The Family Way (1966) TCM -9/10 A newly wed young man (Hywel Bennett) moves into his parents house with his new wife (Hayley Mills), he finds he cannot consummate his marriage. This is a very funny and often touching film, one of my favorites of 1960s British cinema. The acting is excellent, Bennett was one of the more underrated actors of the time. Former child star Mills is now a lovely young lady and shows she can now handle adult roles. The best performances come from John Mills and Marjorie Rhodes as Bennett's parents. John Mills is the macho laborer father who is puzzled by his bookish, sensitive son. Rhodes provides some of the biggest laughs with her dry wit. John Comer is Hayley's understanding dad and Avril Angers plays her drama queen mother. The funniest scene in the film and one of favorite scenes ever has the four parents getting together to discuss the couple's problem. Rhodes tells of her own honeymoon in which her new husband brought his best mate along! The writing is very witty and expertly performed. There is also an interesting twist to the story. There is great location shooting in Lancashire, beautifully capturing the country life of the town. Paul McCartney went on his first ever solo project when the did the music score for the film. It has more of a classical than pop feel, this came at around the time The Beatles were trying more experimental music with their Revolver album. Just a great film in every way.4 points

I think the word you're looking for is rubato... /ro͞oˈbädō/ MUSIC noun the temporary disregarding of strict tempo to allow an expressive quickening or slackening, usually without altering the overall pace. adjective performed rubato. "a rubato phrase"2 points

By behind the beat I don’t mean off beat. JJG can explain it better I’m sure, but the singer is “on” beat but just a subtle tad behind. Guitar players do it too, but drummers abhor it, or so I’m told. The greatest example of this ability as a singer is a live solo performance circa ‘65 of Bob Dylan doing One Too Many Mornings. I’d add the link but there isn’t one. I have it on a bootleg album but it is not on the internet or YouTube. So Dylan is able to pat his head and rub his belly at the same time. Anyway, to bring the post back to Noir Alley, when I watched Aldo Ray in the feature film some weeks back, I said to myself, “You know, this guy acts behind the beat.”2 points

Agree on all points, and I missed the Paul McCartney association. Marjorie Rhodes is wonderful as the uber-tolerant all knowing saint of a mother. It was surprising to see Haley Mills doing the full nude scene. Good job Haley! I found her relationship with her new husband awkwardly unconvincing compared to the easy chemistry between her and her brother in law on their outings. Bennett's inability to perform based on 'thin walls' and a wedding night prank feel like flimsy excuses when, if given the chance, every guy in the neighborhood would have found a way to accomplish the task. Then the father's romantic reminiscing of honeymoon walks on the beach , not with his wife, but with his friend who had gone along with the honeymoon couple! It'd be completely unsurprising to visit the family in a few years and find both Bennet and his father divorced and living 'alternative' lifestyles.2 points

I'm enjoying this course, but I must say I'm confused by Dr. Ament's ongoing comments about actors/actresses whose voices were dubbed. She made comments about how Eleanor Powell must have had a terrible voice since she had to be dubbed for "Born to Dance." This is not true. Eleanor actually recorded with Tommy Dorsey and those recordings are on YouTube and her singing voice is perfectly fine. Likewise, this week she stated that Ava Gardner had to be "revoiced" for "Show Boat" which infers she could not sing. Again, not true. In many cases, directors (or perhaps studio execs) made the decision to dub actresses who had perfectly fine voices. Here is Ava Garner's original vocal for Show Boat. You be the judge.1 point

Not only did she have a very good voice, but her interpretation was as good as I've heard recordings of Helen Morgan who performed the role on Broadway. Plus, her entire portrayal of the role was memorable, not the least of which was her final, teary-eyed scene as the showboat steams out of the harbor. Memorable indeed.1 point
