Well, that is a question for an entirely different thread, in my opinion.

There could be something in what you say. Something similar has also been contemplated between Glenn Ford and George MacReady in "Gilda", and I am sure there are numerous examples that others can provide.

I am not inclined to talk about it now, but may do so in the future.

  2. I watched "Rogue Cop" last night, a rare foray by MGM into the noir genre [although I'm not totally convinced of whether this film is noir or not].

I also saw Robert Taylor, in this film, give an inspired performance which I should mention in the "Cynical Characters" thread elsewhere.

I even enjoyed his performance here more than I did in "Johnny Eager" [speaking of cynical characters, Van Heflin as Jeff Hartnett, for me, is cynicism personified]. Roles that give him some backbone and grit seem to suit him better, especially as he ages and loses the soft, matinee-idol appearance to his face.

The film is also very well-written, with good performances by George Raft and Anne Francis. Crime/gangster/detectiive film enthusiasts should seek this film out, if they are not aware of it already.

  3. What can I tell you?

    It's a gift. B-)

I'm known elsewhere (cf. thread re: psychotic movie marathon) for being...shall we say...unbalanced.

["Sidewalk to Nowhere", coincidentally, was a proposed title for my upcoming memoirs, as was "Unclassified Male" and others I won't mention.]

Oh, hello there, GM...how pleasant to see you again...just passing by...

  4. Well, then, GM...

I don't know whether to thank you or come at you with my 15-inch chef's knife... ;-)

...or maybe I'll just sneak up behind you with my black gloves and my piano wire...

...or maybe I'll have a bowl of FrootLoops and a long nap...

I'm so, so tired...when will the voices ever stop??????????

["Strangers on a Train" definitely needs to be on the list - love that Robert Walker...]

  5. I totally agree re: both H-B and "Rocky and Bullwinkle" [Moose and Squirrel are available on DVD, gladly].

Just one 'r' in Hanna-Barbera, by the way.

I just went to Wikipedia to get myself a good flashback of the Hanna-Barbera lineup...and I can practice my limited voice imitation skills in the privacy of my humble abode.

  6. A small correction...you are, I think, referring to "Snagglepuss", who is known for his frequent exclamation, "Heavens to Murgatroid", and his exits to stage left or right [which I occasionally appropriate as a tribute to the HB cartoons I enjoyed as a youngster].

I am combing the recesses of my memory [if recesses can be combed, that is] for the answer to your question...it's going to cost me a mighty smack to my forehead when I hear it, though.

  7. Hello, I think I might be 'Thumper' - I can't recall why you said it to me, but no matter.

I am in agreement with the prevailing wisdom here, which is why we need "Pointless Thread" and the new and wonderful "Needs a Caption" thread on the Information, Please forum [don't worry, DavidEnglish, my rates for this shameless plug are eminently affordable i.e. zero].

This is also the reason why the "Superman Returns" thread is not on my list of frequently viewed threads - too much bile and ill humour for my liking. That does not preclude my defence of their right to put forward their views, however. I leave aside the question of whether the debate is healthy or not.

  8. Hey, clamster, this is a fantastic idea!

...and a good way to get your friends juiced up is by a little bit of creepiness...you'll have to judge for yourself how little/much they can take...

    Here are my suggestions:

Cape Fear [1961] with Mitchum as Max Cady

Diabolique [if you want a little foreign flavour]

    The Hitch-hiker

    Leave Her to Heaven

    The Most Dangerous Game

    Peeping Tom

Play Misty for Me [a bit too contemporary, possibly, but might fit your needs]

    White Heat

The Sea Wolf [1941] with Edward G. Robinson as Wolf Larsen

I could go on, but I didn't want to get too obscure or delve into anything too cheesy...

The selections you have been given to date, as well as your own [The Bad Seed is an exemplary choice on your part, and could be the centrepiece for your marathon], are all good.

I'll look forward to you reporting back to us on how they enjoyed some of these, and which ones didn't register. It'll give us seasoned individuals a sense of what creepiness crosses generational lines.

  9. Dennis Price in softcore porn???

I just watched him over the weekend in "Tunes of Glory", where he gave a very measured and distinguished performance in a difficult role, holding his own with Alec Guinness and John Mills.

Gracious me, there must be some kind of story behind that fall from grace...

  10. I'm usually not too good at this, but the end of the movie is one that stuck with me until even now.

The film is "The Bad Seed", with the creepy and precocious Patty McCormack as the little girl in question.

You can view the trailer for the film on the Movie Database above, and give yourself a flashback.

  11. And now, miserable Earth-dwellers, for my final display of Andromedan superiority...

I will switch all your primitive radio frequencies to broadcast recordings of Andromedan folk music...by a singer known to you Earthers as........... "SLIM WHITMAN"!!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
