This is what I said, and meant.

VOICE FROM OFFSTAGE: "Hey, don't bogart that joint! Keep passing it around..."

    Rename the thread - I don't care.

    Let's have fun now.

    Everyone, into the pool!

  2. I am perfectly happy with leaving the list untouched and letting either Jump Raven or our festival's prospective host deal with it, in the spirit of free speech.

I am not some egghead fascist who needs to micro-manage [i almost wrote 'mangle'] things for my or anyone's benefit.

Let's feed the beast, and figure out our next move once this thread has run its course.

  3. My question is, then:

Are we making a list of junk for the sake of making a list or do we want to do something with it?

If it's just for our own amusement, fine - forget everything I said.

If not, then let's start thinking about what we want to do with it.

  4. I have to agree with you, allie.

I'm not sure how to explain to RockyRoad that there is an essential difference in my mind between:

    1. "Who's That Girl?" and

    2. "Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla".

Yes, in the general sense, both are bad movies.

For me, the first one has no redeeming qualities and is not even a source of amusement.

The second one will at least provide me with some amusement because of its deficiencies.

I will grant you that someone may see things in the opposite fashion, so...in the spirit of compromise...

I would propose that we divide the list into two parts: [maybe someone can devise appropriate titles for the lists]:

    Category A: Neo-Crap [films post-1965]

Category B: Vintage Crap [films pre-1965]

I can be flexible on the cut-off date but neo-crap like "The Garbage Pail Kids" is not the same as a classic like "The Brain That Wouldn't Die".

I am not passing judgement on either film's crap quotient; they are two different species of the same animal.

    Food for thought...

  5. It's hard to say when shorts like this will play - the TCM schedule does not indicate when short films are aired.

You are in luck, though. I happened to have been taping this time period [to see "Born to Kill", among other films] and here is the info' I was able to get:

title: "The Pajama Party" (1931) [the date was hard to read]

    director & producer: Hal Roach

actors: Zazu Pitts, Thelma Todd, Elizabeth Forrester, Eddie Dunn, Donald Novis

I hope I have been of some help.

  6. I just assumed it was, Larry.

I thought the "G. Smiley" in the original post referred to George Smiley in the John LeCarre novel , "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold". [is that character based on a real person? I'm not a reader of novels.]

    I could be mistaken.

  7. We can discuss 'remakes' [even if it would be an improvement] in the appropriate thread.

I am just pleased to see that the original is on the Bad Movies list.

[note to patful: "Oops" is not slang; it is colloquial English speech. Slang refers usually to a group of terms/expressions used by a particular group of people (e.g. thieves' slang), and is usually not appropriate for use in formal occasions]

  8. Welcome from me, on behalf of the Canadians on this message board.

Your favourites list is very wide-ranging, and should help you get involved in many of our threads and forums.

Enjoy. Browse at your leisure. We are quite sociable.

  9. > TOONMANY YOU HAVE BETTER WATCH HOW YOU TALK TO ME

    > BECAUSE IF YOU DONT IM GOING TO REPORT YOU

    > !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, for my responses to your question:

    1. I don't understand the above quote or where it came from or the reference to the 'straight jacket', so I have no comment.

    2. No more OS_____S! [and I mean, those people]

    3. "The Shanghai Gesture" can be discussed at the appropriate thread.

    4. Misspelling is misspelling, regardless of who/what/when/where/why...in films, in forums, on threads, wherever...let's move on.

    5. RE: Unintentional examples of misspeaking in films - not so interested.

I'm going to have a late-night snack - back in a little while...

  10. Agreed.

The less said about those people, the better.

    ;-)

Great day in the morning! My first successful emoticon...

  11. > the penmenship> award, that is!

You must have "crossed your i's" when you wrote this...

Thanks for playing our game...we have some lovely parting gifts for you...maybe a crack on the knuckles from Sister Ellen Marie, right, TMN?

Seriously, though, I don't think the language police belong here. Let's just get our thoughts across coherently and, as long as we don't start text messaging, we'll all get along fine.

  12. Nice handle there, Sam.

I totally agree - after watching "Shaft" [a realistic candidate for 'most overrated film'], I found "Superfly" down-to-earth and refreshingly gritty.

It's unfortunate that Ron O'Neal didn't find a place in mainstream moviemaking.

The soundtrack was maybe a touch dated, but not annoyingly so.

I wonder who got to be the "bubble wrangler" during that bathtub scene...whoever it was must have had quite a time.

  13. [furrows brow]

I thought commercial advertising/product placement wouldn't be allowed here...this could be the thin edge of the wedge...to arms, to arms!

    [picks up stray cudgel]

"We must fight them in the threads; we must fight them in the forums...we shall never surrender!"

...or are we talking about a character from some Marx Brothers [or Mel Brooks] movie lost in the vaults?

If this is a blatant attempt to inject advertising into our hallowed halls, it will be something up with which I will not put!!!

[picks up thesaurus, and goes home...]

  14. The shoes I recall seeing him wear in one clip had a one-inch [or so] heel on them - they might've had lifts in them as well [it wouldn't surprise me if that were true]...

He was striding across the stage, singing "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy..." and you can clearly see them as he stops at one side of the stage...

    Anyway, just idle curiosity...

  15. A dancing-related question that has been in the back of my mind...I'm sure someone could answer it.

I've seen clips of Cagney dancing in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" - is he wearing women's shoes [nothing wrong with it - just struck me as curious]? If so, why?

Small feet? Matched the outfit? Standard practice?

  16. No hard feelings, Matt.

Thanks for your wisdom and insight.

I watched them in the 60's [i wouldn't have cared if they were repeats or not]. Those shows, and "Rocky and Bullwinkle", were oases in a cartoon wasteland.

    'Nuff said.
