I just watched TCM's Forbidden Hollywood Vol 1. Someone here recommended WATERLOO BRIDGE '31 and I've never seen RED HEADED WOMAN '32 either so I watched that too. Neither of these films were enjoyable for me. I wasn't impressed with Waterloo Bridge at all. The charactors were pretty stereotypical cardboard cut outs of a naive young soldier and weary street wise girl. The girl was Mae Clark whom I usually like, but there just wasn't enough story to carry the movie. Maybe the implication of her prostituting herself for survival was shocking or that a young soldier would be enthralled by her made an unusual story line in 1931, I don't know. Knowing he was off to battle was the only reason she played along with him, despite the fact she was a "hard" woman, she treated him Kindly. Then there's Harlow; a big star I never understood. She was cute -yes-but that crazy make-up only made her look like she belonged in the audience of Rocky Horror. She played a despicable charactor, one who bamboozles every decent, rich guy out there to blackmail them for money/support. She giggles her way up the man-ladder forcing these guys into "situations beyond their control". She's not cute, nor does she get her comeuppance. The scene where she traps Chester Morris in a phone booth was particularly cringe worthy. I would have shoved her aside to escape, if she got hurt it would be her own damn fault. Harlow was completely unlikeable here. The 3rd feature in the box set is BABY FACE '33 with Babs Stanwyck. That movie is a fave, it seems to get the balance of the story correct with good writing, story arc & great performances-esp Babs'.4 points

My favorite Leslie Caron performance is a non-dancing role: school teacher Catherine Freneau (Goody Two Shoes) in FATHER GOOSE. She and Cary Grant were hilarious together!4 points

Ah yes. I don't always listen to Suicidal Tendencies, but when I do, so do my neighbors.3 points

I suspect: How to Marry a Cow would be a bunch of bull. My little fuzzy has: "bovine aortic valve" to replace faulty factory part. He states that it is perfect because he is a writer and so it is a good thing to have more bull installed. It made me wonder if I married a cow. I will say to his credit that he did not immediately retort that he had also. I have to believe that that did not even come into his mind because he is not such a good actor that he could feign the look of realization that that might be a good comeback when I pressed him for a response.3 points

My favorite Leslie Caron performance: The L-Shaped Room. Leslie Caron in The L-Shaped Room, with the great Cicely Courtneidge3 points

My choice for TCM Underground: Crazy Love (1987) -- the best Belgian movie I ever saw! Based on The Copulating Mermaid of Venice, Calif. and other works by Charles Bukowski. This is a bizarre, poignant, and curiously affecting movie. And it's in Flemish! I saw it in London when it was released. I believe it did get a release in the U.S., but was considered too controversial and wasn't around for long.3 points

Big fan of Leslie Caron; A very solid combination of talent, beauty, charm and style. She has a way of pulling at my heart strings more so than any of the other actor\dancers of the golden era of musicals. Films like Lili "work" for me (without getting too sentimental), because of her charm and lightness of being.3 points

What I wondered about is if MGM had to pay the Lewis Stone's estate for the use of his image in the film Andy Hardy Comes Home. While researching this I found out how Stone died of a heart attack: (Wiki): "He reportedly suffered a heart attack while chasing away some neighborhood kids who were throwing rocks at his garage. Another published report states that on that date Stone and his third wife were watching television when they heard a racket in the back yard. When he investigated, Stone found lawn furniture once again floating in the pool and glimpsed three or perhaps four teenage boys running toward the street. Stone gave chase despite his wife's warning not to exert himself". So did Stone die chasing neighborhood Andy Hardy type kids? Oh, the irony of life. I hadn't seen Andy Hardy Comes Home (I have seen all the others in the series); Interesting that Joey Forman was in the film. I only knew him from Get Smart and his role as Harry Hoo, famous Chinese detective. I never knew Forman and Rooney had such a connection (Wiki): He first attracted attention in Las Vegas as the opening act for Mickey Rooney and also Rooney's straight man. He also co-starred in Mickey Rooney's 1954–1955 NBC sitcom The Mickey Rooney Show: Hey, Mulligan, as Mickey's best friend. Did Buck Henry and others creators of Get Smart get the idea for Harry Hoo from Rooney and Breakfast at Tiffany's.3 points

Some years ago, I attended a screening of "Marty", one of my favorite films, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California. The director of "Marty", Delbert Mann, talked about the film and answered questions from the audience. There was a scene after Marty takes Clara home, where she sits in her parents' bedroom and talks about her date with Marty and makes the decision to take the job in the private school. I stood up and asked the audience if anyone was familiar with that scene. Delbert Mann said that the scene had been cut out for broadcast TV. TCM shows "Marty" with the scene included but the Movies Network recently showed "Marty" with the scene missing!2 points

Complete version 1, complete version 2, etc. As in "DIrector's Cut" vs, Theatrical/Original release. Differing versions are 'complete'. Then you have Lost Horizon situations where portions are lost due to decay and no complete versions available. Not to be confused with edits made at some point by god knows who or why like in Three Days of the Condor and The Silencers. These superfluous cuts should be documented.2 points

For tapping on Guitar here is Stanley Jordan. My wife heard this and said this was a great duet version, not realizing that this is just one dude, with no overdubs. Using tapping Jordan plays the melody with one hand and the bass\harmonic parts with the other. I play Georgia a lot, so when I told her this is just one guy and before she could say anything, I said: and don't ask me why I don't play it like that!!!2 points

I was merely relating that Trebek was what could be considered a sort of celebrity in Canada before hosting any game shows in The United States. And some might argue that he reached some celebrity status hosting those shows as well. But then like JAMES stated, it all comes down to how one defines "celebrity". Sepiatone2 points

I agree with you here (hey, there is always a first time!); Of course a network like TCM, where their entire focus is movies, should know what version they are leasing. There is only one dependency here; do those that own a film (e.g. a studio, Disney, etc...), know what version(s), they have to lease? One would think they would; E.g. the 1931 Garbo film Mata Hari: There is the initial 1931 released, pre-code version. But the film was re-released after the Production code was enforced in July 1934 and MGM had to cut the film to get it passed by the censors. Therefore there are two "legit" studio released versions. When TCM shows a film like Mata Hari they should know which of these two they have leased!2 points

you know I try to be agreeable as I possibly can because almost no one wants to agree with me because I'm viewed as some sort of a pest and when I am right, like I am here, nobody wants to acknowledge it... so lets see if I got this right. we can't even expect tcm to know if their movie prints are whole or cut up? gimme a break. of course they should know. they're these supposed unmatched film experts who know everything like if a mouse farted underneath the movie camera during the closeup on the wicked witch of the west's shoes.2 points

Interesting video on the famed murder..... It ruined the careers of Mabel Normand and Mary Miles Minter. Why has no one made a film abut this scandal?2 points

If there's not an uncut version available, then that would mean they wouldn't show it at all. Sometimes pieces of films are just irretrievably lost (Garland's A Star Is Born is a well-known example)2 points

I THINK i was in elementary/middle school at that same (glorious) time and i cannot guess how many lunchtable/playground convos I had with someone whose older brother had seen it or shown it to them. A lot of the footage was faked though (or so I have read.)2 points

I did wonder if it should be: The Mystery of the Wax Cow, or The Cow of the Wax Museum, or The Mystery of the Cow Museum. I believe that a writer could present quite different plots for each. 20,000 Cows Under the Sea Reservoir Cows 12 Angry Cows The Usual Cows To Kill a Cow A Clockwork Cow Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Cows Dial C for Cows Arsenic and Old Cows Cows with Dirty Faces / Angels with Dirty Cows / Angels with Cow Faces The Name of the Cow2 points

When I was in college, there was a whole series of VHS releases called Faces of Death that I believe consisted entirely of people dying on camera. Maybe not traditional snuff films but in the same ballpark. Aimed for people who get their jollies by watching that stuff. I was always way too squeamish to ever rent one of them.2 points

Actions speak louder than words..... I'm sure Mayer got the point no matter how it was phrased. Haines did NOT dump Jimmie Shields. Haines did NOT marry a woman. Haines did NOT live a closeted life. Haines likely DID err in assuming some other studio would pick him up since he was still a box office star but Mayer had him blackballed so Paramount, Fox, Warners, etc wouldn't hire him. Mayer's mistake was assuming Haines would disappear, but he remained a part of the social set as a decorator to the stars, and a mainstay of the party and nightclub circuit. He also kept on attending Hollywood premieres. If I remember correctly he attended the premiere of SUNSET BOULEVARD with Joan Crawford. Mann reports that Haines overheard someone complaining that the mansions of silent stars were never that ostentatious (Norma Desmond's) and Haines shot back "Bebe Daniels, Norma Shearer and Pola Negri all had homes with ugly interiors like that...."2 points

Night of the Living Cow The Invisible Cow Island of Lost Cows The Ghost Cow The Cow from Another World Quatermass and the Cow The Masque of the Red Cow Cow from the Black Lagoon The Cow They Could Not Hang Mystery of the Wax Cow Cows are inherently evil creatures. Any person who has had to milk them will tell you of their beastly love of squashing people against walls or slapping people in the face with a dung-laden tail. It is true that cows kill more people than sharks but only because it would be very difficult for a cow to kill a shark.2 points

I'm not into this sort of thing, but occasionally someone will email me a link that goes to this video hosting site. It is mostly just stuff that YT won't host - being that they fallaciously see themselves as the self-appointed arbiters of all things "video". Sometimes you just have to go around them. And hence more edgy sites like this emerge. This one goes out of its way though... https://vidmax.com/2 points
