  1. Hey Kyle (and others in So. Cal.) - Are you familiar with Eddie Brandt's in North Hollywood? When I lived in the Valley, they were my lifeline for classic films along with Video West in We Ho and Studio City.

Your suggestion about getting Windemere from the library/video store (and bursting the bubble of my perfectly good rationalization as to why I absolutely had no choice but to own it, no matter the cost) reminded me of these two excellent locations which I still miss very much.

  2. Arrrgh - what a disappointment. I was really looking forward to finally seeing this as I've heard excellent feedback about it. Looks like I'll need to spring the 80 bucks for the boxed set DVD to finally satisfy my curiosity. I was really hoping to get by without doing so.

As always, thanks for the info Kyle.

  3. I received a TCM reminder email yesterday letting me know that Lady Windemere's Fan is playing on 9/8 at 3:15AM (calender date 9/9), but when I check the schedule here online it says Never On Sunday is playing at that time.

Does anyone know how I might either A) find out if Lady Windemere is actually the correct movie playing at that time or B) find out when it might be re-scheduled for?

A site-search of the future schedule does NOT show Lady Windemere as upcoming at all.

    An info is appreciated.

  4. Indeed - who can forget Marie Osmond's star-making turn in Klute, where she proved she had real acting chops and wasn't just a sexy body as it appeared when sweet little Miss Osmond appeared in Barbarella. And then when Marie so totally BECAME Lillian Hellman in Julia. Wow! And of course she's so moving in Coming Home as well. And then to show such versatility by doing truly funny comedies like Fun With Dick and Jane, Nine to Five, and, um,Goin' Cocoanuts and then a two-part turn on The Love Boat...

  5. Phishy indeed. I followed the link in the message and eventually got to the poster's blog. He's a college kid - his profile is thus:

    Morgan Wick

    Age: 19

    Gender: Male

    Astrological Sign: Taurus

    Zodiac Year: Dragon

Location: Seattle : WA : United States

    About Me

A college student with a big brain, a lack of social skills, and a hot temper.

At best he's a well-intentioned college kid who thinks he's on to a good idea for a book proposal, otherwise he just seems to be attracting folks to his blogsite.

  6. Suzan Ball was so beautiful, and sadly died from cancer at 22 before having an opportunity to achieve much success.

Dorothy Dell had a potentially career-making part with Shirley Temple in Little Miss Marker, but was killed in a car accident at 19.

Paramount's Helen Burgess had the second female lead in The Plainsman with Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur, but succumbed to pneumonia only 6 months after that film's release.

After some dreck, Dorothy Stratten was on the verge with They All Laughed and her connection to Peter Bogdonavich before her tragic murder at age 20.

Sharon Tate was so beautiful and would likely have continued to work in some capacity through the '70s despite some real lackluster and flop films.

Barbara "Too Beautiful" Lamarr was a bonafied star at the time of her death. Hard to predict if she would have carried over into the "talkie" era. She burned out at 29.

Thelma Todd was so beautiful and so funny. I think she would be much better remembered today if her career had a chance to flourish.

Carole Landis had already waned in popularity at the time of her suicide at 31, but it's still sad to know that her life ended so unhappily at such a young age.

Susan Peters' paralysis at age 24 and death at 31 certainly cut short a very promising career for a very beautiful performer.

Lyda Roberti, more popular on stage and radio but making some headway in the movies, died from a heart attack far too young at only 31 years old.

At the risk of running on, I'll also give brief mention to the following actresses who all, sadly, died far too young:

    Alma Rubens (33)

Maria Montez (34 or 39 - depending on which source you use)

Renee Adoree (35) - so good in The Big Parade

    lovely Lilyan Tashman (34)

    Mabel Normand (34)

    Mexican Spitfire Lupe Veles (36)

Gail Russell (36) I LOVE her in The Uninvited!

Marie Prevost (38) Sadly most remembered today for that horrible story about her dog eating her.

    stunning Pier Angeli (39)

  7. > And then there were Cinemascope movies that got shown

    > not in pan-and-scan, but simply stretched to fit the

    > screen, turning everybody into Olive Oyls.

Worse yet, I recall seeing the Cinemascope film Woman's World on network TV several years back in which neither stretching or panning & scanning were done. There was a scene in a car in which Fred MacMurray was supposedly driving on the right hand side, and Lauren Bacall was supposedly the passenger on the left side, but you couldn't see either of them - only the road passing in the background because the TV editor just focused on the center image. You could hear their voices, but they weren't there.

Give me the correct aspect ration on my TV any day!

  8. > I also felt old at the Fair on Friday night. My wife

    > and I saw the Chevy Court concert with Firefall, Pure

    > Prairie League and Poco. There's something about

    > seeing wrinkled, white-haired musicians up there

    > playing rock guitars and drums....to say nothing of

    > the sea of white, gray and bald heads in the

    > audience, groovin' to the music...

And I can only imagine what Mrs. Frake would have to put into her mincemeat today to take top prize from the judges!
