 4:00 atop a pile of money in his seaside castle in beautiful Gggfflllynnnddnfflllyyynnnnnnnorrr, Wales and being SHAKEN AWAKE by an assistant and told he has to pull a JOAN CRAWFORD before ALL THE WORLD out in some field in about ten minutes??????? and at 83 too!!3 points

I'd like to recommend the four-part PBS series My Grandparents' War, also available on other media. Four British stars--Helena Bonham Carter, Mark Rylance, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Carey Mulligan--investigate the effect that WWII had on their grandparents. We've only seen the astonishing first episode, with Helena Bonham Carter learning that her grandmother, Lady Violet Bonham Carter, a Member of Parliament, had saved a Czech family from the Nazis and that her maternal grandfather, a Spanish diplomat, had saved hundreds of Jews by illegally issuing travel visas allowing people to cross Spain to Portugal after France had fallen to the Nazis. She meets two people who exist only because one of her grandparents saved their grandparents from the Nazis. Nicely photographed, brilliantly edited. Highly recommended. We are also enjoying the ongoing PBS series Atlantic Crossing, about the fall of Norway in WWII and the flight of the Crown Princess to America.3 points

Wow, yet another unexpected correct answer! (I assume you meant Cassandra and Spider-Man, btw.) I was thinking of Cicely Tyson, who appeared in The Bluebird (1976) and in The Help (2011) with Emma Stone. Sorry, MrMagoo, looks like you're off the hook. Kim Cattrall was in Porky's (1981) with Susan Clark, and in Ice Princess (2005) with Joan Cusack. Next: Dame May Whitty and Matt Damon2 points

Read somewhere in the past that Cary Grant (age 50) was offered role of Linus Larrabee in 1954's Sabrina but turned it down because he thought he would look too old next to Audrey Hepburn (age 25) and William Holden (age 36). So Bogie (age 54) accepted. Guess Grant changed his mind about Hepburn by 1963.2 points

Just looked at the clip on YT. Did the segment move that fast on the telecast? And what on Earth did all that preamble nonsense have to do with actors and other movie people who died last year? I don't recall any of them dying because of hate or racism or such. Or did I miss something in the news reports of their deaths? Sepiatone2 points

Hmmm..."americans of faith" and "poisonous apple", eh?! Yeah, that's IT! Maybe if Tyler JUST would've included a Bible quote or two in his speech, maybe he'd had won YOU and whole lot more "americans of faith" over TOO, eh Nip ol' boy??? I watched a little, recorded the rest. Then FF'd later. All I can say is FRANCES MCDORMAND AGAIN?????? 3 times now! I guess the 2 black actresses cancelled each other out. And Boseman not winning was a huge upset. Have seen neither performance, but he won all the previous awards and thought he was a shoo in. Glenn losing was a foregone conclusion A weird looking show. Why couldnt they just SAY the nominees without all the pretentious lead ins? (Laura Dern). A weird show (what I saw) and am sure the ratings will be in the basement!!!2 points

So I just rolled over and woke up, havenβt checked the news yet, but you know what would be funny? If the Academy bent over bass Ackwards to include minority actors in far-left entries, in the process alienating more traditional viewers and mainstream viewers.... AND THEN, They rearrange the show at great risk and bet everything on the very last award, and in that process did some thing so nuts that it ended up likely Re-alienating and burning bridges FOREVER with all the new viewers that they had bent over bass Ackwards to attract, like FOREVER FOREVER. Something nuts like not giving it to a BELOVED, downright deified Black Actor, Maybe even one with an iconic superhero role that makes him even more BELOVED and DEIFIED than your average actor, oh and also heβs DEAD- And instead giving it to an 83-year-old white guy from Wales who already has an Oscar. But thereβs absolutely no way on earth they would do something that ****ing stupid right? Oh well, off to check the news, wonder what happened last night.2 points

....as well as easy access to just referencing a particular scene or song, if a musical. I love that most 3-4 hour Bollywood movies "the songs" have their own menu, you can choose it & it plays only the sections of the movie with the song & dance numbers. Haha I just started buying CDs of my classic LPs because they're so cheap. We just bought a new vehicle and it does not have a CD player. It doesn't have ANYTHING. Everything now works through your phone and the car manufacturer "Apps". I don't use a cel phone & cautioned MrTiki against using his with the vehicle. If you read the "policy" to use their application, you have AGREED to ALLOW them to read & compile all your driving data (this is an electric vehicle) and any phone calls made using the car's bluetooth.2 points

It's Walter Brennan, who won Best Supporting Actor three times within the space of five years (for Come and Get It [1936], Kentucky [1938], and The Westerner [1940]). The first of these was given the first year the category itself even existed. (He was also nominated for Sergeant York [1941].) Of course, it's hard not to think of the many actors who were nominated even more often than him without ever winning (e.g., Peter O' Toole, Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, Thelma Ritter). But as you said, this doesn't mean he wasn't also well-deserving. And some of his most memorable performances weren't even nominated (e.g., To Have and Have Not and Rio Bravo).2 points

He ordered Brook Trout, which was a special that day. It had a sauce like a lighter-style Veronique (white wine, shallots, halved grapes, but no cream). I didn't like the dish and I think I tried to explain it with sort of a negative description, and I may have even attempted to subtly tell Mr. Allen that I did not think that he would enjoy it. This leads to a new sub-category for this thread... CELEBRITY SEND-BACKS (celebrities who sent back food at the Russian Tea Room) LORRAINE BRACCO and KEVIN COSTNER came in on a date once in the early 90's. Ms. Bracco ordered either the Eggplant or the Mushrooms a la Russe, which one doesn't matter both dishes were a mess of creamy goo with melted cheese in a small round casserole-like dish. I serve this to Ms Bracco and she's like "Oh! I didn't know this had all this dairy, can I order something else?" She may have been distracted when she was looking at the menu, after all Kevin Costner was a nice-looking man. And Ms. Bracco, wow, beautiful and sweet. I didn't care if she read the menu. And people, let me tell you... yes they were into each other (on that day). MEL BROOKS, no idea when this was but he orders Nova Salmon as an appetizer. I serve it. He asks me to take it back. "Can I have this with the onions not touching the Nova?" Me: "Onions on the side?" Mel Brooks: "No, same plate just not touching." Me in my mind: "ARE YOU SERIOUS" Me (actual): "Of course Mr. Brooks." I relay this request to the cold station guys, who are like, "Are you sh**ing me? "OK we'll show this guy." I think they had to go into the basement to find the biggest plate in the restaurant, it was like a 21 inch plate. The cooks carefully plated everything so that no two food items touched. I serve this monstrous plate to Mr. Brooks, and he looks at me like "You got me didn't ya"?"2 points
